Beer review from BA Mag Nov 2007.

There are not a whole lot of rye beers on the market, and Terrapin brews two with this pale ale being the smaller brother of Rye Squared.

The head survives a few sips and drops a patch blanket of lace on the glass, clear and bright with a dark golden color. The nose is very aromatic with toasted, pale caramel and spicy rye malt with a complex hop that throws herbal and pine notes into the mix. The smoothness is there with just enough crispness to carry the medium body along. Big on malt sweetness, with toasted bread, honey, caramel and grassy flavors. Hops are right there from the start to balance with a solid but modest hop bitterness. The hop flavor on the other hand brings complexity to the table with herbal, floral, soft citric and piney notes. Spiciness of the rye helps to balance as well. Semisweet finish with a pleasant lingering floral hop flavor.

More body than we expected which is not a bad thing at all; this beer has character to it and shows that it is not one of your run-of-the-mill boring pale ales.

On tap @ Taco Mac - Decatur, GA

A- Bright copper hue, great clarity shines well ... thin but sticky lace.

S- Mild spicy tartness from the ale-like characteristics and rye malt.

T&M- Crisp and spicy up-front, layer of malt sweetness with a lingering hop bitterness. Rye character is mild yet prevalent throughout the palate.

What can I say ... balanced and very drinkable. A session rye ale for sure.

12oz brown bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy, but bright, amber, topped with a decent 2 finger thick foamy head that settles to a respectable clinging lace. Touch of sweetness in the nose, with a lightly sour/rye character, and floral pith. Soft mouthfeel, light-bodied, with a touch malt body. Gentle sweetness, light hoppiness and phenols from the rye. Pithy, with a tea and bready linger. Flavor becomes quite malty and even sweeter as the beer warms. Grainy tannins in the finish, not overly pleasant ones. Balanced, but not overly impressive.

Pours yellowish orange with a decent white laced head. Looks like a fair amount of carbonation. The smell is pretty weak. Nothing too outstanding, in fact for a Pale Ale I was expecting more of hoppy presence. The taste is pretty mellow and smooth. Nothing really jumps out at you but then again nothing really really bad hits you either. I'd say this is actually a very good session type beer that you can guzzle a few down with ease and get some decent taste too. So pretty much I'd get this again for those hot summer days where you just want to enjoy a better than ok beer throughout the afternoon.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours out a nice gold color, about a finger off white head, sticks around for a while.
S - Not a real pungent aroma, but you get some rye, a little floral hop, and some very light caramel.
T - A nice balance of rye that goes well with a nice clean bite of some floral and grassy hop flavors. You definitely get some caramel malt but very light.
M - A tad clingy and somewhat creamy texture, but it finishes very nice.
O - This is a solid RyePA and wouldnt mind having again.

A - A bright clear orange yellow hue with a 1/4 inch of sticky white head. Seems to stick around for a while.
S - Not much in the smell, faint grapefruit hops, bready malts, and some spicy rye.
T - Quite refreshing the rye is subtle yet dry enough to add a level of spice to the hops. They are semi bitter, balanced with the pale malts, and a touch of caramel and sugar sweetness keeps it from being too hoppy. Not a bad pale.
M - Light to medium, on par with the style, enjoyable.

Overall I am surprised I never had this one but picking it up for a dollar possibly old it's quite a tasty pale ale. Worth picking up.

aroma is sweet and malty and lightly citrus.

appearance is golden/copper color with a nice thick head that stays persistent throughout.

easy drinking super suitable for summer days and a beautiful use of rye in the midst of the flavor. peachy, sweet, malty, & spicy to even out the malt and hoppy flavor characteristics. some citrus and pine but finishes clean and dry. I feel the rye is noticeable in this beer witch is a welcoming surprise. enjoyable!
