Pours dark brown with a redish tinge. It has a tan head lasts about 30 seconds with poor lacing. Very light aromas of chocolate with a bit of a vegetative quality. Heavy carbonation with a light mouthfeel. The flavors are even lighter than the smell with a slightly bitter finish. In my opinion, it's a lighter beer than it lets on. It's a good middle of the road, easy drinking, easy-to-get beer.

for the price there isnt a better black and tan going. the 16oz cans are nice too. the pours a really dark, just like the porter, a little less thick, but equally dark, hersheys brown with a small off white head lastign just seconds. smells chocolatey, i think much more porter in this blend than 50/50, at least thats what the nose tells me, with all that dark roasty malt. the flavor is also favoring porter, but its lighter in feel, and there is a paler malt profile the the look or the smell give away. a little dark cocoa, a little burnt toast, there is a slightly bitter finish on it. smooth feel, maybe a touch heavy on the carbonation, but the body is medium as it should be, and its easy to put a few of these away, especially in the fall. far far superior to the regular yuengling lager.

More from my Pennsylvania project:

From Franz's in Lebanon:

Out of the bottle and into a pint glass:

A: pitch black colored body with barely any head and barely any lacing, no carbonation to be seen rising.

S: light coffee with plum with some gentle maltiness here and there.

T: basically the same, and not showcasing anything spectacular.

M: light to medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. I would say this was fairly drinkable.

O: well, I'm not exactly sure what to say other than I'm glad I tried it. I don't think I'll come back to this, but its not exactly a bad beer.

Another Yuengling product...
I found the lager horrible, the porter drinkable, how is the black & tan?...

Off to a good start, as this beer pours a pretty creamy, tan head. The foam sticks around a lot longer than the porter, and it even sticks to the glass a bit.

As for color, this is a almost completely opaque beer. If held up to the light, you can see your finger on the other side. The brew is dark brown/black, with copper highlights reflected in the glass.

Above average smell, but not as deep as you would expect form the color. Mostly malty aromas, as you would expect. A bit disappointing.

The taste of this beer is somewhere just above average. For the color and the head, I would have expected this beer to have a fuller flavor. It's no light beer, or even one of those "yellow beers," but it is not as full bodied as I would have preferred it to be. That being said, the taste is not at all unpleasant.

So this is another one of those beers that is a "get what you pay for" kind of thing. Not a craft beer, but better than a Bud or Bud-type product. I like this one the best of all the Yuengling flavors I have tasted so far. This is a good go-to beer for parties, bargain hunters, or people that may be upgrading from Bud Light.

This brew poured with a seriously thick tan head, about two fingers worth, that dissipated slowly and left lots of lacing on the glass. The body was a dark brown with no visible carbonation due to the color. The nose presented with mostly roasted malts, grain and then a hint of coffee. Smelled good to me. The beginning of the sip hit me with mild coffee up front and then roasted malts came through. Some sweetness and bread also came through on the subsequent sips. The sweetness mostly manifested as brown sugar, but was altogether mild. The body was a medium thickness with middle of the road carbonation. The finish was relatively long with the roasted malts apparent in the taste. It was an easy drinker with some flavor that I wouldn’t mind having again. I think the style is generally towards the boring side, but this one was probably the best of the style that I’ve had. Add to the fact that this beer tends to be cheap…worth a sip.

12oz Bottle from CJ's Potsdam NY for 2$

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size fizzy beige coloured head. It's hard to make out the level of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 4 minutes.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee, grains, metallic

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel/toffee, and a hint of chocolate. There is also some corn/grains and some metallic notes. It ends with a grainy aftertaste.

Overall - It has a promising scent but doesn't really deliver taste wise. It smells like a porter, but basically tastes like a lager. Still an easy drinking and non offensive brew.

I'm not one of those people enamored with Yuengling. I wouldn't even put them in the same category as Sam Adams. That being said, I do drink it with my rose colored taste buds, being it is America's oldest brewery.

Poured into a glass, it does look very inviting. It almost looks like a flattened Coke. Has that reddish hue when you hold it to a light. Only a few very small bubbles.

Smell is. . . beer? Nothing to get overly excited over. But not an unpleasant beer smell.

Taste is better than average. I like this a little more than Yuengling Lager, which is their flag ship, and I guess you could say average.

Mouthfeel is again pretty average.

Overall a decent average beer. If I were drinking it from a tap where I didn't know what I was getting, I would get excited by the color, then disappointed from there on out. Price/availability is a semi redeeming quality. Where it's plentiful, it's a safe choice. Where Yuengling is a rarity, I would probably stick to regular and let the novelty guide my tastebuds.

My favorite beer from Yuengling.

Pours out a pretty dark brown with a decent amount of head.

The aroma has toasted malt notes along with subtle amounts of chocolate.

The taste is very much the same with the faint taste of chocolate and toasted malt. It's not a light beer, but it's not full-bodied either.

For the price this is a decent beer that is good to have around for parties or if you can't afford whatever you usually drink.

A- The appearance is almost just as dark as a porter, when put up to a light you can see a tint of red. The head has a nice off white foam look to it not too thick or creamy.

S- Each time i've had this beer the smell never really stuck out to me. It has somewhat of a coffee bean smell to it but mostly it just smells like a Porter brewed beer would.

T- The taste is what I like most about this beer. For being a dark beer it is exceptionally smooth. I get hints of coffee and roasted almonds along with a Lager taste.

F- The feel has alot to do with the taste. Its really smooth and easy to drink.

O- Overall this beer is one of my favorites and always will be. The look and the taste is what makes me really love this beer and its definitely a plus that its brewed by the Oldest Brewery in America. Definitely my second favorite next to Guinness Extra Stout.

Poured from a twist-off 12-oz. bottle into a Sam Adams tumbler pint glass.

A: Clear, dark, reddish amber color with a tint of brown beneath a one-finger head of tight, foamy, an carbonation that leaves very weak, soapy lace on the glass.

S: Faint chocolate and bittersweet grains mix with an herbal, raisin aroma and lager yeast.

T: Crisp, grainy cereal malts hit the palate first, throwing bits of sweet oat and rice at the tongue. This melds with a mild, herbal hop bite that's dry and sharp with some off veggie flavors in the mix. The finish is bittersweet and very carbonated with a hint of roasted malt and hop resin.

M: Thin mouthfeel with lots of carbonation and a crisp intake.

O: Not a great Black & Tan, considering the parts that went into making it; Yuengling's pale lager and sub-par porter. I see this as a novelty beer and would almost want to drink either their straight porter or simply the amber lager.

Yeah, this is especially boring, especially for a dark beer. It takes no risks and tastes a little mass produced. The appearance is average, nice color and an ok head. Smells like an average, not bold, dark lager. Taste is watered down. A little malty and a little citrusy, and a little hoppy. Everything about the taste is just not bold. Too carbonated, and not very creamy. This beer needs help. It's not terrible, but I expected more. It's not even as good as a normal Yuengling which is also not bold, and a little boring. Oh well.

A - Pours a dark brownish-red color with a creamy textured head almost 3 fingers in width; fades rather quickly but leaves moderate lacing on the glass.

S - Nothing special. The beer is definitely present with a bitter-sweet hint of bread.

T - The taste is presented with a nice porter/lager balance; a touch of sweetness that fades to a bitterness.

M - This is a light, crisp beer that is easy to drink. It has moderate carbonation.

O - Overall this is not a bad beer. I definitely rate it above average and have no problem drinking more of these in the future.

A: Drank out the bottle. I know, I know, but Yuengling is better out the bottle imo.

S: Coffee and malts. Some bread.

T: Similar to a Michelob Amberbock but more watered down and sweeter. I has the bit of citrus that Yuengling is known for. Bit of cream on the end of a nice roasted taste. Slight roasted coffee aftertaste.

O: I liked it. For the price it is amazing. I prefer Yuengling's Lager though. I would also choose Michelob Amberbock over this for the factt hat it is so similar but this has a bit less bite, and if Im getting this kind of beer I want more than just a slightly roasted lager. But overal a good beer that I will have again.

1403rd Review on BA
Bottle to Mug
12oz

No bottle date

Thanks to Kathleen for bringing this back from VA.

App- When I poured this out, it looked exactly like a soda. It had a small bubbly tan head and then was gone. No cling.

Smell- More of the base beer comes out on this with a predominant corn, sugary sweet aroma. A little bit of the roast from the porter comes out but not much.

Taste- I get more of the lager notes on this and well seeing as I am not much a fan of lagers the addition of the porter vs. stout made this a bit awkward for me to drink. A bit sweet and a bit unbalanced.

Mouth- A lighter body like a lager and a bit grainy from the porter. A nice carbonation level but just okay.

Drink- Its okay, I prefer an IPA and Stout combo.

I forgot that I'd even had this before (in a can). The main difference seems to be that the head's a bit stronger and the feel was a little spritzier.

The head is actually a respectable size. It falls off a little quickly, but not immediately. It's pretty creamy and leaves a likewise creamy foam. Some spotty lacing does remain.
The smell is mostly chocolate malts in one, a bit sweet with a slightly astringent roasted aroma. Perhaps a light bitterness is present in the smell as well.
The flavor is pretty much the same, but it becomes a little too sweet and the astringency is a little harsher on the palate. Otherwise it's a nice blend of roasted, chocolate and generally malty flavors with a light hops bitterness balance. The finish is a little harsh as well.
It's what I'd expect; at first, it's quite crisp, almost overdoing it, but it gets tamed as it warms and is really quite creamy. As with the can, while not impressively smooth, just enough creaminess makes this one flow.
It's above average.

Smells mostly bready, with a little spice, and hints of chocolate and coffee. No noticeable hop aroma.

Nice dark brown with reddish hues. Not quite opaque.

I've been going strictly craft for a while, so I have to remember this is not a microbrew. The taste just leaves me searching for more. Slightest, tiniest roasted bitterness. There seems to be a little hop bitterness but it's hard to find.

Mouthfeel is pretty thin.

I tried to stay open-minded with it, but the B&T just doesn't stand up to microbrewed craft beer. But it gets the job done. And the price point is great!

12 ounce can poured into a standard nonic.

A: Pours a dark brown, a little light making it's way through if you look at it at an angle, with a big thick light brown head on top, 2 fingers worth, that dissipated quickly but a third of an inch's worth stuck around for the party.

S: Muted notes of coffee and a touch of corn sweetness.

T: Taste follows the nose. I've always found Yuengling Lager to be overly sweet, but the bitter roastiness of the Porter really helps balance it out. In addition to bringing much needed bitterness from the roast, it also gives the beer some *body* and *heft* to it.

M: Good carbonation. As eluded to in taste, it has a great *heft* to it in the mouth. Good thickness and richness to it. And a slightly dry, bitter-sweet finish gives it some staying power.

D/O: Certainly a drinkable, enjoyable beer. Can easily have 4-5 on a given Saturday. A touch too sweet for my liking, but it'll do, certainly in a pinch when options are limited.

12oz bottle, Bruery tulip, no discernable freshness date.

Dark red brown with yellow edges, like a dark rum, almost opaque, but not as dark as the majority of Porters. Initially a decent two finger light tan head forms, though it fades leaving a moderate-small ring and no lace.

The nose is fruity with classic English esters, dry from darker malts, a bit of licorice, and lager crispness.

Flavors tend toward the lighter side; lager-like cracker, dry, minimal sweetness.

There is plenty of carbonation, but it's not at lager levels. The body is also a bit thicker.

I'm not crazy about the idea of packaged Black and Tans, but I'm thankful that my dad brought this back from vacation for me. It's much like a watered down Porter, making me think that Yuengling's Porter straight must be a bit better.

12oz bottle into Hacker-Pschorr becker

Pours a dark ruby-brown, nearly opaque, with a small tan-brown head. Actually leaves some lacing! Smell is lager yeast fruitiness with notes of chocolate and light roast. Slightly stale tasting malt is initial taste with light roasted malt and lager coming through in the end. Lots of flavor for a beer this cheap and most of it is quite good. Mouthfeel is very average in all regards though perhaps a bit "wet."

A very flavorful cheap beer with lager and porter notes, would but in a pinch or to introduce someone to porters.

This beer was served out of a 12oz. bottle dispensed into a glass....

Presentation - Nothing flashy going on with the label or artwork. Give a classy old-school feel.

Appearance - Pours a deep root beer brown with a 1 1/2 finger airy mocha head. Head retention was just under a minute(50 seconds) and fades to a thin foam ring and patchy coating.

Smell - Smells of a sweet dark chocolate malt with very light hints of roasting. No hops evident at all.

Taste - Tastes of roasted coffee, butter, and nuttiness on the front end. Toffee and corn-like malt sweetness dominate that back end.

Mouthfeel - Not much carbonation and slightly watery. I would say this is on the light end of medium bodied.

Drinkability - OK taste and lighter feel make this just drinkable.

My first Black and Tan out of a bottle and I was not impressed at all. Overall pretty bland and blase. I would not buy this or seek out.

A modest, tight almond foam leaves no lace. Fills a tulip glass with a silky, chocolate brown that is almost black.

Chocolate syrup and little else, though it does smell dusty.

Malt with some molasses and faint wheat bread. There is a slight bitterness to be found in a brief finish.

Watery texture with light body, lively carbonation, and no alcohol.

This is an easy barstool beer that could make up a session while watching football and eating wings.

Pours a deep brown with a black appearance. Short and bubbly light tan colored head with weak retention. Cream, milk chocolate, roasted malt, rye spices and roasted coffee on the aroma. First sip is a moderately carbonated heavy cream flavor with light notes of milk chocolate, brown sugar and rye bread. Turns into a flat, roasted nut flavor with an even flatter aftertaste. Oddly light body, awkward overall flavor. Yuengling lager is so delicious i was definitely expecting greatness with this black & tan, sad to say i didn't get it.

Poured from can into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a deep brown nearly black color with a huge billowy tan head. The head dissipates very fast leaving a small amount of lacing and a very thin layer of ever persistent foam.

Smell – Some roasty malt aromas are heaviest. A good dark bread backbone mixed with some lighter sweet caramel aromas.

Taste – The taste starts out very porter like with a roasty-bready-sweet flavor. The sweetness is largely of brown sugar with the breadiness being of brown bread. Towards the middle the brown sugar flavors seem to shift to being more burnt and caramel in nature. At the end a slight bitterness comes to the tongue as some of the sweeter flavors dissipate and allow the more bready flavors to shine through.

Mouthfeel – Just above an average creaminess with a very moderate level of carbonation. The carbonation in just right for the beer as it gives a nice tingle on the tongue, but the mouthfeel, while not bad, could be a little thicker for the dark and bready nature of the beer.

Overall – Yuengling always offers a good bang for the buck. They deliver again with the black and tan. It has some nice roasty and sweet flavors and aromas at a very good price.

A: Pours a semi-opaque (due to the dark color) dark brown in color with lots of amber and reddish highlights when held up to the light. The beer poured with a two finger tall beige head that reduces to a thin patch in the center and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Very light lacing is observed.

S: Some malty sweetness with some light hints of caramel and some hints of adjunct malts - graininess.

T: Flavor really follows the smell on this beer, caramel and grainy malt sweetness dominate the flavor. Very little hop presence and almost no bitterness.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Slightly creamy. Slightly watery as the beer warms.

O: Not a bad beer but nothing special either... Easy of enough to drink and light enough to be sessionable but I'm not certain I would choose as a session beer. The flavor and the aroma of the beer are slightly muddled.

From a bottle in a weizen glass

A: Dark, almost black, almost entirely opaque. 1/4 finger head that dissipates quickly. Few bubbles to be seen, even when held to the light.

S: My favorite part. Sweet, malty smell, richer than expected from such a cheap beer. Notes of maple and other delicious syrups

T: Doesn't come through with the smell. Malty, with little if any hop flavor. A bit of caramel comes through, but mostly tastes bland.

M: Typical to low carbonation, flat, thin feel. Has a sticky effect after the sip.

O: Ok. Cheap, so it gets the job done. Not stellar. Stick with Yuengling Lager if you're going to buy Yuengling.
