Growler pour for Best Damn Night Of The Barrels held at The Beer Company in San Diego, CA.
Pours a clear reddish-brown with a foamy bone colored head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, cherries, whiskey, and wood. Taste is much the same with cherry and whiskey flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a lot of interesting elements going on that work quite well together.
Serving type: growler

On tap at The Beer Company. This won gold in Category: 22 Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer (103 entries) at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest. Needless to say, I'm excited to try it. This is a Scotch Ale aged for four months in a High West Manhattan Barrel with cherry purée. This is the first I've heard of a Barrel Aged Manhattan. Apparently it's simply a Manhattan (rye whiskey, vermouth, bitters) aged in a 2-year old rye whiskey barrel for 120 days. I didn't know this was done.
A: Dark brown with deep reddish highlights. The frothy beige head is an inch high.
S: Toffee, caramel, vanilla, and rye whiskey. Notes of plum, milk and dark chocolate, dark cherry, and oak waft from the glass. Floral aromatics are restrained. Great aroma.
T: Very smooth blend of chocolate, caramel, and whiskey. Tame alcohol presence with notes of vanilla and oak. There's a dash of cherry in there that melds with plum and an upper low bitterness. Lots of dark fruit throughout accompanying a touch of oxidation and floral character . Alcohol presence increases in the caramel, chocolate, and whiskey finish.
M: Lower full body with a smooth, sticky, viscous mouthfeel. It's chewy with much alcohol warming. Lower medium carbonation.
Overall: This is not what I expected, but it's very good.
Serving type: on-tap
