Notes from 10/13/10

A:Pours a deep copper color with a fingers worth of head that falls fairly quickly,
Spotty lacing left down the glass

S:Average smell on the nose. A little bit of citrus/pine hops along with some toffee
malt as well

T:Somewhat better than nose detects. Toffee malt up front followed up by the citrus hops.
Backend has a linger of bitterness that sticks around on the palate for a while.

M:Medium body to this one with a small amount of carbonation, palate is left a little dry

D:This is my first brew from Thomas Creek so I didn't really know what to expect, it
ended up being just slightly above average for me. Appearance was decent but nothing
really coming thru on the nose, taste was fairly enjoyable but nothing great. Good to try but probably won't pick up again.

3.53/5  rDev +4.1%
look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a reddish caramel brown color…it’s a nice dark color, but somewhat transparent, I do see a few bubbles in the middle…head is a mixture of big and little bubbles, creating a thin layer that covers the top…it does liven up a bit with a couple of swirls, but settles rather quickly…(3.5/5)

Smell: First thing I get is an earthy yeast aroma, somewhat musky and woodsy…a very balanced IPA, I’m getting a nice mix of hops and malts here…things are very earthy & woodsy with touches of caramel, mild sweetness (honey maybe) and pale malts…it’s got kind of a syrupy fruit cocktail thing happening here too, but it’s no where near as strong as all the earthy tones…not bad…(3.5/5)

Taste: Hmmm…starts very earthy, with tons of woodsy/earthy bitterness, yeast and caramel hitting my tongue first…it’s very balanced I have to say…there’s a peachy type fruit sweetness playing a background role keeping the musky notes in check…malts are on the pale side for sure and it has a bit of noticeable cascade hops bite that shows late…(3.5/5)

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with medium to full carbonation…fluffs up into a cloud of earthy/woodsy bitterness and caramel/pale malts…easy drinking, smooth and finishes crisply…there is a woodsy bitterness that gently lingers in the after taste…(3.75/5)

Overall: While this isn’t my typical style of IPA, this is very drinkable…usually I get sick of all the earthy/woodsy/musky hops and yeast strains, but it seems they’ve mixed things to just the right proportions for my taste buds…with it’s relatively low ABV, only 5.5%, this is a brew that works well with having to socialize, make somewhat critical life decisions or just walking the disc golf course…if hoppy citrus bombs are not your style, than this one may be right up your alley…it’s not gonna blow your mind, but it’s easy to recommend and is a brew worthy of a six pack pick up…(3.5/5)

Appearance: On top is a thick rocky head off white in color beneath that is a clear amber colored beer with brown hues.

Aroma: Tropical fruit, simple syrup, peach, pear, grapefruit, piney, light breadiness.

Taste: Dry in the front. Tropical fruit sweetness with light rye notes. Piney, bready, grapefruit. The mouthfeel is smooth but it has a bready dry finish.

Notes: A decent beer not too bad for a warm day and decently drinkable. Cheers.

Nice clean pour, beautiful color, nice carbonation and attractive lacing.
Smelled fragrant with a nice citrus aroma.
Taste was unbalanced. Malt flavors were masked by the bittering hops. Those added for flavor were low key for the style, IMHO.

So you have a pretty pour, with a beer that smells great but doesn't deliver on the palate because it was too bitter. If this beer tasted a little more like it smelled and was balanced, I would have rated it higher.

Pours out nicely and looks really good, but this one is all hops with no real malt presence to balance it out. This is exactly what I don't like in an IPA - one that is so bitter that it isn't refreshing to me at all. Has a lingering aftertaste that just won't go away.

Clean amber with off white head that has trailers.
Orange blossom, resin and honey on the nose but some stewy grain, too.
Nutty granola with stewed orange and pine sap.
Skunky finish and oily linger.
Medium, clingy, sticky.

Big toasty Victory malts and Fuggles hops character make this heavier (and more English) than it should be, especially at 5.5%. No citrus or fruit to lighten the dank. Just a bit of hard work.

At our house, we use a 10-point scale. For this particular beer our ratings are as follows:

Her - 7.5 Warm. Heady. Carbonated. A little "brown" but good!
Him - ?

(Not sure why He didn't make any comments/notes about this brew. With no mention of piney-hoppiness from her, chances are he didn't hate it.) Cheers!
