I think this is an excellent beer. For a double it has a light body and a good hoppy Cascade, Centennal, Chinook and Columbus flavor. Some doubles are too sweet or thick in body. I can think of another brewery in Buellton who's IPA is the best out there; but their double is thick and sweet in the bottle. This is not the case with Double Deck. It reminds me ofm SteelHead Double IPA from Blue Lake near Eureka California.

Hoppy-sweet on the palate, Figueroa Mountain's big-boy IPA boasts a hearty malt body and a wrap of hoppy goodness to soak it all in.

It starts out honey-amber, slightly hazed and with a medium frothy cap to lead the charge. Though its crown soon colapses back into the glass, it manages to lace with a broken ring here and there.

And its honey appearances lean into aroma and taste as well. Its sweet caramelly upstart reigns in hop elements of citrus, tropical fruit, and tea-like herbs to add depth of flavor and aromas midway through the session. But a close of both sharp and citrusy bitterness fuses with more stemmy and broad bitterness making me think the beer is of both American and English origins.

Medium-full on the palate, the beer remains that way through much of its taste- not allowing much dryness or crispness to occur in its finish. Warm and semi-dry, it's a wonderful ale that balances a bit too much toward the malt for even an Imperiao IPA for me.

This poured out as a orange color with a white head on top. Very nice thin retention and sticky lacing. The smell of the beer is a bit on the dank side, some floral hops and citrus in there as well. The taste of the beer is slightly sweet up front, with a piney lemon flavor. The malts are a bit sweet. The mouthfeel is decent, good medium body and carbonation. Overall it's a pretty good brew.

12oz format poured into an oversized tulip glass. Nearly no head forms above a copper/amber body. Poor retention with small dots of lacing and tight bubbles.

High malt character with interesting hop mixture. Toffee and caramel malt sweetness blends nicely with a fruity pineapple, pine resin, tangerines and grape bubble gum aroma some light grass sneaks in as well.

Caramel malt slightly grainy, hop flavor is rather unpronounced with dull throbbing of pine, earthiness and herbal tea. Bitterness is high and really breaks into the flavor profile early with interfering soapy dryness.

Medium body that gets lightened up significantly with active carbonation. Dries well but also has a soapy feel that gets in the way of discerning some flavors. Alcohol gets pushed aside by the bitterness.

A palate ruining IPA, good aroma but flavor profile is very average, the hops all got poured into alpha acid content and aroma leaving a weak earthy and pine flavored ale. The drying quality and the tight carbonation redeem this beer somewhat (only b/c I'm a sucker for active carbonation). A little more citrus could go a long way for this beer. Worth a try.

Serving Type: 22oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Dark amber in color with a short but dense off-white head that dissipates just a little too quickly. Great lacing.

Smell: Moderate strength aroma with hops leading. Tangerine, floral, and a hint of grass. Minimal pale malt aroma. Nice but not amazing.

Taste: The bitterness hits immediately. Very strong but not the smoothest bittering. Hops taste floral, citrus, and grassy with a slight hint of pine. Just enough pale malt backbone but a touch more would have been better.

Mouthfeel: Just a bit under a medium body with nice carbonation and a semi-dry finish.

Overall: I enjoyed this beer for the most part but would have liked to see a better tasting bitterness, a touch more malt, and a bit more heft in the body.

Now available in six packs! Bombers are great and all, but they are rip off.

A: Fairly dark orange hue. Almost bordering on a shade of garnet when held up to my desk lamp. The usual khaki foam, with about one and a half fingers worth. Pretty good retention, with the head softly receding. Leaving behind some nice lacing. Good clarity, with moderate to minimal looks on the carbonation. Bubbles are tiny.

S: Pretty big west coast aromas from the glass. Caramel and light toffee from the malt. Touch of cinnamon. Pineapple sweetness via the alcohol, some citrus. Not overloaded on grapefruit. Notes of pine needles, a bit of resin.

T: Mango and papaya flesh on the tip. Almost immediately overtaken by an assertive bitterness through the mid palate. Finishes oily and a bit astringent, with tangerine and grapefruit rind in the palate intermingling with a piney, almost ashen, bitterness. Finishes very dry.

M: Deceptively light, even given the style. The brewer did an excellent job in hiding the malt bill and the high abv.

O: I'm impressed. Smells like it's going to be all malt and tastes like nothing of the sort. An exceptionally bitter 82 IBU's, this is Fig Mountain's best beer to date.

Poured a caramel amber color with two fingers of off-white head. Below average lacing, average-to-below average retention.

Smelled a lot like their Hoppy Poppy IPA I had a few weeks ago. Got sweet floral hops up front, followed by caramel and toffee malts. Even a little bit of bubble gum in the nose. Worked nice together. Had me looking forward to the taste.

Tasted initially reminded me of Manzanita’s Chaotic, but not as strong. Still got the floral hops. Also Columbus hops coming through. Bitter finish, but not overwhelming.

Medium-to-light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Long bitter finish.

A bit disappointed overall after having a few of their other beers (notably their IPA and brown ale.). Would probably give it another try, since I’m a sucker for DIPA’s, but still.

A genuinely orange color in the globe glass. Enough foam and plenty of suds on the palate.

Taste is the classic big hop citrus rind mouthful. Rather sharp and acideic on the tongue. Orange peel aroma and grapefruit pith bitterness. Lots of malt, which just seems to jack up the alcohol content while the hop thugs horse around. I wish hops would get expensive again.

The slightly sweet maltiness makes a brief appearance. I can't find anything interesting to say about this beer. It's sort of watery for a DIPA, which is not a bad thing, and it does have a nice foamy mouthfeel. But my lips hurt. Can I go now?

22 oz bottle bought at Best Damn in San Diego.
