Tyler's tap room Durham. Solid black pour with a small cream colored head. Disappeared pretty quickly, with just a little bit of lacing. Very nice chocolate, espresso aromas. Taste is like a lightly carbonated mocha late. Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and mocha accenting. Lactose just barely present near the end. Roasty bitter espresso finish. Glass was empty before I knew what happened. This stuff is excellent, really not sure it qualified as a milk stout, more like a mild double stout. Really reminded me of the Bell's Java stout.

Excited to try this long time want. Really enjoy Left Hand's milk stout and I hear good things about Terrapin, so this one is right up my alley. Not sure what to expect from a 7% milk stout with two and a half years on it. We'll see I guess. Thanks again Stakem for hooking me up with this one!

From a bomber into a snifter
Brew Two 2009
Collaboration with Left Hand Brewing

APPEARANCE: A dark brown pour yields a one finger, medium looking, dark tan head with good retention. Black body and medium carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a ring and good wisp on top. A splotchy wisp remains to the end and leaves some dots of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Decent nose still. Roasted coffee and espresso come out first, then some sweet cream, vanilla, milk chocolate and caramel notes. A slight roasted touch shows through as well. Nose is quite nice, though it’s really mild at this point. Perhaps it was more impressive in its younger years.

TASTE: Doesn’t quite have it any more. This has definitely faded quite a bit at this point. Flavor is very lacking up front, with perhaps a light hint of roasted malts and caramel sweetness, but not much at all. Flavor comes out more after the swallow, with caramel and vanilla cream sweetness mostly, though some light roasted notes and stale coffee are there as well. Not all that impressive really, and very, very mild. Unimpressive aftertaste of light, stale coffee, a hint of bitter chocolate and some sweet, creamy milk sugar notes linger on the palate. It’s not off-putting or anything, but it’s got to be a faint shadow of its former self at this point. Very little coffee or espresso, which were still present in the nose somewhat, and simply too mild and unimpressive overall. Too bad we can’t all taste it fresh any more.

PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Slightly lighter on the palate, but creamy enough still. Goes down fine and finishes slightly dry on the palate. Could use a touch more weight, but it’s fine otherwise.

OVERALL: What a disappointment. If I'm honest though, I kind of expected this. Medium ABV milk stouts aren't the best candidates for aging. Mild aromas, less than mild flavors, and any hint of coffee was somewhat stale. I could certainly drink it just fine, but it just wasn’t anything worth even thinking about. That said, it would be nice if Terrapin and Left Hand got together for a second round of this one. Though I was never able to taste it fresh, I certainly taste remnants of its former glory; this was probably a great beer when just brewed. Right now, unfortunately, it is a faded and relatively boring beer. Really glad to have had the chance to try this long time want, but at this point, it’s not at all worth hunting down. If you’ve got a bottle, do something with it, as it’s well past its prime. Thanks again for the trade Stakem. Appreciate the chance to try this one.

2009 - Brew Two

A - beautiful dark pour, somewhat similar to a guiness; with a half inch thick fluffy head...that quickly vanishes

S -coffee - and quick. It is there, 2 years later!! Coco, sweet sugars, but coffee. Can not wait to taste this blend!!

T- Expresso immediately hits the taste buds....makes wanna actually try an iced coffee [something I thought I'd never say]... nibs of coco, hints of sweet candied sugars. Very pleasant.

M - A little lighter than a Medium bodied beer - if that makes sense....not as creamy as I thought it'd be, but still very pallatable.

0 - Great beer! Great project! Two Great breweries!!
