This brew rocks! The pour needs patience because the head is very lively here. The beer looks to be a murky brown color and the head is a tan or light brown. The smell is wonderfully hoppy with some aged wood in the mix. The taste is hoppy too of course, but with the addition of the barrel aging it adds a whole new element to the beer. The aging and the hops work very well together. The mouthfeel is a bit bitey and yet has a smooth oily texture to it. The lacing is very nice on here too. Overall well worth trying for sure. Really enjoyed this on alot.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a dark, cloudy chestnut brown-amber. Bottle was a slow gusher, leaving a massive, coarse off-white head that dissipated quickly to a thin, uneven head with lots of chunky lacing. Intriguing, but confusing aroma of vinous grape juice, caramel malt, oak, hints of vanilla and hops. Flavor is rather subdued compared to the aroma, with mild vinous grape juice and must, bready and light caramel malt; earthy with hints of oak. Finishes with bittering hops and residual vanilla, dark malt and oak. Medium bodied with a pleasant mouth feel. I'm not normally a big fan of wine barrel aged beers, but the vinous influence on this one was nicely balanced with interesting oaky malt and hops. Very little herbal hop flavor, but this find of a lone bottle could have sat on a shelf for a while. This barreled beer is otherwise none the worse for the further aging. An off-beat and interesting aged ale that is at the outer fringes of the American IIPA category.

12oz bottle, with a best before date of 2015.
A - pours a very cloudy peachy white. Good amount of white foam.
S - lots of fruity citrus, with the wine barrel character coming though quite a bit. Peaches, lemony citrus.
T - interesting. No hops (not necessarily a bad thing, but its a IPA, so unusual). Lots of peach. Wine barrel character comes through with more white wine notes than barrel notes. Some white wine sourness almost, refreshing, interesting.
M - a little bit on the medium thickness to almost creamy side. Medium carbonation.
O - a very interesting beer. A buddy opened this to share. I have to say, although I didnt pay for it, the price tag on this bad boy is ridiculous. Glad I got to try it and, overall, its a solid beer. However, its definitely an odd ball of an IPA. I dont know what exactly I would call it. Worth a try, if you dont mind the price.

A: Pours a murky deep copper to amber in color with minimal amounts of visible carbonation and some orange + amber highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy dark beige head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Upfront there are some earthy notes over the smell of the malts with some light to moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit rind and pine hops. The hop aromas become more pronounced as the beer warms.
T: Upfront there is a moderate amount of grainy malty sweetness with some lighter notes of caramel and toffee. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of citrus/grapefruit rind hops and slightly lighter pine hops. Light amounts of bitterness towards the finish that fade quickly.
M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with slightly more than moderate amounts of carbonation.
O: This beer is fairly easy to drink considering how big the ABV is (10.50 %), the alcohol is fairly well hidden and there is a good balance between the sweetness of the malts and the bitterness from the hops. Definitely enjoyable.

From a 330 ml brown bottle. Pours out deep cloudy amber hue, massive loose spongy light beige head that forced me half a dozen attempts in order to empty the bottle into the glass.
Earthy notes on the nose, along with some woody and vinous character, all of which are eventually parted by a hoppy grapefruit element. Brown sugar and some caramelized malt develop as it warms.
Flavour is rather intense and for the most part comes as one long cohesive rush from sip to swallow, no particular character seems to stand out beyond another. Still, let's try to pick it apart.... Toasty, grainy malt up front with some caramel highlights, with earthy, woody notes quick to follow in the middle, accompanied by a dry vinous character and even a hint of Bretts, finishing with earthy, spicy, grapefruit pith hops. That's the slo-mo rendition, since the actual delivery to my palate gives the impression of being quite seamless.
Lighter end of medium-bodied mouthfeel, texture is effervescent from the carbonation.
Finally a barrel-aged IPA that works, and one aged in Chardonnay barrels of all things. To be honest this whole experience leaves me with the impression of sampling a well put-together Saison, with the woody earthiness subbing in for peppery phenols. This is definitely one to experience, I'll be seeking out more for sure.

Poured into a tulip. Pours copper with an immense white head that dissipates very slowly, leaving lacing on the side of the glass as it recedes. I recommend using a large tulip glass or large snifter because it will take a long time to pour this into a small tulip glass or a small snifter glass due to the fact that the slowly dissipating head is so massive. There are many tiny bubbles visible in the beer. The aroma is of citrus and piney hops, white grapes, and sweet and bready malt. The barrel aging lends a great white grape aroma to this beer. The taste is of bready and sweet malts with the citrus and piney hop notes playing with the white grape flavor in the mouth. The Chardonnay the beer picked up from the barrel aging doesn't overpower the other flavors. As it stands, the flavor is pretty balanced for a DIPA. The body is full with moderate carbonation. The finish is dry and this beer is dangerously drinkable. This is an excellent beer.

Poured from a 330ml bottle. Pours a cloudy orangey red colour with a little thin, off-white head. The nose is pretty distinctive. There's lots of big citrus hop notes as well as a strong scent of fresh squeezed fruit juice. For a hopped-up, high ABV brew, this beer is very drinkable. There's definitely a grapey flavour in there. but it blends remarkably well with whatever hop varieties were used to make this. There's also a nice persistent bitterness on the palate. For such a unique beer, it is surprisingly cohesive and coherent.

A - Hazy amber-copper with a finger of frothy off-white head. Fades fairly slowly.
S - Oak, vanilla, chardonnay, pine, grassy, and earthy hops, sweet caramelized malts, a touch of brown sugar, and some booze.
T - Oak, vanilla, buttery chardonnay, pine, grassy, earthy hops, some lightly resiny bitterness, sweet caramel and lightly caramelized malts, touch of tart and sourness, a bit of booze.
M - Medium-full bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth with dry, warming, lightly bitter finish.
D - Interesting blend of flavors. Barrel flavor a bit strong, but overall it works fairly well.

On-tap, served in a pint glass
A hazy amber body with a firm, bubbly cap that sits at two fingers and falls slowly to a thin collar. Some clingy lace here and there.
Notes of earth, caramel, citrus, white wine, and a touch of oak underneath. Interesting combination of aromas.
Sweet malts up front--caramel and biscuit--before a mild citrus bitterness of grapefruit, lemon, move in. Grapes and oak mix with a mild earthy bitterness in the finish. A touch of resiny, earthy spice lingers.
Medium body, a bit chewy, with a dry finish.
A balanced DIPA with an added layer of complexity from the white wine addition. This beer didn't wow me, but it was fairly tasty.

A: This brew has a nice hazy caramel color, with a tan foamy head.
S: This has a piney smell, with hints of raisins.
T: This is weird as it doesn't have a biting bitterness, but the hops are very present and flavorful. I don't pick out any individual flavors here. The wood flavors imparted by the barrel aging have run roughshod over the delicate flavors of the hops. I expect a fair amount of alcohol flavor to be present in such a high gravity beer. In this particular example, the alcohol isn't as obvious in the first sip, but becomes more and more present and overwhelming as the sips go on.
M: Appropriate carbonation to the style. It isn't overly thick from the sugars, giving it a medium body.
O: I really enjoy the flavors of this, but unless sipped slowly, the alcohol flavor can be a bit overpowering. This is a very different take on a DIPA and I enjoy that about it most.

Appearance - First off, this beer is virtually impossible to pour. Not that this is a bad thing per se, but the yeast is extremely intense. The head is volatile and it takes a number of pours in small stints to get it all into the glass. Small bubbles with and beige white. Unattractive lacing. A deep ruby brown/ orange. Opaque with a little sediment residing at the bottom.
Smell - After letting the head settle down, one can definitely pick up more aroma when not trying to get through a thick layer. A nice, sharp yeast smell with citrus fruits and orange peel. A tiny amount of toffee and wood.
Taste - A slightly sour finish, but tasty. Lemon, grapes, grapefruit, brown sugar and a strong use of Nothern hops. Mild woody falvor, but it is barely noticeable. Having a hard time picking up the used Chardonnay barrels in this. Nicely balanced beer, though. Not sure if there is Citra hops in this. Nice malts, too.
Mouthfeel - Highly carbonated, this beer is intense on the tongue. Aside from the carbonation, the malts, sugars, and bittering creates a decent feel but nothing too amazing, in my opinion.
Overall - Perhaps a little too hoppy for me, I find it doesn't allow for the sugars and malts to shine through enough. But everything is here! Very impressive indeed. Not one of my favorite DIPAs, but I would buy this again for sure.
