I had a sampler of this one and quite enjoyed it. Medium brown in appearance with a caramel chocolate smell to it. This was a very easy drinker. Taste was pretty much in line with the smell, with a slight bit of nut thrown in. Not spectacular, but certainly a good brown ale. I didn't find much hops in there, but that may be because I had just tried their imperial red seasonal that was very hoppy.

poured from the growler into a pint glass.

A - Pours a slightly transparent deep amber-brown with nice amber highlights. A few bubbles meander here and there to the dense, creamy, two-finger tan head. Head struggles, but manages to stay intact all the way down the glass. Leaves behind a nice web of lacing on the upper two-thirds of the glass.

S - Decent nose of chocolate and crystal malt with a fair amount of earthy hops upon opening the growler. Not as strong in the glass.

T - Malty upfront with a hint of yeast. The body has is milk chocolaty with fresh and light earthy hops to provide balance and interest. Smooth, freshly made milk chocolate finish.

M - Medium bodied but delightfully creamy moderate carbonation. Excellent.

After touring the brewery and sampling the dozen beers currently on tap, this is what I decided to take home with me. This is one of the best brown ales I've had to date: nice and chocolaty with enough hop backbone to satisfy my inner hop head. However, it is the incredibly creamy and smooth mouthfeel, which helps make this beer seem exceptionally fresh, that raises it above the rest. A terrific session beer that warrants more growler refills.

Appearance - Light brown head with clear dark brown body. Low retention. Decent lacing.

Smell - Coffee. Oaky. A bit of caramel. Roasted.

Taste - Light. Cofee and water. A bit of hop bitterness. Nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel- Very smooth. Slightly creamy and very frothy body. Almost no astringency. Well done. Light bodied, almost watery.

Overall Drinkability - Probably the best brown ale I've had.

Poured on-tap at Chama River Brewing Co, the beer was served in a pint glass. The beer is a very clear, light auburn-brown coloring, with a thin film of off-white head. Heavy nut and molasses on the nose. Hazelnut and coffee tastes balance together very well, and are robust but refrain from being overpowering. There is a really good roasted flavor on the aftertaste, with a lot of smokey characteristics. Very smooth finish makes this a very pleasant drinker.

Reviewed from notes. On tap at the brewpub in August 2009.

Pours a moderate brown color. Light tan head with a single finger of foam. Not too much lacing, but a few spots here and there. Nose is some light chocolate and caramel and a bit of hops. Taste is light malt and hops. Medium body with some nice bitterness. Drinks well and is a pretty good combination of ingredients.

Served in a pint glass a clear, reddish hue with a thin layer of tan foam. Not much lacing here and retention is about average.

Nose is nutty and caramel with a definite hop bite. Smells pretty good, if a bit faint. A bit of toast makes an appearance, very clean and fresh smelling beer.

Taste is more akin to an amber ale with the toasty malt and lighter body. Significant hop bite, I am glad to see that Chama River likes the lupulin and uses them well in most of their beers. There is a nice nutty aspect that goes a long way for the brew. It is certainly off-style for a brown ale but Is fairly tasty nonetheless, easy and enjoyable to drink.

A_dark chestnut brown with a coffee coloured cap. Nice lacing

S_mild aroma. Slightly malty and slightly nutty

T_sweet rich malt up front. Nice hazlenut like flavours going on with hints of cacao and coffee. Nicely rich without being cloying

M_medium bodied with perhaps a little too much co2 for my liking of a brown

D_another good call from Chama. This is a very drinkable brown with a great "nut" character.
