750mL bottle split 3 ways

A: Red tinted mahogany with a thin lashing of head. Some legs.

N: ripe grapes, lactic acide, some strawberry, cherry, and oak. Wine barrel is evident.

M: Sour lactic acid and sweet tarts. There's an ample amount of the aforementioned fruits, but this has the same base level taste of the other Cascade sours.

M: It's on the lighter side, though it's still heavier than I like and has an oiliness about it.

O: Typical Cascade sour. Nothing special, but it's not off putting to drink, either.

Thanks to John11486 for sharing this one at jmgrub's tasting.

Pours a clear brown with a foamy tan head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some fruity, wood, and vinegar aromas. Taste is much the same with an acidic finish on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

2010 vintage, it's been in my "cellar" for a while. I've had this before but never while in a position to review it.

Hand cork came out surprisingly easy, around one finger width of off-white head from a pretty quick pour. The best way to describe the color of this one would have to be a dark garnet hue. Retention is surprisingly good despite the age and there is some lacing as well. The head is really smooth and creamy looking. Nice to look at and hold to the light.

Quite complex in the aroma. Red wine vinegar is the main attraction, but there's also a substantial amount of raspberry, cherry, vanilla and oak. It smells very "bright".

Even though this is classified as an American Wild Ale, it always reminds me a bit more of a stronger Flanders Red, which I must admit is a style that I'm not that wild about. With that said, this is a very good tasting sour. The vinegar isn't all that apparent which is the main thing that turns me off to the style. A lot of fruit flavors - the big one I get is cranberry, but cherry and raspberry are there too. There's a woody undertone with a slight vanilla hint which rounds things out very well.

Mouthfeel is very good, a nice medium feel with a good carbonation level. Overall this is a winner. It's been about a year since I've had this beer and I've only ever had it shortly after release. I have to say I think the age has done a lot for it, it seems to be better than I remember and I'm really enjoying how it's drinking right now. I'd recommend two years on it. No oxidation on this bottle and no alcohol presence at all.

Courtesy of MordorMongo, thanks Scott!

This beer pours a light bodied dark amber with a slight beige lacing. The nose is light and tart with acetic sour and raspberry vinigrette. Shit. The flavors are light and acidic with cherry. It's pretty one dimensional. Fruity vinegar. It drinks lighter in body and finishes quickly. It's ok, definitely not worth the money. This was a big want but also a bit disappointment. I wanted more than a light bodied cherry, raspberry vinagrette.

This one was a part of cmrillo’s 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! Shared by BRoss242! 2009 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured a reddish brown with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cherry, funk, tart, and tart cherry. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, funk, tart, and tart cherry. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I was really happy to see this one show up at the tasting as it was quite enjoyable and fairly refreshing to boot. It was really well balanced with a little favoritism to the tart aspect. Cascade has been doing really good things with their sours and this one is no exception. If you have tried this one, you already know. If not, what the Hell are you waiting for?

Light fizzy head, slight yeast chunked slight clear cola brown color.

Nose nice tart fruit, raisin, malt vinegar, nice sourness, light reddish malt, pretty good.

Taste brings quite a bit of sour, light malt vinegar, nice acid and hint of lactic, hint if reddish malt and brown sugar raisin, tart plum, slight sticky. Finish is drier but light phlemmy, bit more sour malts, acid, and dark fruit, and hint of bready malt.

Mouth is med bodied, almost no carb.

Overall quite nice, good blend of malt vinegar, tartness, fruit, acid, lactic, and hint of dry bready malt finish.

750ml bottle into Duvel tulip. Think I picked this bottle up some time in 2010 and somehow never got around to opening it. Bottle says "8.06% ABV, 6.1 IBU" if that's a vintage identifier for you.

Appearance: Careful pour yields a one inch frothy offwhite head that dissipates steadily and leaves no lacing. Pours a deep but translucent ruby red and leaves occasional dots and tight streaks of lacing.

Smell: Balsamic vinegar, fruity undertones. With time, some beautifully vibrant red fruit notes come out. Lots of development here. Gets funkier, more savory, then more deeply fruity, etc.

Taste: Creamy and oaky up front, leading to a great lactic sour and cherry hit. Lots of acetic flavor that goes well with the oak. Pretty sour; sourness lingers long and mouthpuckeringly. Great leathery red wine flavors emerge.

This beer is straightforward and delicious. Just right amount of oak influence, lots of cherry, red wine, wild ale complexity without any real abrasiveness. I've gone on more sweeping American wild ale adventures than this one, but the ride is smooth and profoundly enjoyable.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Juicy, with a tart finish. Occasional sugariness, but not bad. Often quite succulent. Perfect carbonation.

Overall: Sang Rouge is an American wild ale after my own heart. While I could go even oakier, and would love some sour cherries thrown in, otherwise it hits all the right notes for me. Red wine-like, great mouthfeel, not too acidic, flavors not too disparate but still deep and complex. Could drink this beer every day, honestly.

Reviewed from notes.

shared by imperialking to a tasting.

Murky brownish red with a tan head. Decent legs and lace. Average retention. The legs have some bright red cherry hues that appear in a swirl.

The nose is oaky, dark and woody. No big bright cherrry, raspberry, or other fresh fruit notes that make me scream in excitement. This was opened side by side with Sang Royal, and of the two, this is the less sour.

It isn't bad, but it isn't something I would want to trade for (or even order directly from Racoon Lodge with their CRAZY shipping prices!).

Certainly good enough to enjoy a glass if some one else brings it! It's certainly drinkable, but I just want more sourness....

Pours out a dark brown with cherry red highlights. It's lightly carbonated - white foam that quickly fades to a ring.

Smell is good. Initially a lot of balsamic vinegar, but that mellows a bit, and red wine makes an appearance as do some fruits - cherry mostly - maybe some other dark fruits as well.

Taste is very good - It's sour, but more of a soft, nearly lactic sour, than a super sharp acetic sour. Balsamic is again present, as are cherries. I also get some red wine (grapes and oak), a bit of apple, and a hint of sweetness to balance out the tart. It's a complex and tasty beer.

Feel is nice - despite looking flat this one is well carbonated. It's got a soft, medium bodied feel.

Overall - another delicious Cascade sour. I do, however, prefer the fruits to this one.

Poured from a 750 mL botttle into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for bringing out this treat.

Appearance: My pour has a dark burgundy color with a dark brown middle. The edges are noticeably transparent, and there is a frothy off-white collar.

Smell: There is a lot of balsamic vinegar in the nose. Sweet and sour cherries, some raisins, and some other general dark fruits.

Taste: The flavor is a lot more balanced. Nice sweet cherries start out. Some light malt hides in the back as the flavor turns tart. Sour cherries, red grapes, and some raisins all provide some nice fruit flavor. There is some balsamic tartness and a light funkiness toward the end.

Mouthfeel: The body has a sweet, full start and more of a tart and dry finish. Medium bodied with light carbonation and a softness that I don't see in too many wilds.

Overall: This feels like more of a Flanders Red to me, but I like it regardless of the sour style it is classified as.

2009 vintage? Definitely been in my cellar for a while.

A: 1 finger tan head with decent retention. The beer is a dark garnet with good clarity

S: Notes of cherry and stonefruit. A whiff of strawberry.

T: Bracingly tart and quite oaky. Cherry and plum. Lemon finish.

M: Lingers forever. Nicely carbonated.

O: On a small pour, or the initial sips, I might not say that this is the best of Cascade's beers. However it has a subtlety to it that lends it better to a full glass (or more, as I look at the rest of the bottle..). Quite an excellent beer.

Of the four cascade brews I hav had this was definitely my favorite. This beer pours a nice red color win a pretty decent head. The ammonia acetic funky and slightly oaky. The flavor is more sour than I has expected and quite enjoyable there are also some oak hints in the flavor. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodies with good carbonation. Will definitely get more when it is available.

Bottle courtesy of Shane (Hophead84) - thanks man! Served in a Darkness snifter.

A - A generous amount of lightly tan foam settles to a thin cap, leaving minimal splotches of lace. Dark ruby red body with some transparency to it when held to the light.

S - Vanilla, pie crust and graham cracker malt, oak, lactic acidity, some balsamic vinegar, and herbal and dill notes that I occasionally get from barrels aged in oak for a long time. Is there actually fruit in this? There isn't any listed on the label, but I would be easily convinced there was fruit in here.

T - Taste is more balsamic vinegar with sour cherries and berry yogurt lactic notes. Lots of oak in the finish and not as sweet as the aroma suggests. Pretty sour stuff.

M - Smooth medium body, medium carbonation tingle, dry finish but with some residual sugars and stickiness. No noticeable alcohol which is pretty impressive.

D - Not quite as good as Sang Royal, but a very good Flanders style sour. Easy to drink and something I'd gladly have on any occasion. Another solid offering from Cascade.

750ml corked and caged bottle sent to me by user mashmaster. thanks tom! drank from my duvel tulip.

A- the pour yields a murky and almost opaque dark brown colored body with a very small off white head that quickly becomes no more than a crown. a few random and tiny spots get left on the sides of my glass.

S- the nose starts off with some tart cherries and oaken barrel. after that i get some balsamic vinegar notes and other lactic tartness. no trace of barnyard funk, which is odd.

T- the taste starts out with more of the tart cherries that i could smell. traces of the barrel move in behind that and add some dryness. im still not picking up any trace of the brett induced funk which i find odd. balsamic vinegar and other lactic notes.

M- the body is a solid medium. the carbonation is a solid medium as well. nicely sour without being too puckering.

D- i liked this beer alot, but is not my favorite of the style. greatfull that i was traded one, but overall i think the amount that it took to obtain this wasnt really worth the hassle.

Bottle "shared" at the Jackie O's One Funky Afternoon. Someone had opened the bottle, poured a small bit for himself, then without saying a word plopped it on our table and walked out. We waited about 45 minutes wondering if he was going to return. Finally we decided it was in the best interest of the beer to drink it. Thanks mystery BA! My first Cascade, this was a nice compliment to all the JO's sours.

Red in color with a small greyish head with dark spice hues to it.

Lots of funk in the aroma. Tart cherry and attic/dusty must.

Both sweet and puckering with mild cinnamon flavors. A nice tasting sour.

Good strong carbonation. I would be happy to try this again with a more fresh palate, as I imagine my score could only go up.

The beer is ruby / garnet hued with a thin head and minimal lacing. The aroma brings some barnyard funk, oak, and sour cherries. The taste is bold and the beer is very enjoyable. A lot of cherry flavors really shine through. The beer has a healthy level of acidity, but isn't sharp or biting. Medium carbonation level with a lactic presence throughout, most notably in the finish. Overall, a really delicious wild ale that I would enjoy having again.

Bottled shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike, this was a big want of mine. Poured into a tulip.

a - Pours a murky reddish-amber color with a pinkish hue, one inch of fluffy white head, and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of sour cherries, funk, oak, other dark fruits, lactic notes, and some vinegar. Smell is very sour and great; lots of tart cherries.

t - Taste follows the nose; lots and lots of tart cherries and sour dark fruits, followed by oak, lactic ntoes, funk, and vinegar. Very tart and enjoyable.

m - Medium body and moderate to high carbonation.

o - Overall I thought this was a really great sour; another great one from Cascade. I lvoed the tart cherries and dark fruits that dominated this one, and would love to have it again.

Beer is hazy with nearly no head, reddish in color but approaching brown. Minimal carbonation.

Nice aroma, lots of oak, mild tannic, cherry, bright acetic, nice lactic.

Beer tastes like awesome. The acid balanced with this late tartness and bright acetic. The lactic creaminess is nice as well. The body of the beer is great with a nice level of carbonation, I thoroughly enjoyed this beer. Truly great.

Huge, huge thanks to rmalinowski4 for sending this bottle out my way in the Generosity BIF. This had been a long-time want. Served in a Captain Lawrence tulip.

Pours a tawny-red color with a small tan head and a bit of spotty lacing on the way down. The nose brought forward quite a bit of earth and oak along with berry character and some leather. The flavor killed it with strong cherry and dark fruits plus oak and a brisk acidity. Nice leather presence there as it warmed. Heavy acidity came through in the feel, which had a medium body and fizzy carbonation with a really dry finish. Fantastically solid brew and one I was very glad to try. Cheers.

Bottle: Poured a deep clear reddish color ale with a nice thick bubbly head with good retention and light lacing notes. Aroma of sour oak notes with treat cherries and light acidic finish is quiet enjoyable. Taste is a very nice mix between some tart notes with definitive oak traces and a light acidic finish. Sour cherries notes are easily noticeable. Great complex sour from Cascades yet again though not necessarily different then some of there other beers.

750ml bottle thanks to Jedwards, appreciate it! I split this with a buddy and we were both surprised at the quality after drainpouring a bourbonic plague a couple weeks back. Nice dark red, almost brown. Has a very nice smell like funk, sour and cherries? The taste is a nice sour red almost like a flander's red but not too sour. Nice stuff, I'd buy this again if it weren't so costly.

8.06% ABV, Serve at 45-50 F

Thanks, yet again, to Sweemzander for another tick! He's bustin' out the big guns!

A - Dark ruby brown looks almost black in the tulip. It's topped by a loose tan head. Low retention and spotty lace are left behind.

S - Lactic sour aroma with a beautifully complimentary oak wood scent in the background. Light vinegar sourness and smooth brown malt accompany.

T - Aside from the intrusive off-flavor that lingers in the back and plagues the brew, the malt profile and vinegar sourness are pretty nice in this one. Mellow amber malts. Flanders Red-like.

M - Good mild level of sourness and moderately high carbonation with a touch of lactic acidity.

O - Strong acid/sour profile towards the end of the sample but the off-flavor that lingers in the taste really kills what's going for this brew.

750 ml bottle into a snifter and Duvel glass. Dregs of course to my Flanders Red brew. Got this on my trip to Portland March 2010.

Appearance is a dark red mahogany color with a nice head on top of it, really frothy looking, and it sticks around as well. Really nice lacing.

Aroma is perfect Flanders Red - cherry pie, a light touch of balsamic vinegar, and a light note of oak.

Taste is just as good - it starts out tart from the beginning with strong cherry pie then the oak comes on strong with the vinegar only slightly in there as it should be. Finishes dry and sour.

Mouthfeel is really creamy and retains a certain fullness to it that I like.

Overall a really amazing sour. It was good before but with an extra year on it, it's now even better. Cascade makes some of the best American Sours that I've had coming in only second to Russian River. I want more.
