Appearance: Red to brown in the glass with burnt orange head.

Smell: Nutty, chocolate, toffee, earth

Taste: Same as aroma. This beer could be paired comfortably with nutty hard cheeses and gamy meats (lamb etc).

Mouthfeel: Full body with a creamy and long finish which is my own favorite part of the beer.

Overall a good beer that would work well with food or can be enjoyed alone. The cream mouthfeel leads me to believe it would work well paired with nutty deserts like pecan or apple pie the sweetness of the pie would complement the earth of the beer very well.

A 220z bomber picked up at Green's in downtown Columbia, SC. Another brew I can't get back home in Atl, GA

A - a dark cloudy amber red. Tons of sediment in this unfiltered beer. 2 fingers of head and sticky lace all over the glass. It doesn't get any better looking than this one

S - Huge caramel malts with some piney hops at the end. Delicous

T - Wow, as good as it looked and smelled, the taste did not dissapoint. Carmel, toffee up front, nice hop kick in the rear at the end. Red style is prevalent.

M - Full bodied, high in carbonation. Very smooth and well balanced

O - If you like imperial red's, this beer is for you

Pours a murky copper brown gold in the light. A huge light mocha froth forms and coats almost the whole glass. There is some thick ugly sediment the flops out of the glass, telling me my beer isn't perfect.

Smell is roasted warm malt, and a hint of pine.

Tasted of plenty of toasted malt, sweet caramel and chocolate in the middle and a citrus pine finish.

Feels a tad abrasive on the front of the tongue, but not horribly so. Medium bodied and and filling.

I liked the beer, plenty of flavor, a bit discouraged by the sediment, but otherwise, nice.

Tulip

A - a swampy red/brown, half finger almost tan head and sticky lacing

S - dog/cat food, booze, plants, lots of malts, decent hops, super biscuit yeast and a huge funk. Very plant like

T - booze, weird hops, toasted malts, nice funky yeast, some very ripe fruits and a decent floral very bitter hop

M - medium plus body, medium minus acidity, weird balance, decent complexity and very long finish

D/O - this was over hyped for me. Heard it was amazing and come to find it is, just ok. Their idiot ipa is so effing tasty! Heard this was better. It is a good beer, but just that good! If you like to get drunk, get you some of this!

Final thought - 10% and $6 a pop. Good times for sure! Other than that, this beer is just, ok!

Edit: fell asleep and left the rest in the fridge, poured the rest and wow, it really opens up when it has so time. Very nice beer. Updated smell and taste score

Bottle picked up upon recommendation from the bottle shop employee while on vacation in Escondido. Poured a clear runny dark orange color to standard pint.The head was a few fingers high with decent retention. Caramel, orange liqueur, and subdued tobacco/black tea notes account for an intetesting flavor.Medium bodied and slightly sweet with mild bitterness. Well balanced malt and hop flavors that included the likes of honey, caramel, and citrus candy. Hides the higher abv well. Solid but not my favorite.

Pours a lovely shiny ruby colour, rich and clear. Head is beige, nice and dense and retaining thin crown. Lace is good and sticky. Looks wonderful.

Smells a little bit... weizeny? Plenty of apple notes to it with a hint of banana, caramel and corella pear. Not much else, really, mostly a weak fruit aroma. Definitely lacking in character and complexity.

Taste has malts that the nose just doesn't have. Still has that mild, weak cidery ester on mid-palate but starts with nice, toffeed malt, developing rich peanut and salted caramel but doesn't quite cover the bland appley notes midway which do turn into enjoyable enough hop flavours but not really big or bold enough for my taste. Yeah, not bad, good characters for red ale, just not enough, feels a bit lacking.

A bit watery in the mouth, but feels fuller as it goes down. Not bad; not great.

Yeah, can see what they're going for and at times it seems they've hit it, and at others it feels like a big miss. Decent, though. Certainly drinkable.

Pours a reddish brown color with a good solid foamy head which is thick and frothy. Not alot of carbonation. Aroama is mostly fragrant hops with balancing sweet malts. Taste is sweet and malty with maybe a hint of roasted malts or maybe Vienna malts. Hops are light in flavor and are more bitter then flavorful. Smooth but bitter. A good beer I was thinking this might be along the lines of a Nugget Nectar. It wasn't. What it was, was a good red ale. But be warned it sneaks up on you.

This brew poured out as a nice clear looking red color with a off white head on top. The head has a strong lacing and a good retention also. The smell of the beer has a good hoppy aroma with some undertone of caramel. The taste of the beer had some strong earthy hop flavors along with some nice sweet malts up front. The mouthfeel is dry and bitter with a good carbonation too. Overall it's not a bad brew in my opinion. I would drink this one again.

Called an "Imperial Red Ale" on the label. This one was purchased from Berkeley Bowl in Berkeley, CA. Brought back in my luggage to Sydney and shared with @LaitueGonflable and @tobeerornottobe.

Lovely colour, a bright ruby red hue, genuinely red almost like a light pinot noir or a deep rosé. Head is pocked with large bubbled, forming an off-white mesh on the top of the glass. Regular persistent lacing however, forming a pleasant frieze over the top of the beer. Looks very nice.

Nose is a bit disappointing to be honest. Clear hop fragrance comes through, but it is overridden by a rather strong apple sweetness, giving green appleskin tartness to the mix. This is also matched with a rather potent alcohol sharpness, and a hint of something spicy, almost like cinnamon. It's an odd aroma, and doesn't really match nicely with the style.

Taste is similarly lacklustre. Thin reedy palate, without much body, depth, or hop character. Instead, there's the sharp bite of the booze, and a mild sweet apple note. Some bitterness comes through on the back, but without the body or substance, it doesn't have much to offset.

Feel is incredibly weak. Actually rather impressive for a beer of this ABV, but it slips through the palate without giving any weight or substance.

This was a pretty big disappointment for me. I can't believe how lacking in flavour this was. It's like a pale shadow of a good American Red Ale. To call it "Imperial"? Bah, humbug.

Pours a deep mahogany with an ample fluffy off white head. Great lacing down the glass.

Smells of caramel, citrus and piney hops and a little bready malt.

Initial flavor burst is heavy in chocolate rounding into some malty caramel flavors with a bitter finish. Dank piney resinous is here throughout.

Mouthfeel is pretty thick and creamy. Lowish carbonation levels.

Very solid brew from one of my favorite underrated brewers. Imperial Reds are my favorite anyway and the subtle hint of chocolate added to this one makes it very unique and tasty.

Bottle. Pours a really dark auburn color with a tan head. Aroma was surprisingly great; really top notch for the style. Huge grapefruit nose with chewy caramel, grass and fruit/citrus. The first thing that struck me was the quality of the palate, which was velvety soft and somewhat coating. Flavor wasn’t quite as good as these elements, but it was still pretty nice. Solidly balanced, with a good amount of hops and caramel malt. A bit more hop focused, with flowers, earthy and citrus hops, but that is to be expected. Alcohol was present, but nothing too pronounced. Good stuff.

Poured into a wine glass. Beer is so red it is nearly brown with a thick off white / tan head of small bubbles, moderate carbonation, OK retention and some lacing on the glass. Looks like beer.

Aroma is strong, sweet, like malt syrup and mild alcohol.

MALT BOMB MALT BOMB. Whoa, this beer is thick, full bodied and heavy. It is sweet with a hint of booze, neither the high alcohol or the high carbonation can thin this thing out, just when you thought it could get any heavier the finish is super bitter and hoppy. I don't know how much of this I could drink but it is decent that is for sure.

Pours an effervescent chestnut with a finger of tan head. Great lacing & head retention

S: Breadyness & pine & not much else, even that fades over time

T: Follows the nose, some caramel & vanilla as well up front, along with some woody hops. Hints of chocolate up front, along oaky notes & more caramel & a touch of figgyness & more. Finishes with caramel sweetness, figgyness, dryness & some oaky notes

MF: Fairly chewy, over carbonated up front, but settles down nicely, then sticky

A nice offering, would buy this available here (picked this up in NC). Their Islander IPA was nice too, but my taste buds were compromised when i tried it, so I won't review that one

22oz bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint. Bottle generously provided as an extra by jodan, thanks Jordan!

A - This beer looks pretty good out of the gate. It's a reddish brown color, but where the glass is wider, it gets even harder to see through and is bordering on dark brown. It's pretty hazy as well. The head is a foamy, 2-fingered affair with great retention. The lacing on this is very nice as well, with thick mats of foam sloughing off from the head and cementing itself to the glass.

S - The nose on this is a blend of a copious amounts of malt, which gives off heavy caramel, molasses, and chocolate smells, and hops, which are sticky with pine resin. It's an interesting ratio that makes it seem fresh and almost come across as an American Barleywine. I am also getting oranges and grapes in the back-end.

T - After my first sip, I am almost immediately reminded of Stone's Arrogant Bastard, as if this is a more full-bodied yet less hoppy and bitter version of it. I'm not sure if it's the specific mixture of malts and hops, or the types used, but I am really getting that vibe. As it continues on, it does disengage from that similarity a bit, as it explores the chocolate and other malts more than Arrogant Bastard does, and these hops end rather citrusy. For a 9% beer, I'm not getting that much alcohol heat at all, although it does come through a little in the finish.

M - Mouthfeel is moderately heavy-bodied with good carbonation. This is pretty slick, which the generous hops certainly add to. Leaves a long-lasting bitter finish.

D/O - Drinkability is moderately high. I found myself enjoying this quite a bit more than I thought I would, but had to save what was left after my first glass for a later time. Despite that, I'm interested to see how this pairs with some food I'm cooking tomorrow.

Distinctly red cast to the dark amber color in the wine glass. Looks nice enough with lacing and bubbles up the sides. Head lasts well. Quite tart and more than a hint of rhubarb. Mouthfeel is rather coarse and quite carbonated, like seltzer water. Very spicy and hot with alcohol. Hops give a long bitter finish. Grapefruit peel bitterness, green apple sour, and tannic acid like old tea.

Sharp and a little harsh. The emperor was giving out lashes. I wonder if this is somewhat on the old side. Was age-dating beer just a passing fad?

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a reddish color and a thick, cloud consistency. Some floaties. There was an inch and a half of foamy, long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A sharp aroma of malt, hops, caramel, and a little citrus.

T: Tasted of caramel, a good deal of malt, and some hops. Alcohol is somewhat noticeable. If there's a real weakness in the flavor it's that there's a grassy quality in the finish. It's not very appealing. On the whole, a solid flavor.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.

D: A drinkable beer that packs a bigger punch than you might expect.

Coronado Red Devil pours with a red colour and a head that starts about 5 mm tall and fades to decent lacing. The smell is malty and sweet with a hint of lemon and hops. The taste is very malty up front but develops some very subtle citrus charater in the middle. There is a small amount of bitterness and charcoal. Over time there was a less pleasant taste that built in mouth. This beer has an excellent foamy texture. I really like this beer that falls half-way between a red ale and a strong ale.

From draft to a pint glass. Very malty nose with notes of caramel. Pours red with a foamy head that dissipates quickly. Well balanced strong ale with notes of caramel, nut, light roast, with a strong hoppy (cascade?) finish. Somewhat chunky mouthfeel and elevated ABV makes this a sipper.

A- Deep red going towards light brown; 2 finger off white head with a lot of lacing

S- Big malt smell; caramel and roastiness

T- The front you get some hops and bitterness then the malt backbone comes in with sweet, caramel, fruit, and some spice. Finishes with porter like roastiness and chocolate.

M- Very smooth but still full bodied

D- For 9% abv this is really really smooth, you wouldn't think it was that high at all. I could drink a couple bottles of this with no problem. With such a complex taste I can't believe how easy it is to drink.

Appearance: Hazy and brownish red in color, with a half of an inch of head.

Smell: Sweet smelling with some hops and malt coming through.

Taste & Mouthfeel: The hop and malt are very prevalent in this beer. Has a caramel flavor along with heat from the alcohol. Has a chewy texture, with a mouth numbing quality in the aftertaste.

Drinkability: Nice American Strong Ale. I probably could only do one of these and by one, I mean half a bottle. The 10.00% abv should be respected, and with this in mind, "one and done" is the motto for me.

So, things are gonna get crazy here at SG headquarters - gotta work from today and every day through April 18th (except for March 27th, as that's the Rotting Christ/Melechesh show in SF)...So, in deference to the end of my life for about 7 weeks, these reviews are gonna get craaazzziiiieeee...

Pours a dense, ruby red mahogany-ish....Beautiful, creamy tad head tops this off. I think I used a Laura Prepon analogy once already, but she is so awesome, I have to use her nicely filled out physique here, because this beer is like that, but maybe even nicer looking?? OK, maybe not...But this beer still looks great...well carbonated and sticky lacing from the persistent head....Awesome so far...

I'm thinking Donna from "That '70s Show" could have totally had a better guy than Eric...He was a gangly dweeb. Hell, Hyde was cooler...in any event this beer smells like....wait for it...wait for it...I can't really make it out...I get sweet caramel malt. I get some nice West Coast style hoppiness. Not much else...Maybe a touch of pear in there. Muted aromas...

Flavor is huge as one might expect from an Imperial anything, but these are painfully well-balanced flavors. What starts out as a hop-si-cade turns into a nicely fleshed out ale. Kind of like Laura's backside...Well, without the ale in it, of course. Don't know what a Hop-si-cade is? If you do, write it down on a piece of paper, crumple it up, and throw it away...you'll be gald you did...Then you can tell us all what a Sampo is...

Back to the beer, or was it "That '70s Show"? Who here thinks Mila Kunis is hotter than Laura? Not me, that's for certain....OK, maybe in Black Swan, but I still gotta pick Prepon...

Back to the beer...Once the hop burst mellows, the malt takes center stage (or is that stage left?). This is really a pleasant ale. In fact, I love it and want to marry it...OK, I can't do that I'm being told...

$6.99/bomber is a hefty price to pay for this delectible and luscious brew, but at 10% ABV it's a nice hefty beer, too. I say find and drink, and if you also find Laura P, send her a message for me: "SG says hey and wants you to move to the swamp with him"...thanks folks, I'm here all week...

What I like most: The delicious, well-balanced and quirky flavor profile.

What I like least: The price and hard to find aroma profile.

Verdict: delicious and worth tracking down.

Poured into an imperial pint from a 22 oz. Bomber

A - Beautiful carmel/red, tan, creamy, persistent head, considerable lacing

S - Nice toasted malt and citrus hop notes.

T - Apricot and peach, sweet malt and butterscotch

M - Good mouthfeel, light carbonation, medium body

D - I wasn't immediately impressed by this strong ale, but it grew on me. It's very drinkable and at 10%ABV it doesn't taste overly boozey.

strength. Undersatated in all aspects, that's its Bottle from Half Pints. Hits the spot for the style, hoppy aromas, amberish tinge body with white head, malty, toasty malty. Satisfying very drinkable. Above average mouthfeel. Not necessarily my favorite style, but a good job for it.

22oz bomber. Pours a deep dark red, almost purple color with a big frothy head. Tons of lacing. Aroma is sweet and boozey, with some caramel aromas and malts as well as dark fruits. Taste is boozey and malty. Not as sweet as the aroma and actually a bit bitter. Tastes of some dark fruits along with more malt. This beer is too alcoholic to be considered all that drinkable. Overall this is basically an average Strong Ale.
