I visited Lambic on a recent holiday to Mauritius and found it to be by far the best beer based establishment I have ever visited. It is a beer store, beer bar and top class restaurant all in one.

To my knowledge this is the only "beer store" on the whole of the African continent. The shop stocks over 130 beers, including beers from 6/7 trappist breweries (they have Westy's on display but not for sale) and beers from many other great European breweries (Andescher, Duval, St Bernardus etc.). Most people reading this will be thinking "I know lots of stores that stock more beers than this" but one needs to remember that in Africa a store that stocks 10 different lagers has a big selection...
As far as pricing goes, I found most of the beers to be really well priced (a Rochefort 6 cost me about US$3 - pretty good when I pay US$ 2.5 for a can of Guinness in South Africa). There were a few exception to this, Cantillon Kriek and Cuvée Van De Keizer Blauw were both a tad pricey.

Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to meet the owner of the store (though based on numerous email conversations he seems very knowledgeable and immensely passionate about beer), but I found the manager very helpful and knowledgeable regarding all beers in the store.

It seemed as though all the beers available in the shop were also available at the beer bar, most served in the appropriate glass. The bar also serves over 40 different whiskeys and over 40 different teas.

We unfortunately did not have time to eat at the restaurant; however the menu seemed to be top class and very well priced. Items of note that I recall included Aberdeen Angus steak, wild boar roasted with cherry beer, roasted deer with St Bernardus Pater 6 and chocolate with raspberry beer mousse.

I Purchased about US$200 worth of beer from the store and all of it was top class, not a single bad bottle.

This is a top class establishment and I highly recommend that anyone traveling to the island pays them a visit.

Currently on holidays in Mauritius, and I was pleased to hear about a craft beer place in Port Louis, the capital. It took some finding but the directions on their website helped.

The surrounding area isn't much, very commercial, but once inside, it is like an oasis from the hustle and bustle from downtown Port Louie. The owner has went out of his way to create a belgian beer cafe style with wooden tables, chairs, and bar (reminded me of a great cafe in Antwerp). The service was good, a lot of the staff are very knowledgeable about the beer (I was warned about the sourness of the gueze!). You can sit outdoors in a sheltered beer garden, or opt for the A/C indoors (as we did - Mauritius is very hot!). Our table was situated near a glass covered cabinet of ~500 different beers (all empty, good to see!)

The selection of beer was great (considering it is Mauritius), about 30 varieties including the local Phoenix, American (sierra nevada and samuel adams amongst others), english (suffolk vintage ale) and many belgian. I had a St Bernardus Pater, Boon Gueze and a nice locally brewed (next door) Flying Dodo Wheat IPA. The food selection was a little bit narrower, but was excellent quality. The portions were small, more like fine dining. I had a tender locally cooked Wild Boar with kriek based sauce, my wife had a very succulent Aussie steak cooked in a St Bernardus Tripel based sauce. The prices for a main were reasonable, between $US15 to $US25.

Tip: don't try to drink too many beers in the restaurant - there is an internal beer store where you can get many fine belgian beers (e.g. Duvel, Chimay, Tripel Karmeliet etc etc) for less than half the price of the restaurant. The price of the beers in the beer store were very reasonable, compared to similar type of beers that I could get in Australia. Beers were generally around $3-$5US.

If your ever in Port Louis, and tired of the macro-brewed euro lagers, then this place is a must!!!
