HyVee is an employee-owned chain of supermarkets in the midwest. Some have gas stations as well, some do not. At this one the liquor and beer is separated, and to the back left of the building.

As you enter, the check-out counter is to your left, and beyond that a full wall of open-face coolers that are stocked with beer, mainly singles. There are also some closed door coolers along the back wall, and wine and spirits throughout the rest of the store.

I'm not sure how large the selection is, in either terms of wall space or number of bottles, but I was impressed. I'd simply stopped in to try to find something good to enjoy back at the ranch (Franziskaner or Pilsner Urquell would have done) and I was amazed at the selection. It might have been the best selection I'd seen on this recent trip, although Whole Foods does give them some competition.

Where this Hy-Vee wins out over Whole Foods, in my opinion, is their service. When I went to Whole Foods I was looking for Schneider Vitus (as that beer is called for specifically in my recipe for Obatzda). The clerk told me they didn't have it, and he was sorry, and that they hadn't been able to get it. He was very busy, and I understand that, but when I asked for a substitute he didn't have any suggestions, and then when I asked for a doppelbock he pointed out Great Divide's 'Wolfgang' and scurried off. Mike at HyVee, however, was more than willing to help out, and he seemed excited to be talking about beer. Of course, they weren't at all busy, so the situation was a little different.

Overall I thought it was a clean and orderly store, with fresh stock, reasonable prices, and good service. It was the last stop I made, but it should have been the first. Now I know.

As of 8/20/2012 They have 892 different beers in stock. The selection is simply amazing. Distrobution isn't the best into Nebraska, so some people may not think the selection is truly world-class, but if it comes to Nebraska this Hy-vee will normally get it. They also have around 150 singles available for mix-6 packs at $8.99.

The prices are very average. Sometimes they have a small clearance section where you can pick up a brew on the cheap.

Richard and KJ are very knowledgeable and provide great recommendations. Some of the other staff members are a little wet behind the ears.

I wish they would have UV protection over the windows that face south. The coolers don't get direct light, but the mix-6 rack sure does.

If you are visiting Omaha, and can only stop at one shop this should be the place you hit.

Good place, 753 different beers with new beers added weekly. Typically 5-20 beers added weekly.

Selection is as good as or better than most specialty spirit shops here in Omaha.

The employees have sampled most of the new ones they get in so good service from them on what to try.

Good mix and match selections and good international choices covering the globe.

Beers from Upstream and Nebraska Brewing company highlight the local beers.

Also a decent selection of wine and spirits.

Definitely worth a look see!

Update 12/23/10: Last two times I've been in there I was giving free samples of Samuel Smith Winter Welcome Ale one time and Kiuchi Commemorative Ale the second time.
