I missed this last time it popped up in Philly, so I grabbed a bottle as soon as I saw it on the shelves. 750ML 2011 project into a Brasserie d' achouffe and Rodenbach Grand Cru tulips to keep a steady clean pour going.
A lot of fizz and sounds coming out when poured from the bottle, Kriek pours out a muddy red brown shaded color that is pretty dark looking overall. Brown up front, red tints towards the light, muddled, some off tan colored foam on the sides of the glass, not forming a cap. Some bubbles rising through the cloudy beer, some activity.
Cascade Kriek smells like sweet cherry with some Jolly rancher appeal. The time spent in oak shows up with some vanilla surrounding the deep cherry scents rising up the nose. Some faint malt presence underneath with a small hint of cocco. Wet wood and some lactic quality is dead center.
I am a believer, this is truly sour, not 2007 100% Kriek lambic sour, but very tart with lactic appeal surrounded by a sturdy red ale laced with sour cherry flavor. Again some Jolly Rancher pops in the middle with the oak/vanilla laying nicely in the middle. The cherry flavor lasts long and this is strikingly similar to Red Poppy and I get some berry flavor reminding me of consecration in a way.
Feel is bursting with tartness all around the mouth, swish this around your mouth and feel the full effect, totally worth it. Missing some of the sweetness and vinegar from standard Belgian flanders, but that does not bother me, this is a nice change of pace for the style for me. Body is medium and has some life with bubbles. I drank the whole bottle, it was nice. I don't see this one as a long term aging beer, perhaps a year or so, but don't stretch it. At the level of sourness this has now, what's the point.

2011 Project
A: Plum red in color, the beer yields no head whatsoever. Bubbles do race through what otherwise looks to be a thick body. 3.5
S: The aroma is oaky and dank, but is bolster by an assault of sweet cherries. It certainly doesn't smell like it's going to produce the spine tingling acidity as the apricot version, but it does smell good. 4
T: This kriek tastes much more sweet than I thought it would, but the beer certainly brings it. A deeply enjoyable blend of oak, sweet cherries, slight tartness, but no hit of alcohol. The crisp, clean aftertaste is full of cherries, as well. 4.5
MF: Medium body with a lower than average carbonation. The beer makes my mouth water and keep me coming back for more, seemingly having a never-ending drinkability. 4
O: Really a phenomenally blended beer that lived up to the hype. I didn't give it as high a rating because I wanted it to be more sour, but the cherries stepped up in a big way. You won't go wrong here. 4
