American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.50% ABV

Notes:
Our single-hop rye pale ales are created to showcase the flavor and aroma characteristics of individual hop varieties. The grain recipe is kept the same and only the type of hop is changed from batch to batch. Citra is one of our favorite hop varieties and has some crazy tropical fruit flavors and aromatics – think mango, pineapple, and passionfruit.

Pale gold pour with slight hazing from the Rye. A billowing white crown fades slowly and laces nicely.

Aroma is mild biscuity malt and lightly spicy Rye. The hops are juicy citrus and tropical mango all the way.

Firm malt entry with underscores of Rye spice. It's well-hopped for the style and screams Citra with it's ripe mango, pineapple, and tangerine goodness.

Lighter medium body with a crisp mouthfeel and superb drinkability. A seriously solid offering from Westbrook, definately my favorite from these guys so far. I hope this is available all Summer!

On draft at Grapevine Ft. Mill, SC.

Hazy golden orange beer. Nice color. A half inch white, rocky head melts to a thin layer after a minute or two. Nice lacing.

Massive tropical fruit aroma. Pineapple, orange, mango. A slight hint of spiciness after the beer settles down a little bit in the glass.

A spicy bitterness hits the tongue immediately. Followed by sweet and spicy malt, fruity hops and finally a spicy bitter finish.

Relatively thin bodied for a rye beer. The bitterness, spiciness and carbonation combined is a little rough on the tongue.

Served from bottle into a COAST Willi. Poured a hazy golden yellow-orange with a two finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, fruit hop, earth, tropical fruit, tropical fruit hop, and marijuana. The flavor was of sweet malt, tropical fruit, tropical fruit hop, fruit, fruit hop, and spice. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly great brew. I will be upfront about this, I am a huge fan of citra hops. This brew definitely delivered the appeal that I really enjoy from this hop variety. The tropical fruit aspect on this one really made this brew work extremely well. Really glad that Westbrook is going through and doing these single hop series brews. But just so they know, they knocked this one out of the park in my opinion. Well done guys.

22oz bottle into a pint glass
Bottle on: 11/12/12

Thanks to mikeincharleston for throwing me this bottle in exchange for ordering some MoAS for us to split. Thanks Mike.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a huge 3plus fingers width of slightly off white colored head which hangs around for a long time before dissipating down. Leaves tone of layered lacing.

S: Tropical fruits as expected, with tons of mango and some pineapple. There is also a fairly big dank, resinous quality, and a bit of spice. Really smells great, not as one dimensional as I expected, I suppose from the rye.

T: Rye notes are very prominent in the taste, followed by resinous, piney hop characters. I also get lemon zest and orange rind. Almost no tropical fruit flavors come out in the taste. Still very good though, I thoroughly enjoyed the rye presence.

M/D: Medium bodied, pretty heavily carbonated maybe a touch too much, drinkability is very good though. This disappears out of the glass in no time.

O: Overall, a very nice beer. Great aroma, tasty, and drinkable. Another well done beer by Westbrook.

Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a dense white head that settles to a soapy ring and wispy haze. Super fresh and pungent CItra aromas of peach, mango, papaya, and grapefruit with a moderately spicy and sweet rye malt profile. Quite nice, but I'm always a sucker for a Citra-bomb. Taste is obviously Citra-heavy as well, with more grapefruit, peach, and papaya, a mildly sweet rye malt profile, and a moderate bitterness. Infinitely drinkable (like all the Rye Pale Ales have been), with a medium body and solid carbonation. Very likely the best of the Single Hop Series, but again, I'm a CItra whore.
