Three Heads : Ontario Coast IPA
LOOK: Clear golden colored ale with a white short lived head and some spotty lacework on the pint.
SMELL: Hoppy, fruity aroma with citrus and apricot being predominant. Alittle bit of caramel and bread round it all out.
TASTE: Orangey citrus and herbal hops, a touch of floral influence. Clean honeyed, toffee and slight caramel malt character does the job of providing the body, with a small crackery yeast note. Bitterness is mild but hop flavor is well pronounced. Just a small hint of alcohol, this beer drinks easy for its strength.
FEEL: Medium bodied , well carbonated, and easy drinking. The finish leaves behind a clean, sweet maltyness.
OVERALL: A nice IPA that shys away from aggressive bitterness. Good flavor and packs a punch. I can dig it but finishes a tad sweet for an IPA.

Pours a light blonde with a nice head into my glass. The description is intriguing and I genuinely missed the part about "monastic yeast".
Aroma is complex and overly ambitious. A beer that wants to unite both coasts and throw in belgian characterstics? The aroma is full of spicy yeast with a good mix of citrus and pine in the nose.
Very spicy and dominated by the pine end of things. It's actually a big odd flavorwise. "Doughy" in the middle but it's overpowered by alcohol.
Mouthfeel isn't too impressive either. Thin. Acidic.
I feel that this beer falls flat due to trying to be 3 different beers in one. The flavors clash too much for it to be enjoyable.

On draft at Hoptron Brewtique, Patchogue, NY.
Poured a slightly hazy brass hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.
The smell featured clean esters and a vibrant peppery hop.
The taste was likewise clean with flavors of fresh white pepper, sweet pale malt and an earthy active ester.
The mouthfeel was typical of the style.
Overall a very nicely crafted estery ale. Refreshing.

22 oz bottle, no date.
appears a hazy orange straw color. 1" thick rocky white head. good retention and lacing. juicey citrus aroma- grapefruit & orange. the same hop flavors dominate the taste. slightly sweet, but balanced enough. thin to medium body, medium to high carbonation.
overall - a good IPA, kind of a cross between and "east coast" and "west coast" IPA.

Appearance: pours a clear dark golden yellow color with a 3" head that slowly falls. Thick lacing develops.
Smell: yeast, spiciness, and loads of citrus are nice on the nose.
Taste: lemon zest, orange, yeast, pepper, and a mild earthy quality creates a nicely flavored beer. Bitterness is a bit floral and not overpowering.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Crisp from start to finish with some dryness late.
Overall: not a bad drinking Belgian IPA, but there is a bit of citrus overload as the bottle empties.

Grabbed a bomber at Brilbeck's for $6.50. I forgot for a minute that this was a Belgian IPA and my tongue was a bit confused. The beer poured a hazy gold with a huge white head. The flavor is dominated by Chouffe-like Belgian spice, but there's also a sweet peach ester hiding under the earthy lemon hops and yeast character. It's hoppy for a Belgian ale, but less hoppy than most American-made Belgian IPAs. Still, this has a lovely Belgian character with a little sweet and tropical fruit mixed is. The hops don't really appear until the citrus rind finish, but it's a great way to close out a tasty Belgian style ale. It touches on the IPA, tripel (for the dry spice), and Belgian pale (for the fruit) styles, without completely fitting into any one. It doesn't matter though, this is a great beer worth trying.

A: Pours a medium gold hazy body with a pillowy white head. Retention is good leaving behind a nice thick & sticky lacing.
S: A nice citrus & grassy hop aroma balanced with Belgian yeast & spicy notes and a sweet malty backbone.
T: Not what I expected, but still very good. Upfront flavors include a lot of citrus and lemon zest, but have a spicy, white pepper, quality to it. The yeast is an interesting one and getting different complex flavors from it. Also picking up a lot of wheat and a sweet malty backbone. Finishes slightly bitter.
M: Medium carbonation; medium to light body; almost creamy texture.
O: This is not your typical Belgian IPA, but almost like a "white" ipa. A lot of interesting and complex characteristics that I think works for this brew. Try it for sure, but don't rate it base on the "Belgian IPA" style. Have an open mind. I would definitely get again, pricing isn't too bad.

Nice to see more offerings from this company at the local store in central upstate NY. The Kind IPA is outstanding so I'm interested to see how this stacks up. The only other offering I have had from Three Heads was the Skunk Black IPA which was surprisingly mediocre after sampling The Kind. label on the Ontario Coast describes it as a blend between East and West Coast styles of IPA, yet it is categorized as a Belgian IPA on here, interesting.
A - Just a monstrous off white head on this one after what was a decent pour. The head foam is real thick with some super sticky lacing, the thing won't even budge when I move the glass around. The beer itself is very hazy and bright yellow gold in color.
S - Definitely picking up some Belgian yeast and a real sweet aroma. Some dry earthy hops in there but the yeast dominates making this smell more like a Belgian golden ale than an IPA from either coast.
T - There's the hops. Initially some dry earthy hops but then followed by some citrus/grapefruit hops. Definitely has the hop profile of both coast's style of IPA. The Belgian yeast taste here is really subtle and well done, it just dominates the aroma. There is a nice almost candy like finish with moderate dryness and some booze. There is also a nice hint of tropical fruit in the middle. I would have liked more hop flavor, everything is well balanced but reminds me more of a pale ale than an IPA.
M - Slick and sticky on the lips and slightly flat. It seems most of the carbonation exploded into the monster head instead of staying in the beer.
O - Overall, a tasty Belgian style pale ale from Three Heads. The hop flavor could almost be doubled here but it's very flavorful and well balanced. Definitely an improvement over the disappointing Skunk Black but not nearly as special as The Kind IPA. Still, they had even more offerings at the local store so I will keep sampling brews from these guys.
