Dark brown with a golden cast. Looks nice enough in the big Duvel tulip with a very nice foam-up on every pour. Pleasant sudsy mouthfeel.

There is a distinct chocolate aroma, though they don't brag about any additive flavorings. Even a touch of Mexican cocoa with the cinnamon. A bitterish rasp makes it all go down easier. Brewery says this is 29 IBUs with Northern Brewer and Cascade hops. A little thin and sharp, with a hint of butter and nuts, but certainly more flavorful than the run of the litter with this style. Bitter aftertaste of old coffee and walnut skins.

This brewery seems to be out of the gate and running. We'll see how they do, but this is really a decent Brown Ale. A credit to its race, as they used to say. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Liticker's in San Diego.

Dry toasty, and borrowing a page from IPA, this Cascadian Black Ale does all things that American Brown Ales do but with a racy smack of hops for extra measure.

Deep brown in color, the beer doesn't try to hard to look black- but does release a creamy tan head that caps the beer with firm retention and random lace. The beer looks like a substantial Brown Ale.

But sharp hop aromas project notions of citrus peels, fresh-cut grass, and pine needles. Backed by a stern malt base of heavy toast, cocoa, coffee, nuts, and a tinge of campfire and grape; the ale is as much Brown Ale or Porter as it is IPA.

Semi-firm sweetness of burnt caramel, toast char and walnuts set the stage while wood coffee grounds and cocoa powder become the earthy elements that reign in the hops. At the middle, hoppy citrus taste is dry and more of the pith and peels of oranges and grapefruits than the juicier pulp. As the beer finishes, it becomes dry with smoldering bitterness and light sourish bite.

Medium bodied, the malt textures are lifted by zesty carbonation and helps to deliver a quick and dry finish. Mild warmth and slight grain-derived astringency bring rise to the bitter resins that continue in aftertaste.

As a very hoppy dark ale, there's a lot of hop-malt embattlement going on, but in the end, the hops win. But the beer's conflicting tastes keeps the palate confused but also intrigued right down to the last drink.

A: two finger cappuccino head. Brown bordering on garnet. Excellent clarity.

S: toffee, Burnt sugar, milk chocolate, touch of dark fruit. Bit of leather.

T: light chocolate, raisined fruit, woody finish with more dark fruit in the end. Borderline BBQ in taste.

M: Runs on the thin side for a brown. Light bodied, but fairly subdued carbonation.

O: good brown ale. Runs a tad thin in the body, but otherwise very flavorful.

Nutty brown color with 1-2 fingers of tan head. Average lacing on the sides, wet and foamy. Better retention.

Smelled chocolate, Cascade hops, caramel, toffee and lots of bitterness.

Tasted dark chocolate, regular chocolate, toffee and caramel, backed my Cascade hops.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Above average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

A pretty good debut (for me) by Figueroa. I love the brown ale and hoppy mixes. Try it.

On-tap at Sides Hardware & Shoes (it's a restaurant, not a hardware store)! On to the beer:

Leather brown colored in the glass, dots of lace sticking around as the beer's level goes down. The nose is a very attractive thing. There's a big dose of toffee crisp and caramel, and there's a sqeeze of hops which adds an extra layer of goodness to the aroma.

And it continues into the taste. Perhaps not as seductive as the aroma, but the idea of a brown ale with a sweet body and a sqeeze of hop juice holds in the flavor. It's a little heartier than medium, yet not full bodied. But it is easy to drink.

Inspiring, whether it's for a cold winter envening by the fireplace or with a summer afternoon lunch. Add this to the list of brown ales which to turn a Newcastle fan towards.

Nice medium dark brown with a reddish hue, little tan foam and some lace on the side of the glass. The smell of roasted malts and mild hops with a hint of chocolate had a pleasant aroma. The taste was of dark roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate and a kind of nutty flavored finish. Not overly bitter or sweet. A nicely balanced brown ale and a pleasant find. Would buy this again when in the area!

Pours a clear, medium brown color with a quickly attenuating, even. The aroma consists of dark roasted malt, notes of chocolate, and coffee acidity. The mouthfeel is magnificent. Perfect balance between the carbonation and creaminess perfectly accentuate the woody chocolate, ripe, dark fruit, and coffee acidity flavors. Neil loves this beer. So do I.

Thanks to my bowling teammate Chris for this one

App- A amber/brown mix in the glass and a bit of a clearer brown ale. Had a good depth of color as it sat. A puffy long lasting two finger head formed and then slid gently in the glass to leave some nice sticky lace.

Smell- A pretty standard brown ale. Was a bit malty and nutty but balanced. A touch of hop bitter in the nose was a welcome aromtic treat. Nothing really amazing but solid.

Taste- Again, like the nose this flavor profile was the standard brown ale. Malty, nutty, a touch roasty and a touch of hoppy bitter to make it all blend well together.

Mouth- A nice medium full body with a medium carbonation. Had a good residual malty, nutty flavor.

Drink- A pretty good brown. Nothing outstanding, nothing abnormal either. Solid brew and nice to try a new brewery.

On tap for the 2nd Anniversary event at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, nuts, and a slight fruity aroma. Taste is of roasted and toasted malt and roasted nuts. There is a medium roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good brown ale with some very roasty flavors.
