A: Pours a clear light orange color. Good sized head with slight lace
S: Caramel/toffee sweetness, earthy hop scent
T: Sweet toffee like flavor up front with herbaceous/earthy aftertaste.
M: Medium bodied beer, good amount of carbonation
O: Interesting IPA, not a typical NW style IPA but I liked it, would get this again.

22oz bottle from Roth’s Sunnyslope Market in S.Salem. $4.99 Typical IPA in looks, bronzy-orange ale with a dirty white head. A very "beery" aroma..malty but with bustling floral and citric hoppiness. Quite balanced to begin with with caramel malts adding heft..then as it progresses over the tongue a huge earthy, hop bitterness takes over..trails off to a lingering pleasing after taste. Nice mouthfeel complex. Nice IPA stands out a wee bit from the Oregon IPA crowd.

A: Poured an extremely vigorous burnt orange color with overwhelming carbonation and a huge frothy white head, loads of lacing but half the beer was a gusher..not a good sign
S: Oh boy. Band aids and plastic topped with floral cand citrus hops
T: Horrid. This beer has an evident early infection which has a gassy, bubbly feel and a burnt plastic and medicinal band aid quality to it. Finsh is bitter and harsh.
M: Light bodied, awful and I dont know what else to say...bad?
O: Avoid. My first Burnside beer and I have been anxious to try them. I won't go back anytime soon.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery orange amber. Fine white one finger head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of bready malt and light fruit, only a hint of hops; not much going on here. Flavor is robust bready malt and stone fruit with an unusual very citrus component that slowly develops into a somewhat complex citrus and pine hops middle and finish, with lingering hops bitterness. This is not an intense hops-in-your-face start that I'm used to from NW IPAs. I'm a fan of malty IPAs and although I found this one a bit tame at first, I grew to like it quite a bit as I drank. The mouth feel is quite nice, heavy bodied and creamy. An unusual take on an IPA that I think is a winner. I'm definitely going to try the oatmeal pale ale that has arrived on the local market too.

Thanks to MADhombrewer for sending this along in a recent box. Our Red Sox are off to another awful start, but we remain hopeful.
Fluffy 2 fingers of white head top a bright light copper/gold colored beer. Spider web glass lines the inside of the glass.
Aroma is slightly sweet and doughy with some citrus at the finish. Some lemon and a hint of toasted grain.
Not quite as doughy in the flavor as the aroma. A rather hearty malt backbone here with bracing grapefruit pith at mid palate. Some green notes come in towards the end and meld with sweetness and it finishes quite bitterly.
Oily on your tongue.
I can’t/won’t pretend that I didn’t see the average score of 78 when I received the bottle, but this is quite a bit better than I envision a beer that would average a score like that. Wonder if there was a bad batch that impacted some of those other reviews. I’m not saying it’s a Sculpin, but it’s a decent little IPA. I haven’t read any of the reviews as I type this, but I will to see why others scored this so low. Interesting.

Bottle into tulip glass.
A: Clear, dark golden / light copper. Big head with good retention (and lacing, if you're into that). Darker than most IPA's, I'd say.
S: Malts and Northwestern hops, honey.
T: Pine, citrus. Malt is just there for balance - I don't detect any excessive sweetness or bready flavors. Lots of bitterness in the aftertaste.
M: Medium body. Nothing surprising here. Balanced.
O: Not bad. Based on the smell, I thought it would be a heavier, maltier IPA. Instead, it's an interesting and well-mannered one. Though I'm giving the smell a lower rating than the other components, it complements the taste in a lovely fashion, with the grains and honey from the smell providing an additional dimension to the "plain" but balanced bitter taste.

A - Golden, two finger white head, quickly disappeared, extremely cloudy
S - Heavy raw grain musk masks more subtle aromas, slight barnyard funk, hint of citrus but no appreciable hop aroma
T - Sweet up front, followed by strong biscuity grain flavor, overwhelming tannins on swallow, lingering harsh unpleasant bitterness and rotten mash flavors
O - An extremely poor example of a NW IPA. I believe that this was a combination of over/hot sparging and a wild yeast infection. All in all this was not a pleasant experience. Two sips and the rest went down the drain.

22oz bomber on 1-5-12
A - A cloudy, medium orange with a few white bubbles. Not much of a head at all.
S - Oranges and very bready. Malts dominate here.
T - Bready malts, some slight citrus. I wish there was more going on here.
D - Lower carbonation and an average medium body.
O - Pretty bland and malty. I was dissappointed with this one.

Appearance: (3.5)
- Pours a nice light copper yellow with a slight bit of haze and dusty sediment in the brew. There wasn't much of a head to speak of, but there is a nice small ring and a light dusting above the brew.
Smell: (3.0)
- Nice light bready grain with a slight sweetness, some grassy and citrus hops. Some bitter earthiness and a slight vegetative aroma. There is just a very faint buttery diacetyl in the background. Not much though at all.
Taste: (3.5)
- Quite the grainy and bready malt profile with a nice bitterness. Grassy pine bitterness with a floral and somewhat citrus-like hop finish. Overall it is pretty good, and I think its bitterness is the highlight.
Mouth Feel: (4.0)
- This is a nice chewy bitter IPA. It is smooth, light to medium bodied, and well carbonated for a good drink. Nice lasting bitterness and dryness from the early boil hops.
Overall: (3.5)
- This beer is solid for the most part. The malt flavors are not up there for me though. Just a bit too much husky barley gym sock going on. The hops certainly make up a little for it though. I wish most IPA's were this bitter. I believe the 84 IBU assessment. I'd snag this on tap while at the pub, but most likely won't be buying bottles of it.
