I had this beer poured on tap at Bier Abbey in Schnectady NY, poured into a tulip glass.

A: Reddish/Brown Hue, Passes Mild Light, Off White Head, Decent Lacing

S: Caramel, Black Bread, Mildly Piney

T: Piney, Bready, Mild Coffee, Mild Caramel

M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Drying, Mildly Bitter

Overall, a nice hoppy brown ale with a mild touch of sweetness, well balanced

Pours a dark mahogany/brown. Hazy. Not a whole lot of light getting through this guy. The head was about two fingers, beige in color and fell to a little under a finger. Chunky sip marks all the way down the glass.

The aroma is of lightly toasted toffee and sticky caramel with a hearty dose of pine resin and ruby red grapefruit. Some earthy notes.

Sticky toffee and caramel up front before a rush, and I mean a rush, of pine resin and grapefruit. The finish is dry and bitter with a lingering herbal spiciness.

Sticky, chewy body. Medium feel, but drinks heavier due to just how chewy this guy is.

There is a balance of huge, sweet, sticky malt with bitter, fruity hops. I typically like to see my hoppy ambers with a thinner/smoother malt bill but this one works in a unique way.

I was expecting a much different beer. Not the crisp hoppyness I enjoy normally. Lots of malt flavor reduce the true character of the hops. That said there is still a well rounded flavor that is different and kept me sipping through the whole bottle. Not a bad beer, but not in my personal style wheelhouse.

A - Cloudy amber-brown, finger of frothy tannish head. Fades fairly slowly.

S - Pine and grapefruit hops, sweet caramel malts, brown sugar, nuttiness, a touch of fruity yeast.

T - Grapefruit, pine, and grassy hops, some lightly resiny bitterness, sweet caramel and lightly bready malts, brown sugar.

M - Medium bodied moderate carbonation. Smooth, dry, bitter, sweet finish.

D - Nicely balanced. Good hoppy brown ale.

Into a nonic glass:

A: dark cloudy brown colored body leaving a foamy one finger tan/white head forms and slowly dies to a film coating the top of the pint. Beautiful sticky lacing clings very nicely around the sides of the nonic

S: hops up front very powerfully with some light caramel and nuts coming more so in as the beer warms. Some pears come in too as it warms

T: all of the previously mentioned flavors and adds a nice clean sweetness with a tinge of alcohol, but an acceptable amount for the strength of this beas

M: medium with a nice smooth creaminess surrounding the mouth and tongue. Since the ABV is fairly high for a brown, this is moderately drinkable

O: I like this and would come back to it. Though different for its style, its still good.

A: A very cloudy, medium copper. An average pour produces three fingers of thick, rocky foam. the head is long lasting and sticky.

S: A moderate citrus hops that is kind of flat quickly followed by a medicinal note that blends with a grassy dry hopped aroma. A bit of tropical fruit comes though in the hops aroma after it warms. There isn't much malt aroma what little is there smells of clean sweetness. There is light fruitiness and moderately-light alcohol aroma.

T: The moderately-strong tropical fruit hops flavor and strong hops bitterness are front and center on this beer although they are muted showing signs of age. The malt provides enough malt to support the hops and brings a light caramel flavor. There is a little bit of an herbaceous note and a light alcohol sweetness. The balance is fairly bitter and the aftertaste is of citrus hops and lingering bitterness. A slight bit of phenols come through in the flavor as well a slight vinegar flavor.

M: medium bodied with a moderately-strong carbonation. There is a light hops rerived astringency.

O: Well even after the flaws that could be from an infected bottle I might try and find a fresh bottle of this in the future because the underling beer is still pretty good.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet.

A: Opaque, ruddy amber. Light head, gentle lacing.

S: Doesn't smell like a brown ale. This one's full of astringent, citrusy hops.

T: Hrm, tasty! I think I like it. It's super-hoppy with touch of toasty malt. Actually, I don't really like it. The brown ale nuttiness and light sweetness of the malt conflict with the aggressive hopping. Aftertaste is murky-hoppy.

M: Great! Carbonated, smooth, and pleasant.

O: An interesting beer, but not a success. I didn't really enjoy it, and I would neither recommend it nor drink another.

A - Poured out a clear, dark, dark brown color with a one-finger, tan head of bubbly foam that left thin trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of chocolate, roasted malt and a touch of toffee.

T - Good chocolate flavor with a roasted malt backbone. There was a nice piney bitterness that added balance.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry, clean finish.

O - This is really tasty brown ale. Very enjoyable.

Bottle shared by Steve, 650ml into a tulip.

Burgundy brown, with a tan head. Light bubbles serve as retention - minimal lacing. Nose of toffee, caramel and a whole bunch of malt. Citrusy hops are peripheral, some dank pine character in the background as well. Taste has some toasty, almost lightly burnt malts, toffee/tootsie-like character and bitter citrus and pine in the back. Lighter body than the nose suggested (which is a relief), medium carbonation. A nice hoppy brown ale, light and relatively flavourful.

The taste was malty and a coffee bite, grassy hops, and a boozy note.

With the name like "Hop Flood", why should anyone expect anything other than a tidal wave of pungent, dripping, resinous hop to wash over the palate? Maybe it's because that doesn't happen! Instead, the chocolaty foreground of flavor begins the shape the impressions of a brown ale. But that's not to say that hops aren't a big part of the game.

Pouring a dark, bark brown color with complete opaqueness, Its high effervescence builds a serious rocky heat that caps the beer much like the meringue on chocolate pie. With retention and lace on bold display, the beer sells the notion of American brown ale as well as any can.

Charred woods, burnt oranges, cocoa nibs, heavy toast and campfire"ish" char are just a few of the strong aromatics that shape the beer's nose. Clean and concise, other grassy, hay-like aromas bring up the rear, and do so as the beer warms. Hiding beneath is the presence of malted milk that pulls all the sharper toasted elements together.

Dry toast and bittersweet chocolates coat the palate with a broad earthen flavor. But then the sprite hop aromas of freshly peeled oranges awaken the taste buds and offer a highly drinkable taste to the savory overtones. Synged flavors of grass, pine, and stems offer a toasty flavor that's bold but doesn't extend into char, roast, or smoke flavor. Though the cocoa flavors offer a savory taste to accompany the starchy milkshake-like maltiness, they instead provide a very dry taste of toast that turns woody and mid palate and then grassy to close. This procession coincides with its hoppy orange-like start turn pithy, turn cleanly bitter in the finish.

Creamy and medium bodied to start, but the beer quickly sheds its carbonated creaminess and starchy malt textures in favor of dry toast mouthfeel. Nearly powdery late, the beer's dryness is aided by the fleeting malt presence, rising hop resins, and warming alcohols. Though it dries out wonderfully, there's an aftertaste of toast, cocoa, and charred wood.

Delicious as it is, there's few on the market that celebrate such hop character atop a stern brown ale base. Hop flood fits into the conversation with Dogfish Head's India Brown Ale and 8 Wired Rewired.

A- pours a murky brown with a light tan head.

S- leafy herbal hops on the nose with a toasty bread malt character with notes of pecan like nuttiness. Chaulky yeast character on the finish with a noticeable alcohol.

T- toasty bready malt with more nut flavors. Aspriny and herbal hop flavors with a decent amount of bitterness. Astringent alcohol flavor with a chaulky yeast on the finish.

MF- dusty astringent mouthfeel with a medium body. Average carbonation.

Bomber with no apparent freshness dating. Pours a cola-like brown color in the body with a two-finger tan head. Good lacing.

The aroma is very light, with only a slight hint of pine hops and toasted malt.

The flavor is a mixed bag of pine resin hops with only a light amount of toasted and slightly caramel malt. The hop flavor dominates but it is very one-dimensional.

The mouthfeel is relatively thin. Not an IPA, not a brown ale, but a reasonable mix of the two. Not a repeater for me, but interesting enough for a try.

Bought at Beer Street in Williamsburg, BK.

A. Looks like brown/caramel mud. Thick in its opaqueness with sediment. Nice foamy tan head that leaves a good amount of lacing.

S. Fantastic malty dark fruit scent, with a hint of charcoal in the back.

T. Very flavorful. It has a bit of caramel and a bit of bitterness. Some fruitiness like a watermelon. Malty and thick, with mild carbonation. Has a coffee taste at the end.

M. The aftertaste is a bit off, a bit sour. But not enough to detract from the brew as a whole.

O. This is one of those interesting beers that changes as it rolls over the palate. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Pours a dark brown with a thick, full and rich light khaki head.

Nose is pure sweet dark chocolate with undertones of cherry and light pineapple. Really nice.

Mouthfeel is rich, full and bold and well balanced.

Flavor profile is a giant blast of bitter hop that goes to an assertive burnt toast and burnt chocolate that quiets down for a second and then goes to a big bitter pine/bitter lemon skin finish.

This is probably one of the best Evil Twin I've had. Big, big all around. I want this one with BBQ, grilled meats rich dishes. Nice.

Purchased as a recommendation from Scott at CBX. Poured into a Tulip Glass.

Pours a dark mahogany with a dense mocha head that fades to a craggy haze, leaving lots of soapy lacing. Intense hop aromas of pine resin, grapefruit, orange peel, and pineapple with a solidly sweet coffee and roasted nut malt backbone. More resinous hops with a nice caramel, amber, roasted nut, and chocolate malt profile. Very fresh, pungent hops. Balanced and delicious, right up there with Sublimely Self-Righteous. Smooth mouthfeel, a bit creamy, with a medium body and good carbonation. Overall an incredibly delicious Black/Brown IPA, this was a nice suggestion. Thanks Scott!

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, murky consistency. There was a small amount of foamy head that lasted a fair amount of time. Good lacing.

S: An interesting aroma of hops, malt, and the brown ale nuttiness.

T: Tasted of hops (a pretty large amount considering this is a brown ale), some malt, a little coffee, and the nuttiness. A different kind of flavor for the style, but it somehow works.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a super dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Definitely an unusual brown ale, but well made and drinkable.

Recent bottle from Lakeview Liquor, Chicago. A Danish style ale, also well hopped by American style citrus orange hops. Not too bitter, but the balance is leaning that way, with juicy orange ipa on the finish that contains some sweetness. Decent drinkability, but still overpriced. Cloudy. A tad above average mouthfeel.

Read that label carefully. In bold print is "Twelve Percent LLC", which immediately provokes the thought that this beer is 12% ABV. BUt that isn't the case; you see that's the importer's name. The ABV is listed is small white print, at 7%. Given the beer's name, I'm anticipating some hops. So, on to the beer:

A few chuncks of sediment are visible in this leather brown colored beer. The head is halfway between soapy and fluffy, retains well on top and leaves strings of lace around. Hoppy nose, check. Raw piney notes spring out, tiny tofee aromas appear. Basically a one dimensional aroma.

The hops are worked quite well. Pine, grapefruit, and resin flavors show that the Danes can do that famous American style justice. The one thing that I'm still missing is some brown ale. The brown ale component is minimal, it seems to be there for "filler" than for flavor. Now don't get me wrong, the overall flavor is quite appetizing, but it could be a little better. It's medium bodied, not difficult to drink, and leaves slightly bitter citrus in the aftertaste.

Reasonably good beer, not so reasonably priced (I paid $9 for this 500 ml bottle). Then again, it is a Danish beer, did I really expect to come across a bargain?

Served from bottle into a Samuel Smith imperial pint. Poured a massively murky red-brown with a two finger khaki colored head that subsided to one finger very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, citrus, citrus hop, dark chocolate, caramel, and caramel hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, citrus, citrus hop, and pine resin. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. If I am completely honest the dark chocolate aspect on this one was really quite a pleasant surprise. It really added a nice layer to the complexity going on in this one and tied the citrus aspect into the roastiness going on here. I’ve been trying to tick as many Evil Twin brews as possible and so far have been fairly impressed. This one is not an exception. I suggest you give this one a shot for yourself if you get the chance.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a dark, hazy, ruddy brown amber. A half finger light brown head dissipates rather quickly to a film and ring around the glass, with great lacing. Aroma dominated by piney and citrus hops with light dark malt and a hint of caramel. Flavor is a neutral malt developing pine hops, finishing somewhat dry and hop bitter. A slightly astringent aftertaste fleetingly on the finish due to not being supported by the low key malt flavor. The hops are interesting, but not bright and fresh. Medium to heavy bodied with decent creaminess. An interesting take on a brown ale, although I would hope for more distinctly flavored malt and hop elements.
