Stopped by with the wife for a couple of beers and a bit of time away from the kids.
The Urban Chestnut Brewing Company is on Washington right off of the St. Louis University campus. It occupies a space that was an old service station many years ago. The bar has the feel of a loft space with exposed brick and wooden rafters. We felt right at home and comfortable immediately.
Drinks are ordered at the bar. Service is fast and friendly. The blackboard above the bar listed at least a dozen of the UCBC beers (no guest beers) while also showing each of the beer's ABV, IBU and Session information. Free tasting samples are given and
The food is mostly snacks along with meat and cheese platters which were very good.
We will definitely be returning to Urban Chestnut. Their future looks very bright.

The wife and I stopped at Urban Chestnut on a quiet Wednesday afternoon at a lunch time, bleary-eyed from a flight and lack of sleep. The place was dead, except for two guys who seemed to work at the brewery and a Korean-War veteran drinking a couple of pilsners. The taproom is, by any standards, very spacious: a long L-shaped bar and dozens of tables, plus ample windows and lots of sunlight. I could hang out here all day!
They let me try a bunch of their house brews (they also offer Schlafly on tap) and I settled for their STLIPA, a Double IPA. I can see how their offerings are unique, but I was no fan of all those odd brews like Black Pumpkin Ale, Imperial Nut and Chestnut.
We had a light lunch there consisting of delicious cheese curds served straight up on a plastic bag and a pretty good local brat with mustard. This is super simple food, but it goes oh-so-well with beer.
I would come back to Urban Chestnut for the atmosphere and eats, but the beer didn’t cut it for me. A great local hangout nonetheless.

This is a place I wish I'd have stopped by during some warmer months. I was able to catch a glimpse of the beer garden, which was closed because it's now a chilly fall Tuesday evening, but it looked outstanding and I can imagine some good times being had out there. There weren't many people in but again it was a Tuesday night. Otherwise, a very nice setup with wood tables, a decent amount of space.
I only had the chance to try two beers while I was there. Both were good but did not blow me away. The STL locals rant and rave about the beer here so I'll be back to give some more a shot.
The bartenders were friendly, graciously poured samples, offered their knowledge, and genuiinly seemed engaged in the beers and customers.
They had a nice selection of old european styles and modern american styles.
Good prices, speaking strictly of the beer. I didn't have a chance to eat any food.
I'll definitely be back to try some more. I hear a lot of good things about this place and while I wasn't personally blown away I can see the potential and maybe just selected the wrong two beers to try.

This place was a nice surprise near, but slightly off the beaten path, from St Louis University. It has the great atmosphere that one would expect at a micro-brewery, namely a large Spartan brick walled room with wooden beams in the ceiling, exposed ventilation pipes, drop ceiling lights, large wooden tables, etc. It also has a nice outside beer garden. The beer selection was limited with 8 on tap, although the quality of the 3 I had were very good. They also encourage trying a sample first before ordering. Bartenders were friendly and generally very helpful. The food was very limited and not intended as a meal, but rather as an appetizer. The sausage platter I had was tasty and went well with the double IPA I was drinking. All in all a nice experience.
