Whoever said that fantastically brewed, complex and digestible Belgian ale must come from the Trappist abbey has obviously not drank in Ohio. The Rockmill brewers are quietly putting out some of the best Belgian flavors in the U.S. One sip of their Dubbel shows why!

Its pours with the high and rocky foamstance to nearly topple the chalice. Its malty-sweet scent starts with succulent brown sugar and maple but turn peppery and vinous ahead of the first sip. Its steely caramel taste has the essence of of maple and toffee but without such sweetness.

The beer's complexity blooms across the middle where it seems that rum-soaken fig, raisin, date apple and grape bring out the beer's sweetness while a balance of black peppercorn, pecan husk, fennel and merlot-type acidity offset the beer's malty tone.

Its high effervescence lifts the malt sweetness with ease and forces a quick finish, relegating much of its complexity to be appreciated in aftertaste and texture. Champagne bubby highlights its peppery bite, woodish hop bitterness, and tangy vinous acidity, and brandyish warmth.

Pours a hazy amber with ruby hues and a fluffy off-white head. The nose is dark fruits, caramel malts and a touch of spicy yeast. The taste follows suit with loads of sweetness from the caramel malts leading the way. The dark fruits are more hidden here, sitting towards the back end. The finish is a touch spicy, and then slightly bitter. Overall, it's a decent dubbel; very straightforward and enjoyable.

Their stuff has always worked well enough for me. Not mind blowing but not terrible. Dark fruits and caramel are there with a light peppery Belgian spice and some herbal grape.

Damn, it's like they made a better version of Chimay dubbel. The flavor has creamy vanilla and slightly tart cherry and earthy caramel. The aroma has more bread crust and cola, a touch of apple. Very drinkable and satisfying.

Quick notes:

Decent Dubbel aroma, with dark fruit and some spices. A bit of caramel malt aroma.

Flavor is a little hard to pin down. There's some dark fruit (prunes and plums), some more bread-like malt, and a fair amount of dryness and spice. Decent yeast presence. Balance is lacking, as is any aspect of the profile that really grabs my attention and makes me want to take another sip.

A little thin on the feel, while also being pretty hot for 8%. Dubbels aren't typically a style that hide ABV well, so I'm not holding it against this beer too much, but it isn't making the overall experience any better.

Ultimately, not a great beer, and not a particularly good Dubbel. Very few American brewers have managed to pin down this style. Definitely a drinkable beer, but certainly not something I'd seek out, especially if I'm actually in the mood for a Dubbel.

A: The beer is clear reddish amber in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high light beige colored head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of fruits are present in the nose—pears and plums seem to stand out in particular—along with some hints of candi sugar and Belgian yeast.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of grapes, pears and plums along with notes of Belgian yeast and hints of candi sugar. Only a slight amount of sweetness is perceptible.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer was rather easy to drink for a dubbel because any traces of alcohol were well hidden from the taste and it didn't have that heavy of a body since the carbonation helps to lighten things up.
