Notes:
In honor of Officer Mathias Degan, the first of 8 of Chicago's Finest to lose their lives in the line of duty during the Haymarket Affair. Copious amounts of Citra Hops deliver wonderful citrus and mango notes. At 10% ABV, we feel Mathias is a proper representation of the strength and courage of our Boys in Blue. Raise one to thank the fine Officers of the Chicago Police Department for their sacrifice.

Had on tap at haymarket. Pours a dark orange color with a foamy head.
Big and bursting aromas of grapefruit, navel oranges, fresh picked citrus, papaya and hop aromas. Deep and very complex.
Full bodied with a very smooth feel. Rich with really good flavors of navel oranges, grapefruit, hops, and papaya.
This was damn good. It has never failed to impress and is a really good imperial ipa.

A: Deep amber colored. About the color of cognac or an aged rum. Forms a rather smallish white head that reduces to absolute nothingness. No lacing what-so-ever.
S: Aroma is very pleasant. Candied orange dominates. Sweet. Citrus, particularly orange, with notes of tropical fruit and melon. Alcohol comes through as well, but its a nice balance to the sweetness.
T: Damn, this is a fine tasting beer. Taste is sweet, but the alcohol really balances the sweetness. More orange, with tropical fruit, kumquat, and a pine bitterness on the back end. Gets spicy and fusel after the swallow, but it just seems to cut the sweetness, so it works.
M: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation, though it doesn't seem to want to stick around for too long. Sweet, slick, and spicy. Moderate bitterness.
O: Got to admit, this is a very fine DIPA. On the sweeter side, which I typically don't like, but Citra just demands a sweeter base to play off of. However, unlike most Citra beers, the brewer uses the alcohol to his advantage, allowing the alcohol to cut the sweetness. A very well thought out beer.

Appearance-
A beautiful crimson with a small, but lasting, white head.
Smell-
Mango with a slight hop bitter.
Taste-
The citra hops really blast through here, a hint of the alcohol, slight bitter but mostly mango and bubblegum.
Mouthfeel-
The taste sticks with you and coats your mouth, but it isn't really a bad thing given the taste.
Overall-
Excellent entry for citra hops, probably the sweetest of the ones I have tried.

On-tap at Haymarket
A - Copper with a clean body with small, sticky white head.
S - Big nose filled with mango and passion fruit. I also picked up hints of grapefruit.
T - Loads of mango up front. Then, grapefruit and pine bitterness kicks in. Great balance between the two that makes it nice and balanced. Long pine bitterness lingers on in the finish as well as a slight alcoholic kick
MF - Heavy body with light carbonation. Slight stickiness. Rather clean finish with only slight hop resin remaining in the finish
O - Really great DIPA that never fails to impress. Great flavor and good balance between hoppy bitterness and citrus sweetness
