At the Reno Blues n Brews event, 2012, this was one of the few selections that actually made it worth coming out. Owner/brewer/employee. . . someone brought a growler of this and was giving out pours. Looks real nice, its jet black, thick consistency without going over the top into sludge territory, creamy beige head about 1" on the top of it. Big roasted aroma, chocolate malt, minimal hopping.
Taste, substantial and smooth, makes me wonder if there was oats used in this. The big roast job contributes what I suspect to be a mild bitterness that isn't hop derived. Its something I haven't been accustomed to when drinking at High Sierra thus far: big, robust flavors! The alcohol thankfully was well hidden in this one. Doesn't have the sweet dark fruit figgy thing going of a russian imperial stout, this one is american, big roast, big thickness, nutty.
Easily the best beer High Sierra makes, and one of, if not the best beer at the entire fest.
