Pours a hazy/cloudy dark amber color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, alcohol, roasted malt, hops, caramel malt, and a hint of dark citrus. Fits the style of an American Barleywine. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of alcohol, sweet malt, roasted malt, slight dark citrus, and a hint of caramel malt. Overall, good appearance, aroma, and complexity, but slightly weak body.

Appearance is tawny with minimal clarity and almost no head. Some lacing exists. Smells is straight up grain with a heavy leaning towards the sweet side of things. Molasses, grapes, and grain. Taste is more of the sweet malts with some hops to balance things out. Finish is not super sweet, definite notes of maple and grapes. Mouthfeel is moderate with mild carbonation. Overall, this is a sweet barleywine that could use some more hops.

[A] Served a dark burgundy brown color with a finger high sandstone colored cap. Creamy texture. Well retained and while receding, a complete wall of thick foam coats the glass. When backlit, the body glows a russet-orange hue. Semi opaque. Well-above average lacing.

[S] Ripe with dates, rich with caramelized figs. Honey, heavily rendered caramel, brown sugar and butterscotch.

[T] The same dark fruit characteristic mentioned above are everlasting on the palate. The flavor finishes with a more earthy, tobacco-laden, tea leaf-life quality.

[M] The body is full, thick, chewy and everything a 10.3% barleywine should be. Carbonation is a bit above average for the style, showing its strength on the latter half of the sip. This promotes a relatively clean finish, although a sticky resinous coating remains.

[O] I'm surprised to see that this beer is a collaboration with Westbrook. But stoked! Not being the biggest Evil Twin fan, I ordered this on the strength of Westbrook's name alone. Overall, I was impressed but not blown away.

Had this on tap. Surprisingly available in Iowa for such a unique brewery.

Pours a cloudy if not muddy brown with light tan head. Good lacing.

Nose is hops and spicy.

Taste is hops(of course) but earthy and spicy. This is a nice twist for the crowded field. Malt is also balancing the drink. I didn't notice a lot of fruit in this one.

Mouth feel is really nice; creamy yet carbonated. Overall, this is a great barleywine and a unique one at that.

On-tap at Bruery Provisions

Pours a murky amber color with a small white head. Nose is lightly fruity, but quite heavy on the toffee and toasted malt. A bit of caramel and brown sugar along with some pine hop notes and a bit of perfume. The flavor has an almost woody note to it. Heavy on the pine hops with a moderate bitterness. Lots of toffee, a bit of toast, and some brown sugar. A bit of booze and perfume, too.

Served on tap into a tulip

A - Deep amber brown. Nice carbonation with the lacing disappearing quickly.

S - Molasses up front. Toffee, raisins, caramel. Some floral, piney and resinous notes coming from the hops.

T - Strong, really strong. Definitely feel the warming alcohol right away. There are rich toffee notes with some dark plum flavors and a heavy piney bitterness. Sports a big carbonation kick which is nice due to the fact it would overbearingly coat your palate with the heavy resinous oils.

M - Carbonation really does a great job here scrubbing the palate. Slightly syrupy and resiny. Thick finish with a long lingering bitterness that leaves the mouth dry.

O - A nice barley wine. It's ridiculously strong and warming.
Great for sipping on a cold evening. I had to end my tastings for the day here but, sometimes that's a good thing. Will definitely seek out again.

On-tap at Beer Street, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is brownish amber in color. It poured with a thin beige head that consistently covered the surface and left thick lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are aromas of caramel malts and toffee in the nose along with some hints of citrusy hops.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of caramel and toffee. A light amount of bitterness is present, which lingers through the finish.
M: It feels full-bodied and a bit sticky on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some warming from the alcohol.
O: This is a good sipping beer for a cold winter night.

Poured a reddish borwn with decent head on top of a slightly boozy, sweet and sugary malt (along wiith touch of figs) and some breadiness; hopping minimal. This is a hearty, filling beer with some slight stickiness. Malt heavy, there is some caramel and sugary sweetness, tad syrupy, and (almost) evenly balanced with a touch of citrusy hops and alcohol. Unfortunately, the alcohol bleeds through, not only for a slightly too strong backbite but overall just kind of muddles the beer. Enjoyable sipper but not a great beer.

I had this on-tap at Max's. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours a red/dark amber color with a layer of off white head that leaves nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Malt sweetness with some fruit and berry notes along with a boozy bitterness.

Taste: Oh no! This isn't very good at all. Berries with a strong bitterness. Some malt and some booze. This one is a bit of a mess.

Mouthfeel: The body is syrupy with foamy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This wasn't a very good barleywine at all. I wouldn't want to have another.

On tap at churchkey. Poured into snifter. Honey amber...no head but really nice sticky lacing.
Smells of syrup and sweet honey malts. A bit of brown sugar malts.
Taste is of sweet but bitter malts. Sugary honey backbone with amber tendancies. Very boozey but balances nice with the malts.
Very nice, drinkable, and full of sweet flavor. Nice brew to call it a night.

Evil Twin Freudian Slip: American style barleywine.  On tap at Novare Res 2/4/12 into a 12 oz snifter.

A: reddish brown good clarity. One finger of off white head, great lacing.

N: brown sugar, maple syrup, and dark fruit.

T: pretty sweet, maple syrup and brown sugar, burnt caramel, plumb, roastiness and some hopiness in there as well.

M: smooth, minimal alcohol heat, good carbonation.

O: very good, a bit sweet but well balanced, a good barleywine... Would recommend.

Poured out a ruddy brown color with small off white head approaching beige.

Alcohol the most noticeable aroma, a cigarette ashtray comes across as well.

Ooof, tons of alcohol noticeable on the palate. It really is the dominant aspect of the beer.
A little bit of a thicker, more syrupy mouthfeel, but it still isn't getting me to a point where I like much of this beer. Alcohol dominates any hops or malt flavors. Caramel, raisins, prunes, rubbing alcohol. Pretty bitter, but can't discern if that is from the hops or something else.

Thanks to Reno Dave for bringing this bottle to the Reno bottleshare. No thanks to Dave Hurley of the El Dorado casino (sports bar suit guy) for renigging on their word allowing our bottle share so they could purportedly keep the BMC distributor happy.

This one is a pass for me, glad I got to try it without buying. Would not recommend.

Poured into a snifter glass. The beer pours dark toffee brown with a thick, light brown head that retreats slowly. I can see some bubbles rising along the side of the glass. Plenty of lacing is left along the side of the glass. The aroma of the beer is sweet and bready with a touch of woodiness, dark fruits, and some booze. The taste follows the nose. It's mildly sweet with a nice bready malt backbone. I get the dark fruit flavors and some of the alcohol in the flavor. I also get some of those woody notes with some back end bitterness to provide some balance. The body is medium to full with moderate carbonation. The finish is slightly dry and the alcohol warms in the back of the throat. This is an excellent beer, but just so.

Alright so I'm not all for this style with style and smell..bla bla..bla..

Was this a good beer? Should you try it?

The taste is off putting -- I've been to GABF and dozens of other beer festivals and with that... this reminds me of one of those special kegs that the local breweries bring out to prove that they are indeed awesome after all and everyone flocks for(half hour wait WHEEE!!)

It's high octane and robust, in no way does this beer suck..but at some point it's like as my good friend Eric says "WOW!". Yea, wow indeed...flavors are smokey, sweet and molasses all at once..it's sort of like a burn chocolate chip cookie with alcohol pored all over it. To be honest it's not a horrible experience but it's one I don't think I will ever want to try again.

Can someone help me finish this bottle actually?

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass.

A- Pours a super murky brown color with a 1/4 inch tan head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Somewhat resilient lacing with a trail of spots.

S- Huge caramel aroma with some hops and alcohol in the back. Raisin, fig and grass notes. There's also some pungent, earthy funk.

T- Astringent booze and bitterness at first. Upon second sip, more complexity is derived with an increase of the caramel/brown sugar sweetness fighting its way through the hops and alcohol. Still, it's very bitter in a deep, earthy way. As the two ends of the scale vie for position, I begin wondering if I should have let this bottle go a while longer...although some interesting rum-like characteristics come out of the beer as it warms.

M- Very sharp, bitey and dry from the hops and booze sting. Medium combination and a thick, sticky body. My least favorite part of the beer.

O- Decent, but not really worth a second go. Way too hot and two-dimensional.

The label says it was brewed and bottled at Westbrook Brewing in Mount Pleasant, SC

A: The small tan head sits atop a murky, reddish-brown beer. Head retention is low, and a good lace sticks on the glass.

S: Aromas of tropical hops come first, followed by malt sweetness, then finally dark rich fruits like dates and figs.

T: The taste features sharp hop notes, but the bitterness is matched well by a big dose of malt. Hops are citrus and tropical fruits, and the malts have caramel sweet tones. Great balance here

M: Moderately carbonated, with a full body and strong warming from the alcohol. The finish is much like the taste, a good balance of strong hops and lots of malt.

O: Big and bold hops and malts, just like a barleywine should be. Pretty strong in the alcohol heat though. Recommended you try this if you're a fan of the style.

A - Dark brown-copper with a finger of frothy off-white head. Fades normal.

D - Nice hoppy American Barleywine. Great hop profile and bitterness and good overall bitterness.

Bottle to glass

A- deep murky orangish amber, looks like the color of real natural honey, not the light colored processed stuff.

S- caramel grains and light biscuity pale grains with a punch of in your face hopiness. Dank earthy tobacco.

T- hops. Caramel malt good combo. Sweet tobacco, some resin, earthy grass. Alcohol peeks in quickly and then is dominated by a sweet hoppy finish.

M- a bit. Thin for this style but, perfect to my liking.

O- Overall this is an incredible double ipa. I expect a bit more heat from alcohol in a barley wine. That said it is simply fantastic. Hop heads delight!

Cask offering via the beer engine @ the Trapp Door, emmaus. The brew pours a mahogany to cooper color. Fairly clear with rich finger off frothy tan head that sits atop with wonderful retaining powers considering the strength of the brew and delivery.

The smell is fruity like apples and something deeper, maybe currant. A hint of pears is also present but maybe more inline with the scent of the earthy skin moreso than the ripe fruit itself. There is a bit of mineral inclusion as well that blends into the scent of alcohol as it warms.

The taste is strong with a very forward flavor of green apple skins and pears. Toffee to caramel malt sweetness comes into play with some burnt sugary flavors before a big boozy impact. Just like the aroma hinted, there is a mineral quality through this that mixes with a young green yeast aspect that keeps this from being "clean."

It is a medium bodied brew for the style on the edge of light with a bit watery feel exaggerated by the light carbonation. It is enjoyable in limited amounts. The nose is the standout feature of this brew. I am usually a big fan of cask beer but I think this experience was possibly degraded a bit by it.

This poured out as a reddish brown color. There wasn't much of a head on top, just some scattered bubbles on top. The smell of the beer has some sweet malts on the nose as well as some hops. The aromas of caramel and dark fruits are in there too. The taste of the beer has a light amount of raisin flavor with a hoppy bitter finish. The mouthfeel of the beer is watery, it's drinkable but not overly complex. Overall this beer wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be. There are better Barley Wines out there.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark reddish brown amber with a nice one finger tan head that had good retention and tons of lacing. Looks good. Aroma of caramel malt and light citrus and pine hops. Flavor has sweet malt and dark fruit to start, slowly changing to a malty, nicely hopped finish and a lingering, slightly boozy pine and citrus hop aftertaste. Moderately complex and a very nice flavor progression. Medium to heavy bodied with moderate creaminess. The high ABV and hops make a bit of an astringent finish, but overall I enjoyed this well made American style barleywine. If I can find a reasonably priced second bottle, I would age one for a few years to calm the booziness.

22oz bottle.

Pours a completely opaque orange with a small creamy head that doesn't hang around long. Some wispy bubbles linger on top.

Aroma has lots of caramelized sugar and citrus hops. Some caramel, vanilla and toffee.

Taste is hoppy up front with some pithy grapefruit and resinous pine. But the caramel malts and sugar backbone are still prominent.

Mouthfeel is stick sweet with some bitterness and alcohol heat n the finish. Soft carbonation. Actually gets pretty boozy after a few sips.

It's definitely a hot barleywine with a healthy dose of hops but it comes together really well. Another winner from Evil Twin, which has been impressing more than Mikkeller lately.

Bomber into a large tulip

A: dark brown, huge frothy light tan head, good retention, leaves an absurd amount of lacing

S: some dark fruits booze, sweet, nutty, like candied pecans

T: really nutty, booze, caramel malts, sweet and roasty

M/D: syrupy Mouthfeel, full bodied, carbonation pretty big for the style, drinkability very good with a well masked ABV

O: overall good not great, pretty one dimensional with the big nutty character. For the price, I probably wouldn't buy again,

Pours a murky brown with a tan slightly yellow head.

Smarties, slight brown sugar, hint of cardamom, big yeasty breadiness, some herbal spice.

Yeast and medicinal brown sugar fades into a toffee finish. More pleasant than it sounds. Some dark fruit that's overcome by long lingering notes of toffee, slightest brown coffee notes.

Mouthfeel is tingly from the carbonation/alcohol, some astringency in the finish. Full bodied, verging on chewy.

Overall this is a unique barleywine. Fan of the fact that the residual sweetness does not play the main part in this beer. Big big beer, slight astringency prevents it from being amazing.
