16oz glass at the Underground. A chocolate stout made with 'pounds and pounds' of habanero peppers, apparently, and not the sort served with marshmallows.
This beer appears a solid black, with prominent basal red cola highlights, and one finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and mildly bubbly beige head, which leaves some eroding limestone cliff lace around the glass as things slowly dissolve.
It smells of chalky medium cocoa powder, cafe-au-lait, faint muddled green chilies, a hint of root beer syrup, and tame earthy, weedy hops. The taste is grainy caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, neutered spicy green vegetal heat, day-old coffee, and pithy leafy, weedy hops.
The bubbles are pretty understated, barely a pip or tic perceptible, the body an adequate middleweight, and more or less smooth, given the threat implied here. It finishes off-dry, the clammy chocolate dueling with a sadly fading green veggie tingling.
I can't believe that I'm saying this, but I vastly preferred Rogue's recent Sriracha stout to this effort. The promise certainly doesn't deliver here, even if it is approachable overall.
