In a snifter this beer was black with a hint of red. It had a small tan head that left a tiny bit of lace.

Caramel and roasted malt aroma. Rather charred.

Taste was mostly of strong coffee/espresso. There was also a bit of caramel and vanilla. Mostly, however, it was the strong coffee that was dominant.

Nice enough beer.

Pours a deep black with a reddish hue and a big head to boot.

Roasted malt with nary a hint of vanilla in the nose. Pretty much matches the description on the label.

Mild roast with a touch of cocoa and vanilla. In other words, not much of those. Not much of anything actually.

Roasted malt makes up the mouthfeel. Nothing too exciting here.

Decent but for some reason, I expected more. They could consider using this recipe to make an imperial stout. It's solid and would work well. Good effort otherwise.

Light and small creamy head, very dark color almost black faint brown light coming through.

Nose chocolate lactose, light caramel :-/ cocoa, hint toasted aromas, but very little else.

Taste creamy lactose, chocolate milk, faint cocoa, hint if minty hops, bitter earthy hops, some roasted malt character. Finish its bitter dry earthy spicy hops, little mint again, cocoa, burnt roast.

Mouth is creamy med to lighter bod, decent carb

Overall ok but nothing special. Didn't have a lot going for it, fairly bland, not a lot of great stout characters either.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber, served in a goblet.

A- Pours close to black with a quickly dissipating half inch tan head and moderate lacing.

S- Smells a little smokey and roasty. A faint coffee and hoppy presence is also detectable on the nose.

T- A lot of sour coffee-like flavors accompanied bits of caramel and some bitterness. The starts of the sip seems promising, but the finish just doesn't follow through for me.

M- Medium to full-bodied brew with adequate carbonation.

O- Not my favorite stout I've had. Quite hoppy as far as stouts go. It just misses the mark for me.

A: Pours a near black color with a fingers worth of tan head that has some great retention and lacing

S: Big and roasty malts with a hint of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee

T: Follows the nose. Vey roasty to start, along with a strong hop presence, chocolate, vanilla and a big hit of astringency from coffee notes combined with the hops. Alcohol not present

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: This is one hoppy stout, no question about that. You'd think that this would be easy to drink at 7%, but the hops have something to say about that and make it more of a sipper. Some nice flavors going on underneath the hops make up for the astringency and make this a solid FES

We pop the top and pour a brew of dark brown, with nice ruby hues when held directly to light. It holds a one and a half finger head of eggnog colored bubbles, showing nice retention. The bubbles are cakey, leaving sticky sheets of lacing down the glass as they recede. Carbonation appears medium, and no haze or sediment is noted. The nose shows big notes of creamy vanilla and tinny metallics. Lactics come out, much like a sweet/milk stout, but the malts are charred and roasty to the bone. This gives dryness, and a light woody quality. With warmth the malts smell very much like a freshly pressed wafer ice cream cone, with light syrupy sweetness of red cherries. Our first impression is that the flavoring is predominated by alcohol and significantly soured grain on the back, but is sadly otherwise washed through. As we sip, medicinal phenols mix with the burnt-blackened coffee malts for a bitter start. There is a faint sweetness to the peak, with iced black coffee and hints at raw honey grittiness. The grains are chalky from the start, and retain that bite here. Those medicinals return, pulling us to the finish, which is marked by souring grain, bite of coffee and light chocolate malts, roast, soapy hops, savory and salty toffee sugariness, and general mineral water wash. The aftertaste breathes of fusel booze, blackened pepper, souring soapy hops, maraschino cherries sweetness, big char, and blackened raw coffee beans. The body is thin to medium, and the carbonation is medium. Each sip has nice slurp and froth off the top, but is significantly watered through to the feel, which dances lightly on the palate. The mouth is cooled initially, but thereafter dried with chalky astringency down the tongue. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks decently.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the char on the nose and in the aftertaste. The nose really warmed up by the end, giving a nice roasty quality to an otherwise strong base of aromatics. The flavoring, however, fell short. While there were notes here and there of what we wanted, the only part where flavor felt stark enough to wake you up was in the end and aftertaste. Otherwise the beer was relatively washed out and watery, and we found ourselves not wanting much more than one serving. We have certainly come to expect more from this prominent local brewery.
