The monks of the Benedictine Monastery of Christ in the Desert in Abiquiu, New Mexico, brew this gold-honey color Belgian Style Abbey Tripel Ale each year in limited quantities, using whole native hops grown at the monastery. Monks' Abbey Tripel Ale Reserve is distinctly fruity and spicy. The yeast lends notes of apricot, peach and plum. The hops are well balanced and add a slight earth/spice flavor before the finish. The barley malts provide a rich quality up-front, and a round fullness in the middle. The finish is clean and dry with light hints of citrus and mint. Like all of our Monks' Ales, our Tripel is "made with care and prayer".

Appeared to be a very filtered yellow mustard seed color with maybe one finger of white head that settled down to an 8th of an inch fairly quickly. Lighter than I expected. Light lacing.
Smells like grape (?) Almost getting some herbal or vegetable smells too.
Tastes just like it smells. A chunk of pear wrapped in grape skins and then dunked in welch's sparkling white grape juice. Very crispy. At around 9% ABV it was very smooth, deceptively potent.
Mouthfeel is light, crisp, I wouldn't go more than that.
Overall, not what I was expecting, and not something I can see myself going back to. Maybe I'll give the rest to the non beer drinking women in my life to enjoy. I was expecting something darker and not as grape-like, but to each his own, I'm sure someone out there loves it.

Im shocked at some of the other reviews. This is a fantastic beer. The look, smell and taste are incredible and it is the first commercial beer to my knowledge to use newmexicanus. Thats right, a whole new strain of hops that will begin introduction to the industry next year, but check it out now. My understanding is this beer is brewed with four neomex strains grown out at the monastery in the desert. Abbey Beverage is one of the most unnoticed breweries in the west. They make fantastic beer that is well crafted. Please check out this tripel if you get a chance. It is both rooted in the traditions of the style and creative at the same time. Thanks ABC.

I've seen this beer around for a while, always liked the swing top bottle, so I finally bought one to try.
A: hazy, dark yellow color; very little head; no apparent carbonation
S: pear; citrius; pinot grigio; not very strong and not very pleasant, almost like Coors Lite
T: light; slight tingle on the tongue; tastes of pear, peach, apricot, and lemon; has a sweet flavor but with a tang; slight floral notes; alcohol bite
M: light and crisp
O: Initially, I thought that the beer was infected. But after more tasting and consulting a friend, I realized that it is not. I don't really care for the taste, however I think it does follow the style closely except that it does not mask the alcohol bite. I would not drink this again. But someone who does like Tripel Ale would find this to be enjoyable.

Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden yellow color with a frothy two-finger head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing are left behind.
Slightly spicy aroma with hints of pepper and clove followed by bready yeast, biscuit malt, earthy hops and estery light fruit notes. Grassy and resinous with a noticeable alcohol presence along with some apple, pear and bubblegum. The bread and spice notes are a bit strong for the style in my opinion and the nose is otherwise pretty tame/bland.
Medium bodied and thankfully a bit more complex and flavorful than the aroma suggests. There's still a prominent zesty spice presence up front with some clove and coriander and its unusually hop forward for the style with a dry and crisp bitterness that lingers throughout. Floral and perfume like with lots of bubblegum and alcohol flavor along with some green apple, pear and apricot. Some bread like yeast flavor adds fullness and there's some pale malt for balance but again, this beer has too strong of a sweet alcohol and earthy hop,presence for my liking. That being said, there is little to no heat making it a bit easier to drink than it sounds. Not terrible but not a very good example of the style in my opinion.
