Fresh purple raisins soaked in white grape juice. The beer pours a nice deep garnet/brown with a slightly cloudy haze (swirl the last two ounces and pour into the glass to accentuate the yeast character). The beer is a lean easy drinker with a great saison-like lemon and ester character that is amped up by a healthy dose of dark fruit notes from either special-b malt or dark candi sugar. Really enjoying this one. I tend to think of it as a fall version of a saison.

This was poured into a chalice. The appearance was centered around a decent hazy golden yellow to somewhat orange/light brown color. There was a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute and left some light lacing sticking nicely around the sides of the glass. The smell had some nice light Belgian spices up front and let in a slight sour lemon. The taste took the lemon and the Belgian spices to town and let in a decent citrus flavoring. It left a really dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. The carbonation was sharp but nothing overbearing. Overall, I say this was a pretty good Belgian pale ale worthy of having again.

Dark brown color with a little bit of a red tint. Dark fruity flavors in the smell and taste. Medium bodied but overall pretty good. Middle of the road type of beer, good but nothing spectacular.

My big problem with Vivant is they no longer distribute to Illinois and I make it too rarely to Michigan these recent years. Nonetheless, there is much to like about Vivant: their community feel, their sustainability ethic, their Walloonian ethos.
As for Solitude, I'm glad I got to try it. Its foam sticks around and, generally, is inviting. It Smells mostly of malt and lemon with spices in the back of my nose Tastes follow closely but the lemon is stronger but gives way to a dry finish. Medium to light in my mouth. Decent pairing with a winter soup.
