Served as part of a barrel tasting, the beer is served in a stemmed schooner. Pours a rich, muddled brown coloring that is almost black, with a thing ring of beige filmy head around the surface. Slick, oily cling along the glass. Nose is smokey, with rich mocha blends throughout. Smells good. Flavors are quick to the middle tongue, with a smokey and meaty character initially, and some chocolate and charcoal highlights. The body is thin and slightly dry, and you get some woody and earthy undertones from the barreling. The aftertaste is rich and smokey, leading to a slightly lingering finish. Good, solid brew.

32oz growler courtesy of my sister. Poured into a Buzzards Bay gold rimmed stemmed glass. As I understand it, this is the first beer Throwback put into a barrel.
A - Pours a deep, dark, opaque black color. Two fingers of thick and frothy foam with a creamy tan color sits on top for a minute or two showing very good retention. When the head falls lots of foamy lace is left on the glass.
S - Lots of roast aromas - dark roasted malt and some coffee...lots of milk chocolate, some licorice and a bit of a cool/herbal flavor mixed in too.
T - Roasty malt, peaty, smokey, a touch of astringency, milk chocolately and a bit woody.
M - Light tartness, medium bodied, woody, smokey with medium carbonation.
O - Good stout...the barrel aging, hmmm...was under the impression that it was a bourbon barrel that was used, but nobody in the tasting group picked up any hint of bourbon. We did get other characteristics that say it could have been in a previously unused barrel - woody, tannic and tart flavors among these. Regardless this was good overall...definitely wouldn't mind having this again.
