poured from tap into unibroue tulip at Kickbacks in Jacksonville, FL. Big foamy pour over a deep burnt orange color. Nice hoppy sweet malt piney aroma.
Taste is malty sweetness..[piney but is balanced by the sweetness. Tastes of sweet malt, slight dried fruit and toffee, and hops. I would actually call this a strong ale; not a DIPA. Its way too sweet and way to strong...but its damn tasty! whatever you call it, its great

Served in a pint glass at The Local Miami.
A- Pours a medium amber with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains decently before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Melty lacing slides quickly down the glass.
S- Mildly pungent hop aroma with notes of ripe tropical fruit and a hint of malt sweetness to back it.
T- Moderate to heavy bitterness with lots of grapefruit, orange and lemon notes. Very smooth after multiple sips with a not-so-lingering hop bite. Some grass but the overall profile is decidedly sweet and fruity as opposed to vegetal and earthy. Oh, and the alcohol is only slightly noticeable.
M- Dry and tight with medium carbonation and a body that's on the lighter side.
O- Definitely Terrapin's best IPA.

good. a terrapin beer that i like. sorry but i have to mention their big hoppy monster is meh fresh, and God forbid you have that beer old, that was one of the most disgusting beers ive had, ive had better bmc than that mess. then again, probably my own fault for not noticing, i believe that bottle was dated.
enjoyed this immediately after my KBS, needed somthing huge and hoppy after that.
good looking beer, yellow to gold, maybe orange hued, sometimes i dont notice color correctly. looked real nice in a pilsner glass. big sweet fruity hoppy aroma and taste, i dont mind the big sweetness at all, though i get that some do. smooth and satisfying, big flavor, big abv, perfect this thursday afternoon.
recommended. glad i got this one fresh.

Served on-tap at Al's of Hampden. Another hoppy beer from Terrapin eh, lets see how this one turns out...
A - Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a nice one finger tall white head leaving small wisps of lace down parts of the glass.
S - Smells of tropical fruits - mostly grapefruit - and some pine resin. Also hints of caramel malt and some booze once the hops die down a bit.
T - Starts off with some dulled citric hop bitterness quickly giving way to a mix of sweet caramel malt, dulled tropical fruit rind and some booze, which only grows stronger as it sits in the glass. Finish is a mix of sweetness, hop bitterness and booze burn, lingering on the pallet for quite some time after consumption.
M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. The hops are fading and the malt is growing but all things considered a pretty decent feel.
O - Not too bad really. The smell was really nice but the taste was going a little stale. Worth the shot for sure.

On tap at the Fridge, Lancaster PA
12 oz pour transferred into a British Imperial Nonic at my request (thank you Miranda)
Pours a nice ¼” head which rapidly reduces to a thin film.
Brilliant deep yellow straw color with some short lived lacing.
A distinct aroma of malt, followed by mostly citrus hops, and crusty bread yeast. Quite enjoyable.
Crisp entry on the palate of delicious malt, followed by wonderfull citrus hops, and a full mouth feel combined with fine small bubble carbonation. Delicious!
Long crisp finish of hop dominated malt. The hop oils stick to your mouth. Very enjoyable.
Quite a delicious DIPA, but that being said there is nothing here to rise above the din.
Recommended.

Had this one at the brewery the day after it was released during one of their tour sessions! Served from tap into a Terrapin Hopzilla shaker. Poured golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing through the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, marijuana, marijuana hop, citrus, earth, and earth hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, earth, citrus, citrus hop, marijuana, earth hop, marijuana hop, and fruit. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I was really surprised at how nice and hoppy this one was while still not being abrasive to the palate. There was a nice touch of both sweetness and bitterness so the palate didn't get overwhelmed. Honestly reminded me of fresh Pliny if I am completely honest with just a touch of earthiness. Definitely worth trying and really glad that they brought this one back in bottles.

An 8oz draft at the Porter during the Terrapin Takeover on 5/21/11
A - A cloudy light orange hue. One finger white head. Sticky lace all over the glass. Beautiful!
A - Citrus hops, grapefruit and piny hops. The citrus hops give off lots of sweet floral notes. Orange, pineapple. Piny hops also prevalent, giving a nice grapefruit smell.
T - Grapefruit and citrus. High ABV is hidden. Big hop kick at the end. Sweet flavors from the malts. So well balanced!
M - Medium carbonation, nice mouth feel. Creamy. Very crisp! Light bodied.
O - An amazing double IPA. Up there with the Hopslam and the Majaraja as one of my favorites. Very drinkable as well, as the high ABV is well hidden and it is so well balanced. Not too bitter, which often occurs in Double/Imperial IPA's. So glad that the Porter offered what I am sure is one of the last kegs, as I have been searching for this brew for awhile.

Had on-tap in a snifter at a Terrapin/Left Hand tasting event at Mellow Mushroom in Brandon, FL
A - Color and translucency of orange-blossom honey. Very little head that dissipates quickly into a ring of lace.
S - Citrus forward, with moderate alcohol and slight resin. No mistaking that this is an IPA.
T - Starts with smooth alcohol, which makes way to clean malt. Follows through with tropical notes -- sweet, but not cloying. Long finish with peach/citrus bitterness.
M - Medium-light body; very smooth with mild carbonation. Alcohol towards the back end.
D - Extremely drinkable for an ABV near 11 -- reminds me of some hop-heavy Lagunitas offerings in that respect. I would be prone to over-imbibing on this one.

Tried Hopzilla on-tap @ TapHouse in Norfolk, VA. Body was a cloudy light orange with a faint one-finger smooth head. I immediately smelled the beer as soon as it was set in front of me. This has an overwhelmingly tropical fruit scent to it. The scents are more specifically of mango, papaya, and pineapple, along with some pine. This was definitely one of the most aromatic beers I've ever had and it smelled deliscious.
Upon tasting Hopzilla, it really did not let me down at all. This is a stellar brew that tastes sweet with the tropical fruits mentioned and also has a strong juicy hop flavor that is bold but not abrasive on the tongue. There is a slight pine tar taste in the back but it is mostly hidden by the overall flavor of the beer.
Hopzilla has a nice, even carbonation and a pleasant but sticky aftertaste to it. Despite having a high ABV, the alcohol is very well hidden and was only faintly noticed in the back of the throat. Sticky lacing on glass. This was an amazing beer to have on-tap and I highly recommend this to anyone into the style. Very well done.

A - Pours with a small head of white foam on top of a very hazy, golden body. The foam settles slowly and leaves moderate lace. This beer looks oddly similar to a belgian wit especially considering how different the flavor is.
S - A very strong aroma of citrus hops with an emphasis on grapefruit. Light hints if orange and mango in the background barely manage to sneak past the grapefruit. There is some bready malt hiding in there a well, with just a hint if toasted grain.
T - Resinous, pone and grapefruit hops up front with lots of sweet, malty sugar. Some bitterness begins to creep in towards the middle but is still balanced by the sugary malt and overshadowed by the wave of hop flavor. The beer finishes with investing bitterness that begins to reveal smoky, mustard like hop flavors that I would normally associate with a much darker beer. Lingering bitterness and sugary fruit notes from the interplay of malt and hops.
M - A moderately thick body, moderate carbonation, and a sweet finish.
D - the aroma on this ber is fantastic, and while the flavor is nearly equally hoppy, it comes across as a bit too sweet. While a good dose of sugar is naturally required to balance this level of hop intensity, this is somewhat excessive. The sweetness robs the hop flavor of some of its intensity by making it taste kind of like candied, dried fruit. Still, the hop aroma is spectacular, and it is a very nice DIPA overall. It is reminiscent of Avery Maharaja, thoughif it was a bit dryer, it would be even better.

11 ounce goblet - $7.50 at The Fred in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Appearance: Dispensed a well-clouded, near opaque, dark orange-gold body with a film of off-white fizz.
Smell: A decent malt presence, with some notes of simple sliced bread, almond butter, and caramel, though we're mainly here for the hops, with a penetrating liveliness when it comes to the myriad of fruit scents - loads of citrus, tropical, and even some orchard fruit. Light waft of booze as well.
Taste: Lightly bready malts in the fore with sweet traces of caramel and marzipan. A lavish abundance of fruity flavors - pineapple, pear, lychee, tangerine, and lemon, all melting together to impart a boutique pâte de fruit character. As for the 100+ IBUs, the bitterness was definitely bold and brash, but it was never displeasingly abrasive. A pinch of sugar, then back to the bitterness assimilating some peppered alcohol tones. Bittersweet, warming, still so fruity finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus. Medium-light carbonation. Some noted chewiness to the mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Full, flavorful and packed with fruity complexities. I enjoyed this one. As for the drinkability, the sheer tastiness overrode the bitterness and alcohol, so maybe that's why the remainder of that particular evening is a tad hazy.

Had on tap at Smokin Joe's for the Big Pour Event.
A-pours a deep golden yellow color with a thin white head.
S-huge nose of all hops, not much malt at all and I'm a fan. tons of sweet ripe grapefruit and tangerine (tropical fruity hops with littler bitterness), notes of pine needles and more fruity citrus.
T-the taste has some earthy malt body but very light. its a hop explosion, more pine than the nose, very herbal dry pine, notes of citrus, more citrus, tons of tangerine and ripe bitter grapefruit and all the citrus flavors associated.
M-this has a medium body that is lively on the tongue, semi dry crisp finish.
D-big time hop bomb, it is singular but the citrus and pine flavors meld extremely well together making a citrus blast with hop balance and extreme drinkability.

A: Yellow Orange with nice white inch thick head.
S: Floral and Citrus bombardment. Smelled great, which really lent to the taste.
T: I was impressed with this. My wife is huge on the Rye squared, but this takes it in my opinion. Great mixture of floral and grapefruit with a nice complex malt backing to mask the alcohol. Very very good DIPA. I think this is my favorite Terrapin.
M: Nice and crisp like a DIPA should be.
D: Taste wise I could drink these all night. At 10.8% it would be a short but fun night.

Comes out of the tap a beautiful hazy golden amber with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled white head. Epic aroma is hoppy in the extreme - it is like smelling a freshly cut pine tree. Flavor is as hoppy as a bullfrog on angel dust, and has hints of grapefruit and orange. Double IPA, hell - this is more like a quadruple IPA! Edgy, ragged texture is quite fizzy and leaves a hoppy and citrus finish. If you like hoppy beers, this one is for you!

12oz bottle into a snifter.
Pours a hazy orangish-brown with a one finger white head that fades away pretty quickly. A fairly solid white ring is left around the top of the beer with some splotchy lacing.
The aroma is filled with tropical fruit and grapefruit, oranges, and pineapple. Not a whole lot of malt but the juicy hops more than make up for it.
Huge hop burst upon tasting with a big rush of tropical fruit much like the aroa. Grapefruit, mango , pineapple, and orange are predominant. There is some nice biscuit malt character in the background and just a quick whiff of alcohol about halfway through. Bitterness is quite high but does a great job of counteracting the sweetness from the malt. Mouthfeel is slick and fairly dry for the style with a very balanced finish.
Overall, an extremely well done IIPA. Alcohol is very well hidden and the mouthfeel is not overly sweet as often happens with these beers. Great hop and malt balance and really quite drinkable for the strength. A nice beer.

This is an interesting dipa in that it's not trying to blow my mind by blowing away my palate. Thick flavor profile with a slightly noticeable boozy tone, but not as much as I would expect for a 10.7% beer. A nice drinker. I could certainly deal with slightly less of a boozy tone, less prevalent malts, and a higher hop influence. It's a nice enough drinker though.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into an Upland pint glass.
A: Pours a hazy deep gold, forms a one-finger white head over medium visible carbonation.
S: Hops! Tropical fruit, dank, citrus, and a bit of pine. Background of light biscuit or cracker malts.
T: Follows the aroma in notes, but this is closer to balanced than expected from the nose. Hop flavors of citrus, tropical, grapefruit/pineapple and dank grassy come through without big bitterness - I assume this had lots of late hop additions. A mild spicy/onion hop character shows up near the end, with only mild bitterness in the hang.
M: Medium body, low alcohol presence, decent carbonation sensation.
O: Quite enjoyable, but nothing to make it stand out. Certainly paled in comparison to the Stone Enjoy By I drank following this bottle. But I wouldn't turn down another.

A--A nice cloudy, golden appearance, but with weak head and lacing.
S--Smells kind of one-dimensional and overly malty. Not at all appetizing or aesthetically pleasing like the best, complex DIPAs.
Taste--Ditto; one dimensional, boringly sweet. Very little hop taste and very little sense of composition.
M--Meh.
Perhaps the least satisfying $13 per 4 pack I have ever spent. This beer is a FAIL.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served upwards of 55º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a medium thick off white head of a creamy froth consistency. Retention is average. Body color is a pale golden amber with a high clarity and ample carbonation. Lacing is thin and spotty. A pretty good appearance, on the lighter end of the DIPA spectrum and slightly underwhelming head quality. 3.5
(Smell) Mildly roasted caramel malt base with a moderate sweetness, followed through with an herbal, earthy and spicy hop aroma blend with citrus undertones. The hop character is front-and center and the malt profile is well balanced to pair. Potency is a touch shallow even at warmer temperatures but it's a minor complaint to this beer. 4
(Taste) Here's an unexpected twist. Earthy hops and booze jump forward to the front. It's a very bizarre hop character with lots of yeast character in tow- expect bananas, bubblegum, peppery spices and herbal tones to gel with the more predictable hop suspects of citrus and pine. Malt character provides a subtle undertone with a moist sweetness and a relatively clean finish, aside from a growing ethanol and clove finish that favorably gains with the drink. As I've been having my drinks at warmer and warmer temperatures recently, these have been showing their true depths of character. It's not the most accessible DIPA out there- it's got it's rough edges, but I don't often find IPAs that have this much yeast expression as they do in the hops, and it makes for an adventurous flavor combination to say in the least. Mildly moist finish contributes even more to a burdened palate, probably the biggest subjective groan I can offer this beer. 4
(Mouthfeel) Smooth, mildly heavy with a touch of residual caramel syrup thickness, a moderate hop bitterness and a mildly peppery, generally well-balanced finish, neither too dry nor moist. Carbonation is just enough to give it some air. Body is medium/heavy for a DIPA, and just shy of heavy overall. It's a pretty loaded and filling compilation of flavors, with nearly all parts of a beer doing their full job. Any more complicated and it could wind up a hot mess. Speaking of heat, there's a notable booze factor here due to a relatively clean, strictly-focused-on-sweets malt profile. The mouthfeel hits the mark for carbonation, but I always question the validity of heavy body profiles, and combined with a wide open alcohol profile, it's certainly a one-and-done type of beer whether you love it or not. It's one heavy sucker. 3.5
(Overall) I'm going to give DIPAs a run for their character in warmer temperatures from now on, this one has graciously intensified in the upper 50ºs. It's one heavy-hitting beer in all factors, with a heavy, complex hop profile and a matching bold yeast background to boot, consider your palate nearly wrecked after gracefully sipping this one down. It may not be simple enough for those who like an accessible, quaffable double IPA a-la Hopslam, but this beer hardly shames the DIPA name, and certainly fits its own merits via it's overwhelming flavor ferocity. Recommended upwards of 55º warmth for the ballsier DIPA drinkers only. 3.75

A: Hazy orange colored beer with a small off-white head. Retention is low, but OK for this big of a beer; lacing is very attractive.
S: The citrus and piney hops play well with the caramel malts for a dreamy aroma.
T: As in the smells, there is a great balance in the taste, with pine and citrus hop bitterness kept in check by a big maltiness from the Maris Otter. Also has a pleasing warming of alcohol.
M: The mouthfeel is thick and chewy with a medium-high amount of carbonation on the tongue. The finish has both strong malt notes and big hoppy bitterness.

12oz bottle, 2013 vintage, from excellent BA trader QuentinCall.
Honey-gold elixir poured into Avery pint glass. 2-finger, thick, white head, plenty of lacing.
Wow, nice hops! Mangoes and oranges all over the place.
Honey, citrus hops, malt backbone. Alcohol comes through at the end.
Medium to full body, smooth, nice.
Well done DIPA. Could really sniff this one all day. The hops are sweet and give this one a bump.

A: very nice dark orange in color, created about 1/2 fingers worth of head retention. moderate carbonation and nice lacing
S: as expected, huge hops blast the nose, with some tropical fruits such as mango and subtle peach. there is a nice sweet malt backbone holding this one together and i'm not getting any alcohol. nice
T: big hops up complimented by a big sugary malt sweetness that masks all alcohol. orange peel, mango, and a slight touch of mango also come through here creating a decent amount of complexity as well as balance.
M: lighter than what I was expecting to be honest. but it leaves a nice sugary sweetness on the palate along with some hops which is pretty nice
O: definitely worthy of a try. i really enjoyed how the sugary cuts out the alcohol, because I could easily kick back 2-3 of these. it has a nice flavor profile, just wish a bit more fruits would come forward in the taste.

Pours a pure amber, clear body, head just under an inch.
Smells pretty dank, lots of peach, some mandarin orange, some sweet malt.
Taste is dank, has a little peach again, some orange, some grapefruit maybe, lots of fruit but not too bitter, fairly sweet with a big malt backbone, pretty spicy hop character too.
Good carbonation, fairly thick body, not as dry as I like my IPAs but pretty drinkable.
Good beer! Big fruit character, fairly hoppy, pretty malty too which isn't my thing but this is really good. Glad to finally get to try this!

S: Juicy fruit character. Over ripe peach and mango. Some herbal notes. Sweet malts there as well.
