The wife and I stopped in Oxford to dine at the famed City Grocery and visit the William Faulkner House and Ole Miss. I didn't expect to find any beer place here, but here's Proud Larry's. Alrighty.
This joint is in the Square, right where the action is. Inside y'all find a wide, airy bar with several dining areas, including a stage for live music. The bar is the place to be, though, with the locals.
I expected the beer selection to be better, but I guess it's alright for Mississippi. Eight taps (not the twelve listed here), of which three were local brews from Lazy Magnolia (Reb Ale, Indian Summer, Southern Pecan). Plus Guinness, Blue Moon, Budweiser, Dos Equis and Sam Adams Seasonal.
About 20 bottles to choose from, mostly macro crap. Only Abita and Sierra Pale are decent. But it doesn't matter to the locals- they all appear to drink Bud out of a bottle!
The wife and I were happy enough with our Lazy Magnolias (I had the Pecan and she had the Red Ale, which is a hoppy-dry-yummy ale). The pints were incredibly fresh!
We didn't try any food, but the menu looked only OK. Fried apps, sandwiches, pasta, pizza. One appealing special on the board: crab & chanterelle orzo.
This is a nice, relaxed place to spend a lazy hot summer afternoon in Mississippi. You shouldn't come here for the beer, but y'all enjoy Proud Larry's anyways.
