Reviewed from notes. Had at the Independent. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
A: Deep hazy copper, with a good white head and moderate visible carbonation.
S: Caramel and sweet malts, pine and citrus rind hops.
T: Follows the nose, with the addition of grapefruit and bitter pine hop profile to the mix. The caramel malts come to the front of the palate more than I would like.
M: Medium to slightly heavy bodied, alcohol well-hidden given the ABV. Adequate carbonation sensation.
O: This is a decent offering, but I'm not overly impressed with it. The caramel malt flavors clash with the hop profile. That said - I did follow it up with a black and tan (Yin & Yang), and the flavors meshed very well with the stout and were more enjoyable. But on its own Yang fell a little short.

Poured into a Westbrook tulip...
A: ruby-tinged copper; light almond, two-finger head of thick suds; nice retention leaves some webby chunks of lace.
S: piney; light-resin; light grapefruit rind; toasted malt; and some alcohol.
T: hoppiness is a touch dull (more than expected, at least); light touches of bread crust; seems to be missing some character.
M: medium-full; moderate-high carbonation; finishes dry and not quite as tasty as hoped for...
O: a nice imperial IPA, but nothing that stands out.

8 oz pour from a bottle into a snifter
Bottled on: 3/13/13
A: Pours a dark caramel color with reddish hues. 1/2 a fingers width of tan head builds then quickly fades. Leaves only the faintest hints of lacing.
S: Dank resinous hops, sappy pine, citrus rind. Malt sweetness to balance it out, and some booze to add to the complexity. I'm surprised by how great this smells. Love the aroma.
T: Malty, boozy. Hops take a back seat, which was not the case in the aroma (but may be partially due to the age, although at 2 months its not that old). I also get burnt sugar, piney hop bitterness, and citrus rind. This is really booze, although being a fan of boozy beers I actually like it. More of an American Barley than DIPA in my opinion, or reminiscent of a not as good version of DFH 120. That being said I actually really dig it.
M/D: Full bodied, not necessarily thick, and def not syrupy. Carbonation on the higher end. ABV is certainly noticeable but I think it adds nicely to the beers complexity. Drinkability is good.
O: Overall, Im a big fan of this one. Its not the typical DIPA, but if you like big, bold, boozy beers you will be a fan of this one. Now that its available in 4 packs (at less than half the price of the old singles!) I will def look to purchase this one again.
