Served on-tap at Pilsener Haus in Hoboken, NJ
A: Pours a hazy golden orange in color with some moderate golden yellow highlights and heavy amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of wheat with moderate to strong aromas of lemon citrus and clove along with just a touch of black pepper. Maybe a hint of vanilla.
T: Upfront there are some light to moderate flavors of wheat malts with moderate amounts of lemon citrus. Strong flavors of banana and clove along with just a touch of pepper spice. Slightly sweet with almost no bitterness.
M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin for the style.
O: Deviates a little from the traditional smells and tastes of a hefeweizen but it seems to be a little more of a regional speciality - I enjoyed the additional hints of vanilla and peppery spice. Easy to drink and sessionable.

Poured a 330ml bottle into a Samuel Adams glass
A- poured a deep, cloudy orangey-gold. Big foamy white head lasts for a long time but doesn't leave lacing on the glass
S- yeast, fruity esters, orange, grain
T- much less distinct than it's smell would lead you to believe. Tastes like grain, like the samples they hand out at breweries to show you what their grain tastes like. Very little else came through. No citrus, no yeast, no spice. Just...grain.
M- nice and full, with just a hint of carbonation
O- everything about this beer is great but the taste. The taste just doesn't fit in the with the rest of the beer's profile. Maybe I just got an off bottle (although nothing tastes off about it. Just under-developed) or I've got it too cold. But nothing about the aroma came through in the taste and that's kinda weird.

Bottle poured into a Wiezen glass
Full pour created a thick off white cap which slowly settled down with light lacings on the glass. Faint carbonation with an opaque reddish copper golden hue.
Faint smell of a traditional wheat beer. I would have liked more aroma.
Light mouthful with a light flavoring. Would have liked more flavor but this would be a refreshing beer or two after cutting a summer lawn. Subtle wheat beer taste. No aftertaste.
Good beer for a hot summer afternoon. Would have liked a more dynamic, aggressive flavor and aroma .

a very underwhelming hefe, pouring a curious clearish copper color with a short but thick off white head. the nose lacks that banana clove complex, and stale german malts is all I really smell. not even wheat malt, but sweeter and heavier caramels. the flavor isn't bad, sort of fruity, not as yeast forward as I like my hefeweizens to be, but still the yeast is probably the most observable flavor element. the mouthfeel ruins this beer entirely. it had very little carbonation, and the curious sweeter malt choice gets heavy as a result. there is no spice or banana to fall back on, and this one sort of dies on the palate. I had much higher hopes for this, but it was sitting right next to the weihenstephaner in the cooler for the exact same price, so no worries on finding a good affordable hefe. this one just didn't cut it for me, although im sure itd be different on tap at the source. maybe the freshness monster got the best of this one...

On tap at The Bavarian Lodge - Lisle, IL
Pours a hazy, deep golden color with a tall, off-white head that holds excellent retention and leaves tons of lacing as it fades. Typical hefeweizen aromas of banana, clove, wheat, bready hefe yeast. Tastes are a nice balance of spicy clove, banana, wheat, yeast, and a touch of citrus. Full body, maybe a tad too full, but its still refreshing. Excellent German Hefeweizen as expected.

Benedikteiner Weissbier
16.9 oz. bottle, dated "03.01.13 A26A536"
$4.00 @ The Beer Shoppe, Ardmore, PA
Benedikteiner is a slightly interesting Bavarian weissbier from Ettal, a small town to the southwest of Munich. It's fairly basic as far as hefeweizens go, but it's also slightly different in some ways. The yeast component is mild: soft banana is present, accented by a bit of vanilla, and there's a light touch of bubblegum or soft clove as well. Some fruitiness? Ah, yes, there's a touch, mainly apple and very delicate lemon. There may even be a hint of a plastic phenol underneath, but that doesn't really show up even in the burp so let's just leave it there and call it another nuance of complexity. There's an interesting component to the malt, unless that's just oxidation I'm picking up, but for some reason though, I kind of remember that maltiness being a prominent feature in their other beers. It's lightly caramelish, and bready as well as wheaty. Some peppery spiciness appears in the finish along with a bit of herbal and grassy character, and I'm not sure if the spice is coming from the yeast or the hops. Overall it's pleasant, and if you like hefeweizens you can't really fault it. Worth trying.

Super bargain found today, at $20 for a case of 20 500ml bottles.
Nothing particularly special about this beer, as it's a fairly average example of the style, except the really attractive appearance. Nice fluffy, four-finger head in a big Hefeweizen glass produced from a proper three-stage pour (last stage is the swirl), Pretty crisp biscuity and malty smell, with minimal esters. Taste is about the same -- not enough banana here. Indeed, flavor profile is a bit flaccid. Decent enough mouthfeel (consistent with the fully-lasting head), and average finish.
Overall, relatively pedestrian, but at the price, I like it enough. Sure wish I could return to the place of origin!
