not about to call a beer of this magnitude easy drinking, but as monsterous English style barleywines go, this is about is drinkable as they come. it pours a rich burnt caramel color, with some yeast in suspension and a tall reddish tan head with good retention. I smell sweet toffee heavy English malts and a lot of alcohol. the flavor flashes sweet for awhile, like, white sugar sweet, but it dies back at the finish and lets some interesting bitterness come in. lots of dessert bread and cakey flavors, very holiday. this is an English style barleywine exactly, not one of those big hoppy heathens from the usa. I appreciate its use of restraint and subtlety, despite being so big. the alcohol sting is strong, and the buzz is intense. a good bottle to share no doubt. it has good carbonation for the style, and a predictably full body. finishes relatively clean for how sweet it starts. overall not my favorite offering from these guys, but their craftsmanship is confirmed. probably a must have for the barleywine fiend, a maybe for the rest of us.

Bottle shared at GRG1313’s tasting.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with brown sugar and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.

I hope this is the right place for this review as at least on smell this isn't matching others even closely.

Pours a massive full sniffer of head with just a light pour. Dense opaque yet no floaters with a huge cap of cream head.

The nose is funky as hell. Horse blankets, hay, skunked hops....I'm thinking a crazy sasison farm house ale. A lot of alcohol here too.

Really sweet with some hints of medicinal alcohol notes that dry it out a bit. Hops are present with some rum dried hops perahaps?

Sharp and alcoholic without being good. This beer is dry when it should be creamy, sharp when it should be...it just isn't right here. More paint thinner than great barely win.

Mine is Bigger than yours is an interesting mix of elements. It smells really interesting, it has some hints of horse blanket and the flavor but mostly I get hops and over the top sugar with alcohol paint thinner effect. This isn't a bad beer but for us americans at 11 bucks for about a 12 oz pour...more is needed.

(Served in a teku)
A- This beer pours a slightly hazy deep brown body with a thin bubblish light tan meniscus of foam. There is a gentle carbonation that pops to the surface.

S- The woody malt aroma has some white grape skin notes in the finish.

T- The spicy hops blend with a dry woody caramel flavor and a fruity grape note grows and takes on a slight gummi bear quality as it opens. The grape fruity flavor lingers on in the after taste.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle alcohol warmth when it opens and a soft fizz prick

O- This is an interesting blend of malt and grapes and it balances both nicely. There is not a rich luscious barleywine flavor but nice flavor.

I'm a sucker for b-wines I haven't tried yet, so I went ahead and bought this despite the name.

a: This was a slightly hazy cherry iced tea color. It poured with a medium sized off white head that's faded to spotty lace.

s: Boozy raisins and caramel with some faded grassy hops.

t: There is no date to be found, but this tastes like it may have been on the shelf for a while. I mean that in a good way. Sweet up front with brown sugar, grapes, and raisins. The finish brings a sweet booziness and a fairly potent hoppy tingle. A strong, charred toffee lingers with a positive sort of abrasiveness.

m: Big and chewy with soft carbonation.

o: As pricey as this was, I can't say I regret the purchase. An excellent beer like this deserves a better name.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had an orange-brown color and a cloudy texture. There was an inch of foamy, off white, fairly long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: A surprisingly muted aroma of hops, malt, and caramel.

T: Like the smell, the taste was very underplayed. The hops were very much present, along with some caramel and malt in the finish. Not quite as hoppy as most barleywines, but it's a sufficient amount. A decent flavor.

M: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Light- to medium-bodied.

O: A bit uneven in spots, but this is still a drinkable beer.

A pinkish clouded brew, a non-descriptive colored head with small lacing but good curtains.

Glue, hops and resin.

Tasting sweet sherry, raisins, jelly bean shots.

Little carbonation, sticky with a thick body, not dry.

Soft, slightly boozy, very young. Wait a decade.

Poured from a 12.7oz bottle into a dfh snifter

A: pours a slightly brown ruby amber with half a finger of tanned head that dissapates nicley and leavs a hefty amount if lacing.... Looks nice.

S: smells like sticky candy covered citrus hops, although all over the aroma is rather mild, particuarly for the style. I get notes of toffe and caramel along with citrus rine and light orange notes.... Smells like it is on the drier side then the sweeter.

T: the flavor is a deliciously amplified version of the aroma, nice toffee and dark caramel notes mixes with delicious citrus and lightly tropical hops, everything is very well rounded and there is a great balance, not overly bitter or overly sweet.

M: nice creamy medium carbonation on this heavy medium body, nice and dry particularly on the finish... A nice mildly citrus bitter aftertaste, very nice.

O: this is a really tasty barleywine, as a friend told me when he recommended this, I find it to be reminiscent of alesmith old numbskull which is one if my fav for the style, an excellent brew here.

Pours a rich mahogany, with atan 2 finger head. Laces well and overall is an attractive beer.

Aroma is rather sweet, with notes of caramel, toffee, nuts and even tinges of chocolate.

The taste echoes the sweetness, but with a bit of a burn from the alcohol. It's slight, and just enough to let you know it's a big beer. There's a nutty, toffee-like linger.

The body is fairly full bodied, with some creamy slickness too it.

It's a pretty nice barleywine. I'm presuming that this is an English as opposed to an American from the lack of hops.
