Batch 3 from Aug 2012.

A: Hazy, light straw, HUGE white head, good retention, amazing lace.

S: Very Belgian aroma: Horse blanket, corriander and tropical fruit; citrus rind, lemon grass.

T: Definitely some leathery funk, but it's not as pronounced as the aroma. Tons of vanilla in the flavour, wheaty biscuit, tropical fruit, slight pepper, hints of corriander, yeast sediment has a healthy, doughy flavour. Good bitterness, alcohol is really subtle.

M: Highly attenuated, moderate body is really carbonated, with a crisp, dry finish.

O: A gold standard for this new style?

Bottle: Poured a hazy white/yellow color ale with a super large pale white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of dry hoppy notes with some strong Brett notes also dominating. Taste is a mix between some solid wheat alt notes with some strong fruity and dry hops notes with a finish dominated by the funky Brett notes. Body is full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Really well put together with huge amount of complexity while retaining a great level of drinkability.

The beer pours a pale golden yellow with an extremely large craggy white head that refuses to die down leaving thick gobs of foamy rings. Smells enjoyably of musty yeast, apple, pear and coriander.

The hops provide a spicy flavor that is less prominent than in the nose. With the coriander prominent in the finish. The yeast that has a musty barnyard character comes and goes prevalent midway through tasting and again on the finish. There is a consistent fruity flavor throughout of crisp apples and pear. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium, but very lively due to the great amount of carbonation.

A very unique beer. It is difficult to say what the aging in oak wine tanks has done, but there is a greater complexity present that I have difficult picking out the individual favors that may be due to the aging. Very enjoyable.

Corked bottle ordered through letspour...poured in Corsendonk chalice glass.
Even before opening, you can see this is a hazy, hefeweizen, modestly or unfiltered beer.
Nice pop of cork...pours a cloudy yellow gold, white gold...Belgian wit color.
Big head of clouds hangs quite a bit.
Aroma is big...tangerine, clove, rosemary, cardamon, black pepper, kumquat, vibrant hops, citrus, citrus hops, mango, orange.
Big carbonation and spicy mouthfeel.
Flavors of funky, bitter hops and malt. Whoa...I'd better give this 5 minutes...
OK...it's opened up and that helps...cantalope and hop aroma, nice head remains, cloudy but not noticeable particulates...yet! Rich, bold flavors...somewhat of an assault on the tongue and mouth but not a complete palate wrecker, so to speak! There's some cream of tartar, a slight chalk dryness, some melon rind juice, subtle sweetness, herbs, yeast...strange strong abv saison qualities. The French oak leaves a big imprint, or, masks some inherent flavors. This is an example where I wonder if oak helps a good beer. Then again, the Brett also adds complexity, and I'm not sure it helps. I guess it's what you're hoping for, and I should therefore be open minded to what's offered, but it's bitter, dry, funky and, for me, significantly difficult.
Funny thing...I only just looked at the side label that mentioned kumquats and peppercorns. I sometimes mention these as flavors in beers that don't actually contain them, but this time it does...that explains quit a bit...gosh darn kumquats. OK...that said, I'm half way through, solo on this bottle, and will give it another five minutes....
Yep...brought a taste to a distinguished beer taster and she said bitter and gave me the puckering "uh what's this" expression. Not pretty. Still, I appreciate this...am amazed I guessed kumquats, find it bold and tasty, especially after some opening up, but unnecessarily complex, busy, bitter, and weird.

28-Jan-2013 review from 750 mL bottle poured into chouffe tulip. Batch 3 Aug/2012 (it takes a bit for beer to get to Canada).

Ar: citrus peel, more wit-like than the rest of the beer, floral and fruity, peach, great fruitiness, spicy brett

Ap: Massive white head, great retention, clear golden straw. Chunky lace

T: Strong resinous hops, tropical fruit, mild peach/apricot, sulfury hints, aggressive hop presence, good fruitiness, the galaxy, yeast and fruit work well together, assertive bitterness, lingering resin, not as much brett as in aroma

M: light body, high carbonation, resinous bitterness

O: A bit too bitter/resinous, good fruit character overall. May have been better a couple months ago but still solid. Not especially wit-like but good

Smell: Yeast. Floral.

Taste: more wheat beer than IPA. Taste is good, but an IPA?

Mouthfeel: lots of carbonation for a bottle aged beer. Quite thin on the palate.

Overall: a tasty beer. A Belgian style wheat beer. Not so much of an IPA.

I had this bottle with tenderbranson69 at Holy Hound in York, shared from the corked and caged 750 into a tulip.

The color is hazed pale with overflowing white head that settles to a tight bead. The smell is herbal with wild yeast aroma and fruit with both tropical and citrus notes. The feel is brett laden with pithy kumquat tinged and rind spice with pepper in the hops and very dry carbonated finish.

The taste is tangy and fruity as the aroma indicated with kumquat quality standing out with sweet and bitter citrus with peppery element from the hops and mild yeast with wheat sweetness and grapefruity bitterness with acidic finish. Overall a top notch drinkability for the style with very good blend of flavors

look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.75

Appearance: Very hazy yellow with a fluffy/rocky white head. Superb lacing and moderate retention.

Smell: Sweet citrus and kumquat (really came through) and maybe a little tropical from the hops, as well as peppery yeast spice notes and some esters. There is also a solid brett presence, some nice earthy, barnyard tones to it.

Taste: Similar to the aroma, nice bitterness up front with a big carbonation bite and some nice citrusy hop character and yeast spice to follow. The wheat give a nice refreshing tartness and plays incredibly well into the yeast/brett character. The brett presence is not a front runner in the flavor, but is very noticeable still. The earthy tones play wonders with the hops, beautiful use of all parts of the brewing process. The mouthfeel is thin but high in carbonation and very dry, makes for an insanely drinkable brew.

Overall: Complex and very unique in terms of flavor profile. I absolutely loved this beer, although I am quite the lover of all things hoppy and all things brett. There are many different parts of the brewing process that played major roles in the final product, frequently this would lead to a beer with muddled flavors, but not this one, incredible balance. Can't wait till my next trip to alaska, great fishing and now great belgian-style ales!

750mL bottle into tulip. batch #2 APR 2012.

A: very pale straw yellow body. bright white head. lace everywhere. great retention. carbonization racing to the surface. perfect.

S: straight funk on the nose. barny and bretty goodness. bright. wild flower honey. the hops try and make their presence known, but struggle to behind the barny Brett.

T: the Brett flavor is strong. tart and refreshing. there is a linger of citrus flavor, lemons and limes, helps to remind me this is an IPA as well as a funky brew. finish of mild grain chewiness is dried out by acidity.

M: champagne-like in its carbonation. medium bodied.

D: very tasty stuff. glad the Brett characteristics are as prevalent as I was hoping they would be. also, I would like to say this is one of the most appealing looking BIPA's I have seen ever. kudos to Anchorage for doing a stellar job with the bottle conditioning here.

Appearance: pours a bright hazy golden yellow color with a big two inch head.

Smell: loads of coriander, cracked pepper, and some oak comes through to the nose.

Taste: coriander, orange, lemon zest, pepper, oak, and Brett make up the most of the flavor profile. Bitterness is moderate and alcohol is slightly noticeable.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Very crisp throughout with some moderate refreshing qualities. Long lasting aftertaste.

Overall: slow sipping beer and a bit too crisp here. Well balanced flavors and the oak and Brett make this very interesting.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter, the beer was a straw yellow color with a generous white head. A high level of carbonation made this one want to jump out of the bottle. I will forgive the minor inconvenience. The aroma was very discreet with floral notes and some Belgian accents. In the initial taste, I thought I was drinking soapy water. The citrus notes that come with the Brett combine with the floral notes to make me wonder if the glass was properly cleaned. The backbone of hops is mild, even for a Belgian IPA. The mouthfeel was aggressively bubbly, like drinking a warm can of Sprite. The carbonation mercifully subtracted the soapy taste from my mouth. I can not endorse this beer.

Pours a straw almost white yellow color with a big three finger head despite a pretty easy pour. Thre are big lines of lace all over the glass. The aroma is of breadiness, lemon zest and floral and earthy hops. The aroma is deep and full. The taste is unique. There is a lemonzest and corriander taste up front along with brett. The middle waters out a little and you get belgian yeast and some funk. The back end is all hops, it is a floral earthy hop at the back end. Not overly bitter but it balances out very well. The mouthfeel is very carbonated, in fact when I uncorked the bottle i almost killed three people. Mouthfeel is stingy and bubbly. Overall it is a decent belgian ipa, it starts out strong but starts to fizzle a little at the end.

Poured from a 650 ml bottle into a Duvel sn-ulip.

A: Very light, cloudy, hay color. Pours a giant, bubbly, dry, white, head. Disintegrates, quickly and unevenly, leaving dry white foam, and giant craters. Eventually settles to a pretty standard quarter finger, light foam blanket. Some decent foamy beer ring lacing remains as you consume. Head renews fully with each pourl

S: Bready, lemon citrus, coriander, a little honey, and some strong floral components. Maybe a little basil and oregano in there, too.

T: Lightly bitter, lightly sweet. Hay, freshly cut grass, with a little pine, and a touch of Italian spice.

M: Light an crisp, with a subtly bitter finish. Steely or coppery aftertaste.

D: The character dictates a slow and savory experience.

Atmosphere is pretty impressive. Interesting hue, great primary head which settles to a nice secondary head. Pretty solid lacing, too. Nose is a sourdough bready tone, with plenty spice, floral, and some sweet components. Very well-balanced. Flavor is a buttery feeling combination of fresh flora, with pine and savory spice. Not too bitter, not too sweet...subtle all the way around, except for the steely, biting finish. Overall, this is a really good quaff.

As soon as i cracked the cage on top of the cork the cork blew straight off without even touching it and pours a hazy light yellow hue basically looks like urine and has a fluffy three finger rising head and similar lacing, the smell is flowers in bloom, oranges, herbacous hops and lavender, the mouthfeel is light bodied yet creamy and has tastes of kumquats, citrus, corriander, the slightest touch of spice and funk, pineapple and finished with a light zesty herbal hoppy bitterness and overall i like it and its definately something id buy again just like the rest of their range you have to try it.

super citrusy aroma with hints of lemon, orange, and piney evergreen maybe even vanilla as I go back again.
color is of a cowboy yellow with a very thick head that sticks around for quit some time. the bubbles are smaller and tight but look more effervescent.
Taste is a bit bitter at first but that doesn't follow through all the way to the finish. midway your hit with a almost orange flavor giving way to a semi-dry finish.
the carbonation is a bit bitting witch make it a bit hard to quaff but needless to say it's really enjoyable.

Batch #3, August 2012 (nice to see this all the way from Alaska, welcome to Maine):

In my chalice:

A: golden hazy yellow body leaving a super big head for a Belgian IPA (about three fingers), some really nice looking foamy lacing appears

S: Galaxy hops up front and the Brett comes out appropriately with the grapefruit and peppercorn

T: Brett with hints of lemon, the grapefruit coming back

M: I can tell it was aged in wine tanks, because there is a great quality of wine-likeness to it. Harshness all around, perhaps one of the most harsh beers I've ever had, but I know, its part of the style, so I'll just keep going since there are people out there that love this stuff. Drinkable, perhaps to some, but to me, uh . . . not really.

O: this is superior for its style but since I'm still not much of a fan of the lighter Belgian styles, just ok to me. I'll keep looking for lighter Belgians to try and maybe I'll find my niche in one of these things some day.

Batch #2 April/2012

P: Once I pulled the cage off the cork I turned to put it on the counter and I heard a loud shot. The cork exploded off hitting me in the back of the neck and I quickly put my mouth over the top till it subsided. Once poured the mountainous rocky white meringue head perched upon a vivacious sea of hazy pale gold. Retention is outrageous and leaves thick sticky bubbles clinging for dear life.

S: Nose is brett heavy with tart lemon drop candy. Coriander, honey, ruby red grapefruit, fruit wax, grains, black pepper corns and dusty oak.

T/M: Brett funk and Belgian powdery yeast. Timid bitter notes of lemon zest, grapefruit, kiwi, and lime. Bartlett pears sprinkled with crushed peppercorns and rustic oak lacing. Wheat and dirty grains come through after the swallow. Mouthfeel is similar to a sparkling wine that encourages rowdy explosive carbonation and finishes dry and slightly chalky. Lingering and assertive ground pepper corns and a touch of orange oil.

O: Whats not to love when you have brett and the zing of galaxy hops. This white IPA is out of this world and delivers its name claim. Super complex yet well blended. Nothing over dominates but all layers work together in one harmonious universe of flavor.

750ml caged and corked, silk-screened (very Stone-esque) bottle, Batch #2, April 2012. Today is the day, every year since I started doing this, that I mark America's Repeal Day, by busting out the biggest, baddest, or weirdest Yankee-made brew that I've obtained over the past year. And, for some reason I think this qualifies - though I'll have to stuff the 'south of the 49th parallel' references this time. Oh well - to the drink!

This beer pours a very, very, very pale (quite justifying the 'white' in the descriptor) cloudy yellow straw colour, with four fingers of roiling, aggressively foamy, thin white head, which leaves some streaky clouds of fuzzy lace around the glass as it slowly recedes. Looks exactly like recently inoculated white wine must.

It smells of mildly funky Belgian yeast, tart, acidic citrus pith, earthy coriander, fleshy tropical fruit, softly tannic barrel wood, and thin, sharp white wine. The taste is edgy pale grain, a hay-like funkiness, softly sweet musty fruit, fermenting white grape on lees, sour lemon peel, a further bitter grassy hoppiness, and some loitering astringent wood notes. The 7% ABV is not at all noticeable, so bully for that.

The bubbles are tiny, and damned-near weaponized - they have obviously attained a huge case of pent-up, hostile cabin fever in their time since bottling - it was actually hard to get the first few sips down. After acclimatization and/or burn off, the body seems to be a rather slim, barely smooth light weight, with that carbonic frothiness just a tad too distracting. It finishes pretty dry, the yeast, grain, hops, and wood tugging mightily in that direction.

One complex beast of a Belgian-style IPA, with the overall effect well-skewed to the former - the fruit, yeast, and funk generally subsuming the hops in their tidy little cabal. Maybe it's the Galaxy hops, which I have yet to find worthy of providing a big IPA experience, but here, they're probably an unfair patsy, as there is just so much else going on, in a crazily, somehow balanced manner. A rather enjoyable tipple, and worthy of its entry into my little Boardwalk Empire-enhanced Volstead Act flight of fancy.

Poured a cloudy, pale yellow with three fingers of bright white head. Smell is extremely intense and fresh with lots of galaxy hops, melon, and citrus.

Highish carbonation and a light, crisp mouthfeel. Blast of tropical fruit and melon up front with light floral notes and smooth wheat. Trace of oaky vanilla mixed with pepper, a tiny hint of funk, and a dry finish.

One of the best beers I've had. Extremely complex and delicious. Looking forward to trying their Love Buzz Saison soon.

Poured from bottle into crooked stave snifter/tulip. Pours a golden hay - very clear (the first pour, but the second and third got more cloudy each time). Also, I purposely tried not to disturb the yeast as I added the yeast to my fermenter for a black IPA.

Great crisp malty funk and of hops. Really funky...love it.
Taste is nice mellow hopped crisp malt, grassy, slightly bitter vine, peppercorn anf slight oaky-ness.
Perfectly bitter but crisp. Very well balanced, not over soured.
Really nice brew. Just the right amount of funk, but could really use a bit more hops.

Killer beer. A friend of mine tried it when it was fresh, and said it was an average IPA with some off flavors. I had a bottle last night that was bottled in January 2012, and it was amazing. Definitely let this beer age in the bottle for at least 6 months. The brett does it's thing, and the beer has amazing lemon and sour notes, but the galaxy still comes through. An effervescent and enjoyable beer...

From notes. Batch 1.

A: Pours a hazy yellow body with large off-white head that collapses in sections and leaves lace.

S: As with the tripel I just reviewed from Anchorage, there is a signature brett aroma of lemon zest and a touch of hay-like funk. Mild earth. I really liked Bitter Monk, so I was hoping this would be an equally compelling IPA, but it is pretty lacking; it actually reminds me more of a saison minus phenols.

T: Lemon, earth, and grass. The beer finishes dry with a slight band-aid aftertaste.

O: I wrote in my notes: "not fresh?" I couldn't figure out when it was bottled at the time of my note-taking, but I was informed later that it was over 3 months old at that point. Still, having purchased it from a refrigerated store and also having spent about $15 on it, I had a reasonable expectation that this would be better than it was.

750ml bottle into a tall tulip

A: Woah, the cork literally hit the ceiling as soon as I undid the cage. I swear, this cork would have gone 20 feet in the air if it wasn't for the ceiling. It ended up five feet away from me, the cork five feet in a different way. However, I somehow didn't get get any gushing. The beer ends up a clear golden color with extremely active carbonation and over four fingers of head even with a careful pour. Very nice looking, but the coronation is extreme.

S: The aroma starts of with stone fruit and must - the Brett is very apparent here. I also get a nice fruity hop profile that goes very well with the Brett. The two go extremely well together. I also get a nice spiciness - very peppery with a hint some citrus, ginger, and a hint of clove. Reminiscent of a hoppy Saison with the fruit, hops, and yeast perfectly matching. White wine only adds to the complexity here, giving the beer even more fruitiness.Nearly perfect.

T: Not nearly as intense and complex as the aroma, but still nice. A bitter hoppiness starts of with citrus and must. It's almost hard to tell what's coming from the Brett and what is coming from the yeast - they match up very well together.white wine grapiness comes in afterwards and adds just a hint of sweetness, but certainly does not overpower.

M: On the thin side with extremely high carbonation.

O: The aroma on this is amazing. Stone fruits, barnyard, white wine, perfectly balanced and integrated. The flavor is similar and very nice, but cannot live up to the aroma here. I could use a bit more fruit in the flavor. The carbonation is also a bit intense - the cork and cage ending up on opposite sides of the room and all. I'm just surprised my ceiling doesn't have an indentation. I seriously looked to make sure.
