poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass, served at cellar temp.

dark, dark ruby which betrays it's red hues only under bright light. Thick off white head.

aroma is cake batter malt with a faint dark fruitiness.

mouthfeel is soft and gentle.

flavor: unique, nuts, dark fruits, toffee. lots of pale malts, a touch of vanilla, an explosion of flavors.

notes; super yummy, tasty, hope to buy again.

Very dark mahogany brown. Almost no head, just a little film.

Sweet molasses on nose.

Odd spicy taste quite sharp in a way. A little licorice, a little prune juice. As it warms some port and lemonade flavours come to the fore and the spiciness becomes more dominant. A strange alcohol burn also, which given the ABV is quite frankly odd.

Lightly carbed.

Odd beer, doesn't really work for this palate with somewhat harsh spicy flavours.

Dark brown with som ruby highlights near the bottom of the pint glass. Thin, off-white head that dissipates quickly. Lots of sediment which was hard to avoid pouring. Dark, roasted malt aroma with some caramel notes as well as raisin and licorice undertones, and a whiff of ethanol. The flavor is malty, featuring more roasted malts adding a hint of chocolate and caramel. Little to no hop presence. Medium body, bordering on being slightly thin or watery.

500mL bottle (no date) poured into a Tulip Stout glass.

Appearance: Mostly clear dark ruby red ale with the remnants of a off-white head. The pour didn't yield much of a head and all that was formed was a ring at the edge, the faintest wisps of foam across the top, and one or two isolated islands of lacing. Nice color, bummer for the lack of lacing and foam. Noted looking in the bottle at the end of the pour that the sediment stayed behind and didn't come along with the pour.

Smell: With a swirl, toffee + toasted/roasted malt and some molasses. Otherwise a bit malty with some metallic notes as well as something herbal/spicy in there towards the back. Interesting.

Taste: Toffee malt, mild coffee bitterness, hints of bittersweet chocolate, and molasses. Tasty. English hop character absent - there are bitter flavors to counter the malt, but it comes out more as roasted/toasted flavors.

Mouthfeel: Typical English ale carbonation (maybe a little bit more carbonated than normal) but otherwise a bit watery.

Overall / Drinkability: I wonder if this would best on cask rather than in a bottle. It's tasty, smells interesting, and overall, I could see myself having another one - a full pint no less.

bottle purchased from nikki's liquors in providence.

A. rich darkish brown with a red tint. one finger head, subsides quickly.
S. a lot going on here, fruit cake, toasted rye bread, key lime pie
T. way complex. the crust of key lime pie cinnamon graham crackers, fresh rye bread, ginger beer, belgian yeast. ginger, sweet bread finish.
M. light/medium bodied, nice and clean. very pleasant
O. so complex yet very drinkable. i cant wait to try it at Daleside.

An interesting beer I saw on a local store shelf. Poured from 500ml bottle into a standard pint glass. Once poured the color is dark brown with a reddish tint. Only a half inch of head formed but it had good retention before settling to a thick cap. Heavy lacing is left on the glass.

Pleasant English hop aroma upfront. Slightly herbal and grassy. Mild soapiness as well. The malt gives off hints of caramel.

When I think of what a dark English ale would taste like, this beer fits the thought soundly. Sweet caramel malt lays a foundation for the English hops. I love these hops with their herbal/grassy notes. Just a little more rich and sweet than an EPA. Bitterness is low to moderate. No alcohol presence.

I would of liked a little more body for the sweetness brought on by the malt. Nicely carbonated but a little rough.

Pleasantly surpised by this beer. Maybe not as good as Stingo or Geary's, but definately worth a try.

A: Pours a clear light coffee color with a thin veneer of white head.

S: Saccharine, caramel character with a strong semblance to corn syrup.

T: Creamy sweet, toffee-like roasted malt character with a slight vinegary sheen followed by marginally bitter medicinal hops and a slightly bitter caramel aftertaste.

M: Medium-bodied bordering on thin with lots of tiny, effervescent carbonation that consistently tingle the tongue.

D: Certainly a drinkable brew, but definitely unique in that I didn't think a lighter alcohol version of an ale existed which had the same characteristics as usually much darker stouts/porters.

Thanks to Jwpv for this one. Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a very nice brown, with somewhat of a reddish tint, with a half inch of khaki-colored head that had low retention and lacing.

The aroma featured nice roasted notes, some dark fruit and perhaps a bit of coffee and tobacco. That would also describe the flavors pretty accurately as well.

The body was pleasantly full without being heavy or filling. Drinkability was very nice, smooth and easy. Overall, a nice easy brew that's worth your time.

Pours a healthy dark brown, a bit darker than cola, with a decent beige head, medium-thick and medium density, leaves a thin crown and thin whispy lace that isn't particularly sticky. Fairly steady bead - yeah, looks pretty good.

Nose is sweet and quite strong. A good belt of treacle assaults the olfactory, with a dark syrupy aroma providing notes of burnt toffee, dark chocolate and a bit of a buttery character. An ethyl alcohol whiff gives a scent like rum, and there is a light mint character lurking as well. Interesting nose but a little overpowering in the sweet stakes for me.

Taste starts off with a sweetness, mostly caramel in character, with a slight fruitiness lingering behind it, fresh blueberries and a hint of citrus. Mid-palate is quite chocolatey, with a good roasted grain character and an oaky character being quite prominent. Finish is vinous - aspects of a rich burgundy with a dryness on the feel, more of that oak and a good hint of molasses as well. It states that there should be a lot of spice, but I don't get a lot, although there is a slightly herbal/phenolic flavour towards the back, reminiscent of thistle or lavender.

It's quite a strongly-flavoured beer, but falls short of being robust in character. It's too sweet to be really ball-grabbing and it comes off as a fairly mild 'strong' ale. Pleasant, but too much of things I don't like so much, and underdone on those I do.

Quite a lot of body on it, but it does feel a bit thin right at the back, and incredibly drying. It feels like a big hangover-inducing beer.

.5L bottle poured into imperial pint glass:

A: Ruby-brown-coffee body with mocha head, one-finger. Head thinned out pretty quick, but still pretty overall, with a good cap and modest lacing.

S: Fruit and nuts from the start, with a distinct yeastiness. Ginger strikes me a bit confusing, but it works well with the yeast. Wow, that's a lot of ginger. A milk-chocolatey characteristic develops stronger in time. It's even herbal to a degree.

T: Ginger is still at the forefront, as well as the yeast. The malts take on a more chocolatey, slightly coffee dynamic with a touch of nuttiness. That familiar soy sauce flavor shows up from the yeast. It's slightly peppery.

M: Crisp. Given the heavily malty flavors, it might have been suited better by a fuller body.

D: I don't understand this beer. It has a ton of flavors, but they're not necessarily the best. I'm pretty bored of it already, and don't anticipate having it again. Its flavor combination is remarkable, but nonetheless off-putting. Given the amount of soy sauce and ginger, I can only imagine how this beer would taste with sushi.

I wouldn't classify this as an English Strong Ale, not at 5.5% ABV and with no real strong alcohol presence. I didn't take notes why sampling the beer last night, but two words pretty much define the beer, the first is ginger and the other is caramel malts. Put the two together, with some modest carbonation, some complex sweet malts, a bit of leafy hop in the finish, and this is the beer in a nutshell. It is a nice, complex, enjoyable beer that I will re-review in order to write a fuller, more comprehensive review at a later time.

The aroma is sweet. It's got toasted malt, cola, soy/A1 sauce, spices/herbs, ginger, and fruit. The appearance is deep amber with a small head. The flavor is like the the aroma but has a papery finish. The palate is thin. Overall it's quite interesting but not great.

Bottle, as pictured, pours a clear chestnut brown body with a small beige head. Attractive patch lacing is left down the glass.

Aroma opens with chocolate and caramel notes, joined quickly with a metallic mineral hint. Spices are in the background,suggestive of grains of paradise and cardomam. Floral and minty hops add to the exotic nose.

Light medium in body with a subtle medium carbonation.

Taste opens with a hint of milk chocolate and some brown ale style nuttiness. Cardomom and grains of paradise are the only spices I can identify but the spice bill reminds me of what I've encountered in some saisons. Some truly strange notes are picked up, but not at all unpleasant. This comes off to me as having lots of cola and Lipton's tea character, with some mint thrown in. Floral hops keep things from going insane.

Quite drinkable, though unusual.

Dark brown color, almost ruby when backlit, with thick rocky head and good staying power.

Distinctive smell, malty with a floral and minty hop aroma and slight spice note.

Sweet malt flavor with a unique nuttiness and oily resinous hop bit. An unusual taste that is quite good.

Medium body, very smooth even for an English ale.

An excellent beer, and quite quaffable at 5.5%. I could have a few of these and will definitely search this one out again.

Appearance: Pours dark reddish brown with no head.

Smell: Molasses and carmel smells. The first thing I thought was it smells kind of like a Jack and Coke. Very sweet and alcoholic nose.

Taste: Roasted malts, molases, carmel, and a little hopps. Not at all what I was expecting. The alcohol feel is heavier than you would expect for a beer with a 5.5 ABV but it was by no means harsh.

Mouthfeel: Very light carbonation and a good balance make this an easy beer to drink.

Pour a chocolate brown color with a nice fluffy light brown head that settled into a thick cap. The aroma is of buttery malt, minerals, raisins, and spice. The taste is of rusty water, very slight chocolate, raisins, pine and allspice. The look and aroma scream malty but the tastes fails to deliver, though there is a nice spice kick. The feel is light and watery, well carbonated and finishes with a slight malt bitterness. An average English ale that looks and smells great but disappoints some in the flavor. I was expecting a more robust malt flavor.

Not a huge fan of English ale. Let me say that before this.

A: Pours a super deep red color. Almost like dark amber. 2 fingers of slightly tan head. Good lacing.

S: Molasses and malt. Little spicy. It also has that special something that can only be called the UK Ale smell. Not bad just there.

T: Sweet up front. Then it goes into a tea like malt taste. Much more complex than many other British ales out there.

M: I know for the style it is good but I want this just a tad thicker. Carbonation is good.

D: Super easy drinking. I would kill for this on cask. That would be mind blowing. Until then just good. Not something I would seek out again.
