On tap for the 4th Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival at Union Station in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear dark reddish-brown with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a slight caramel flavor on the finish. There is a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but it tastes better than it smells in my opinion.

on tap at devils den in philly

Pours a deep, dark red color with some brighter cherry tones. A fluffy beige head retains well for a bit, leaving plenty of film and lacing behind on the glass.

Pretty rich nose with a thick helping of roasted malts and caramel. Toffee with raisin and cherry, notes of alcohol and pine bitterness.

Bitter hops with pine and sticky resin up front. Some lighter citrus notes followed by heavier, sweeter tones. Slightly bittersweet toffee and caramel, followed by raisin and burnt sugar. Finishes bitter, hoppy, and boozy.

Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, sticky, full, and slightly heavy on the tongue. Pretty tasty imperial red, slightly sweet and boozy overall though.

SAVOR 2011. Served in a SAVOR goblet.

Pours a clear amber color with a small white head and some good lacing on the way down. Thin collar as it settles. The nose carries some fairly heavy caramel with some light citrus hops behind that. Some bready malt as well. Earthy hops come in to play as well. The flavor is bready with a fairly-strong malt presence. Earthy and citrus hops bring a bit of flavor. Good body with a nice level of bitterness. Pretty solid beer, though straddles the malt/hop line a little too closely.

My wife and I both had a glass of this on draft last night at Instant Replay.

Served in a Chimay chalice glass.

A:Pours a auburn red amber, with a copper hue, with a generous inch of frothy head, leaving light coating lacing.

S: Mixture of some tropical and dark fruit hop notes. Dates, grapfruit, mixed with light brown sugar, caramel, and Belgian yeast.

T: My first glass was pretty malt forward, where as my wife's glass was a bit hoppier, interesting. Both were solid ales though, that matched the nose, carmale malt, light brown sugar, mild spice from the hops, and some grapefruit and date fruit flavors melded. The 10% is not really evident, but it's a nice sipping ale.

M: Full, but not sticky. Good medium carbonation, and a mild bitter finish.

O: Pretty solid Strong Red Ale. Noting crazy complex, but it was a decent sipper for $4. Glad I got to try it.

A - Good red look, some lace and minimal head, pored slow into a snifter.

S - Smells malty and has that red kinda smell, caramel and some bread.

T - Taste is there for a double red, pretty intense red flavor for a red. That being said... large malts, large toned down hop thing going on.

M - Nice carbonation, just about right. Goes down smooth, smooth aftertaste of malts.

O - Great DR brew that makes its stance welcome at any time. This incorporates a nice balance of malts and similar taste of hops.

A: The beer is hazy reddish brown in color and has a ring of beige bubbles encircling the edge of the glass and some lacing in the center.
S: Aromas of pine resin hops dominate the nose, which also has some notes of caramel
T: Like the smell, the taste is piney and the hops contribute a moderate amount of bitterness, although this is not that overpowering because for the most part the hops are balanced by the underlying malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There are some hints of dryness in the finish.
D: I'm not sure if I could drink more than one of these at a time with all of the bitterness.

Had this on tap at the Hulmeville Inn.

A- Good 1 finger head retention from a foamy offwhite poor. Stays for a long time despite high abv. Brew is a burnt brown sugar/cinnamon color, and charred cedar. Almost opaque. Lace blankets left on the glass.

S- Piney hops sting the nostrils upfront. Good fruitiness following this in the form of grapefruit, raisins and cherries.

T- The malt bill hit me upfront with this before transitioning into the hop profile. Nice and hoppy with fruit flavors. Apple, berry, citrus, and earthy taste. Tastes like hop cones were used in this one. Good bittering.

M- Light to medium body. Smooth upfront, then becomes bittering. Not puckering, but deffinitely prickly on the tongue.

D- High ABV warms the body and becomes noticeable throughout, but is still drinkable. Nice and bittering, I'm curious to see the IBU rating for this. Not my favorite hop flavor, but would deffinitely have again.

Pours a very dark amber color, with very creamy tan head.

The scent was of caramel malts, fruit, and floral hops.

The taste was initially strong alcohol and bitter floral hops, then gave way to caramel malts and hints of fruit and pine.

Full bodied, creamy and thick, not much carbonation.

I thought this was a pretty good beer, there were many flavors throughout the beer making it very interesting.

pours a semi-clear light brown with a small off-white head, and good lacing.

smell is of light grapefruit, sweet malt, and grass.

taste is thick, caramel, a little cocoa, and hops, end is a little on the chocky side, and nicely bitter.

more of a cross between a pale ale and an IPA.

An interesting take on the strong ale category. Kind of a cross bteween the Imperial Porter and Red Ales with unfortunately none of the better characteristiocs of either category with the exception of the high ABV. It pours like your typical red beer and ah some of the body of an imperial style beer but overall just fails to impress. Not a bad beer by any means but more just run of the mill, nothing that jumps out and grabs you and makes you say "WOW,"

Great double amber!

Such a gorgeous ruby red with very nice head and lacing.

Pine hops straight up, followed by sweet caramel. That was pretty much the taste too. The pine hops attack you taste buds, but the caramel malts battle it back. This happens about twice more before you swallow the sip. This brew is well balanced and so enjoyable. One of the better brews i've had in a bit. It was greatly balanced and the alcohol wasn't noticable.

A - Poured like a Coca-cola with a deep copper body that boarders on being brown...a tan head stands about two fingers and stays for the whole beer...lacing cascades down the glass

S - There are some fresh hop aromas coming out...very earthy and again fresh...there is a faint malt presence...which leads me to believe this is a hopped up red ale

T - A complete turn around from the nose...but not in a bad way at all...the hops are really subdued in the flavor but they are able to provide the perfect bitterness at the end of this beer...once again leaving with the earthy flavors...the malts are the star here...they are perfectly roasted and give off caramel and chocolate flavors...the chocolate is very subtle but it's a nice addition to the beer...the flavors all merry together nicely

M - Medium bodied...it's very smooth and creamy and has that nice bite

D - I did not realize this was 10% when I ordered it...the alcohol is hidden nicely but I would just be careful...I like how the aroma and flavors reversed themselves...this is a nice offering from Coronado and I'm looking forward to more

A solid double IPA. The color is a crimson red with a small beige color head that isapeered quickly. The aroma is some chocolate malt with piney and citrus hop notes predominate. The flavor and is all hops with little malt. Piney hop flavor throughout. This is a very hoppy beer and has a big alcohol kick to it. Decent Belgian lacing. Coronado is an overlooked brewery in my opinion that is producing some quality beers but without all the press of other good San Diego breweries.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. It is very dark ruby red with a short ring of bubbles for a head. The smell is oddly slight chocolate and heavy pinecones, which makes me think of chocolate mints. The taste deviates (much like the Idiot IPA) and is very green hops almost like green melon rinds, the malts seem totally overpowered and there is a lingering bitterness. This is a very hoppy beer but I'm not sure I dig the green flavors. For some reason both Coronado brews i have had smelled much better than they taste.

A- attractive near opaque garnet brew, sporting a 1/2" off white head and silky lacing, with decent retent

S- caramel, toffee, toasted malts, malty

T- quite the complexity of flavors here. malts flavors range from dark fruits, chocolate, caramel, and toffee. while the hops bring about earthy flavors and some raw oils. slight alcohol presence throughout

M- full body, hops are abusive and tongue numbing, some alcoholic heat supports the throttling of the palate started by the hops

D- surprisingly drinkable and absolutely delicious. shares some similarities to a scotch ale with malts, competitive with Bear Republic's Red Rocket Ale

Appearance: Red to brown in the glass with burnt orange head.

Smell: Nutty, chocolate, toffee, earth

Taste: Same as aroma. This beer could be paired comfortably with nutty hard cheeses and gamy meats (lamb etc).

Mouthfeel: Full body with a creamy and long finish which is my own favorite part of the beer.

Overall a good beer that would work well with food or can be enjoyed alone. The cream mouthfeel leads me to believe it would work well paired with nutty deserts like pecan or apple pie the sweetness of the pie would complement the earth of the beer very well.

A 220z bomber picked up at Green's in downtown Columbia, SC. Another brew I can't get back home in Atl, GA

A - a dark cloudy amber red. Tons of sediment in this unfiltered beer. 2 fingers of head and sticky lace all over the glass. It doesn't get any better looking than this one

S - Huge caramel malts with some piney hops at the end. Delicous

T - Wow, as good as it looked and smelled, the taste did not dissapoint. Carmel, toffee up front, nice hop kick in the rear at the end. Red style is prevalent.

M - Full bodied, high in carbonation. Very smooth and well balanced

O - If you like imperial red's, this beer is for you

Pours a murky copper brown gold in the light. A huge light mocha froth forms and coats almost the whole glass. There is some thick ugly sediment the flops out of the glass, telling me my beer isn't perfect.

Smell is roasted warm malt, and a hint of pine.

Tasted of plenty of toasted malt, sweet caramel and chocolate in the middle and a citrus pine finish.

Feels a tad abrasive on the front of the tongue, but not horribly so. Medium bodied and and filling.

I liked the beer, plenty of flavor, a bit discouraged by the sediment, but otherwise, nice.

Tulip

A - a swampy red/brown, half finger almost tan head and sticky lacing

S - dog/cat food, booze, plants, lots of malts, decent hops, super biscuit yeast and a huge funk. Very plant like

T - booze, weird hops, toasted malts, nice funky yeast, some very ripe fruits and a decent floral very bitter hop

M - medium plus body, medium minus acidity, weird balance, decent complexity and very long finish

D/O - this was over hyped for me. Heard it was amazing and come to find it is, just ok. Their idiot ipa is so effing tasty! Heard this was better. It is a good beer, but just that good! If you like to get drunk, get you some of this!

Final thought - 10% and $6 a pop. Good times for sure! Other than that, this beer is just, ok!

Edit: fell asleep and left the rest in the fridge, poured the rest and wow, it really opens up when it has so time. Very nice beer. Updated smell and taste score

Bottle picked up upon recommendation from the bottle shop employee while on vacation in Escondido. Poured a clear runny dark orange color to standard pint. The head was a few fingers high with decent retention. Caramel, orange liqueur, and subdued tobacco/black tea notes account for an intetesting flavor.Medium bodied and slightly sweet with mild bitterness. Well balanced malt and hop flavors that included the likes of honey, caramel, and citrus candy. Hides the higher abv well. Solid but not my favorite.

Pours a lovely shiny ruby colour, rich and clear. Head is beige, nice and dense and retaining thin crown. Lace is good and sticky. Looks wonderful.

Smells a little bit... weizeny? Plenty of apple notes to it with a hint of banana, caramel and corella pear. Not much else, really, mostly a weak fruit aroma. Definitely lacking in character and complexity.

Taste has malts that the nose just doesn't have. Still has that mild, weak cidery ester on mid-palate but starts with nice, toffeed malt, developing rich peanut and salted caramel but doesn't quite cover the bland appley notes midway which do turn into enjoyable enough hop flavours but not really big or bold enough for my taste. Yeah, not bad, good characters for red ale, just not enough, feels a bit lacking.

A bit watery in the mouth, but feels fuller as it goes down. Not bad; not great.

Yeah, can see what they're going for and at times it seems they've hit it, and at others it feels like a big miss. Decent, though. Certainly drinkable.

Pours a reddish brown color with a good solid foamy head which is thick and frothy. Not alot of carbonation. Aroama is mostly fragrant hops with balancing sweet malts. Taste is sweet and malty with maybe a hint of roasted malts or maybe Vienna malts. Hops are light in flavor and are more bitter then flavorful. Smooth but bitter. A good beer I was thinking this might be along the lines of a Nugget Nectar. It wasn't. What it was, was a good red ale. But be warned it sneaks up on you.

This brew poured out as a nice clear looking red color with a off white head on top. The head has a strong lacing and a good retention also. The smell of the beer has a good hoppy aroma with some undertone of caramel. The taste of the beer had some strong earthy hop flavors along with some nice sweet malts up front. The mouthfeel is dry and bitter with a good carbonation too. Overall it's not a bad brew in my opinion. I would drink this one again.

Called an "Imperial Red Ale" on the label. This one was purchased from Berkeley Bowl in Berkeley, CA. Brought back in my luggage to Sydney and shared with @LaitueGonflable and @tobeerornottobe.

Lovely colour, a bright ruby red hue, genuinely red almost like a light pinot noir or a deep rosé. Head is pocked with large bubbled, forming an off-white mesh on the top of the glass. Regular persistent lacing however, forming a pleasant frieze over the top of the beer. Looks very nice.

Nose is a bit disappointing to be honest. Clear hop fragrance comes through, but it is overridden by a rather strong apple sweetness, giving green appleskin tartness to the mix. This is also matched with a rather potent alcohol sharpness, and a hint of something spicy, almost like cinnamon. It's an odd aroma, and doesn't really match nicely with the style.

Taste is similarly lacklustre. Thin reedy palate, without much body, depth, or hop character. Instead, there's the sharp bite of the booze, and a mild sweet apple note. Some bitterness comes through on the back, but without the body or substance, it doesn't have much to offset.

Feel is incredibly weak. Actually rather impressive for a beer of this ABV, but it slips through the palate without giving any weight or substance.

This was a pretty big disappointment for me. I can't believe how lacking in flavour this was. It's like a pale shadow of a good American Red Ale. To call it "Imperial"? Bah, humbug.

Pours a deep mahogany with an ample fluffy off white head. Great lacing down the glass.

Smells of caramel, citrus and piney hops and a little bready malt.

Initial flavor burst is heavy in chocolate rounding into some malty caramel flavors with a bitter finish. Dank piney resinous is here throughout.

Mouthfeel is pretty thick and creamy. Lowish carbonation levels.

Very solid brew from one of my favorite underrated brewers. Imperial Reds are my favorite anyway and the subtle hint of chocolate added to this one makes it very unique and tasty.
