750ml bottle in to snifter tulip

A - Deceit is a subtle golden, soft yellow color, with some opaque-ness towards the bottom of the glass, some significant lacing, and a subtle white head

S - sweetly malty, slightly banana-lemon; it smells like a medium-hopped Belgian

T - a little banana, a little lemon zest; Belgian yeasts are all over this; there is some medium alcohol bite toward the end that includes a little spice; slightly sweet and tarty; some apple and pear notes

M - this beer is extremely smooth and hides the 9.4% amazingly well; the beer is pleasantly carbonated and light bodied; the alcohol provides a bit of a dry finish

O - solid; for me, a really good pseudo-introduction to popular/respected Belgian ales; it's really well-balanced, accessible, and full of nuance. Really strong offering.

With an elegant and simple label, Funkwerks Deceit continues to win over the eye with glassware recommendations, proper serving temperatures, cellaring requirements, and food pairings. Equipped with tasting notes, I like this guy already!

Strongly hazed, the dense appearance of yellow early and goldenrod late yields a separation of creamy white froth that billows to the rim before starting its slow recession into the glass. Its firm retention rests with an uneven sheet across the glass with intermittent and random lacing patterns on the glass. With less of the spritzy carbonation that I expected, the beer is a sturdy yet somber Belgian-style Tripel Ale.

Aromas are both delicate and bold while shining with notes of bread dough, sweet grain grain and powdered sugar. Fruit aromatics of banana, orange peel, lemon, apple, and melon even out the sweetness and allow a wine-like note to exhume. Perfumy spices of coriander, clove, white pepper, paradise seed, and cilantro conclude the scent with an attitude of zeal and elegance.

Its full Belgian flavor is wine-like, dryly sweet and backed by cookie dough and confectioner's sweetness. Its fruity taste of white grapes, pears, lemons, apples and cantaloupe is both rich and racy. Spicy alcohol flavors align with freshly grated white pepper, grassy bitterness, and straw-like hop bite. Even a mild soapy note with perfume returns in echos of flavors long after the taste finishes.

Its creamy medium-body is lightly zesty in texture. Its slightly elevated sweetness is slow to fade, but eventually gives way to a spicy and earthen finish. Lightly ginger-like in heat and prickle, its wine-like acidity balances the texture as much as does the alcohol or alcohol warmth.

Though the brewers have devised a very good Belgian-style Tripel, with a name like "Funkwerks", I expected something less normal. And with a brand called "Deceit", I expected an unexpected turn that the beer simply doesn't provide. It just ends up being a boring very good beer.

A: light yellow, slighty cloudy. Great thick head when first poured, 3 fingers +, mellows to a light head that laces the glass.

S: lovely scent! Citrus, heavier floral and fresh bread scent.

T: wow! It's great! Lily like floral blends into clove and coriander. Lemon and tangerine notes. Complexity is enhanced as it warms. Fresh tasting yeast, but not overwhelming.

M: light to medium carbonation. Hearty mouthfeel for the flavor, complimentary to the taste for sure!

O: this is a lovely beer! Great balance of freshness and spice without being overpowering. Easily drunk alone or with a meal. Abv is high, but well hidden. as others said, deceit is a great name for it, at least pertaing to the abv! This will be a favorite in our house, for sure!!!

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a murky yellow with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, spices, and a slightly soapy aroma. Taste is much the same with a yeasty flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

A - Golden straw/hay color, slightly hazy. Soapy, white head quickly calms down to a small rocky cap. Some spotty lacing.

S - Light and citrusy, with definite lemon zest coming through. A little bit of green apple and "spicy" yeast character.

T/M - Follows the nose really well. Citrus zest mixes with green apple and pear notes. Mild bite of spice in the finish. Alcohol is hidden extremely well. Light body with just the right amount of prickly carbonation.

O - I like this one a lot! I will definitely being grabbing a couple more.

Pours a very light golden/hay color. Clean and clear. Nice foamy white head, a bit rocky. Lacing is spotty.

The name hits the mark. While it looks light and non-threatening, the aroma is a kick in the nose. Banana, some bubble gum, coriander, Belgian yeast and spices. Light biscuit. Tingly.

Flavor is chock full of spices and yeast, without being overly bready. It's still a lighter flavor beer, with lots o'spices. Some banana and coriander, white pepper, lemon zest, biscuit. Pear and green apple.

Feels great. It pops. Nice finish, dry and smooth. Zings.

Great name for a nice beer. ABV is well hidden; this thing will warm you up

750ml bottle served slightly chilled into a goblet.

I've been looking forward to trying this ever since the GABF results came out. Congrats to Funkwerks on winning gold!

Deceit is a very pale golden yellow color with good clarity. The head is thick and slow to settles leaving some spotty lacing on the glass.

Aroma is full of sweet and tart lemon character. It smells fresh and well-hopped for a Belgian.

Flavor is big and intense with more lemon, some pepper, and alcohol. It's not hot but the alcohol lets you know it's there. each sip goes from sweet, to bitter, and finally finishes dry and crisp.

Mouthfeel is light in body, nicely carbonated, and well balanced. Alcohol dries the palate on the finish.

Overall another strong offering from Funkwerks.

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy straw amber with a big creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet malts and banana with straw and yeast.

The flavor is sweet soapy belgian malts and banana with some earthy yeast and a dry, almost plasticky, finish. There's a bit of warming alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a lot of spritzy carbonation.

Overall, an OK Belgian with some off-notes.

Amazing fluffy (bright) white head. Brew is clear and delicious yellow looking. Lacing is sparse, but still prevalent.

Crisp, clean, light banana.

Whoa. No heat or burn. Impressive. Awesome brew!!! I'm going to the nearest LQ to buy em' all!!!! Banana and cloves are nicely spaced out, nothing over whelming. Carbonation is is very light and perfect. Nothing over spiced or offensive.

This brew holds nothing back. I wish all brews could be this true. I'm kinda shocked/mad it sat in my fridge for so long... Price-point was perfect @ $15; I'll be buying all I can find. MAWHAHAHA

Big foam-up in the tall glass, but it settles down to a puffy head. Very light golden color. Malty and fruity aromas.

Spicy and sharp on the tongue. Just a brief flirtation with sweet malt, followed by the tart appley taste. Fruity flavors of pear skins and dry pineapple. This is a serious mouthful of flavor. The Belgian yeasty taste is quite bold, and ends with the dry mouthfeel and slight bitterness.

I would call this a robust sort of Tripel, and if you like the bold flavors it's a winner. From the 750 ml bottle bought at Mayfair Liquors in Denver.
