The top looking like so much brown lava, atop the darkest of nights. It disappears in the tepid black liquid, the reflection, as from oil, glaring the colours back at you.
And we dance.
The colours spin around us, the odd shapes and sounds and nightmares one sees at these, the beauty contrasted with the hideous. Whirling about through the dense fog and dazzling lights, catching glimpses of spectres and goblins and fair maidens and zombies... and the blackness seems impenetrable.
And we breathe.
The aromas of espresso for those who desire to remain here all night, in this morbid gaiety of demons frolicking with nuns, of tigresses leaping alongside skeletons of dead warriors... The espresso aromas waft, and along with them the bourbon, spilling upon the suits of armour and the feather boas and dripping to the trampled floor. The great bearded dwarf has not minded his axe, a liter of stout crashes to the floor, and the burnt grain marries with the espresso and bourbon and chocolate milk and black dirt that was tracked in by the giant bunny's fur paws.
And we drink.
The delectable stout is as dark as the night, as bitter as the espresso, as sweet as the chocolate. Creamy and thick, with little effervescence, just enough to carry the astringency on the finish to it's warm, bitter close.
And we sing. We make merry. We embrace the morbidity of this sordid holiday, and we mock the Evil that spawned this present darkness. Witches and warlocks we are, dark artists, extravagant, we laugh at death and we embrace the strangers as they shuffle in, for we know not who may be behind the masks. We know not who. The real and true axe murderer could be right here in our midst. He could know where your gun is hiding in your drawer. He could come in amidst the deafening revelry, come in, silently, calmly, unhurriedly. Everyone is certain that they would know him if only he would remove his mask. everyone is certain that they have only to address him and they will hear a friendly voice. Everyone is certain that even if they themselves are unacquainted with the man, he must be someone's friend, for It is only in the movies that serial killers abduct from house-parties. Only in the movies do young women go missing on nights such as these. Only in the movies is Evil as present. You watch to feel the thrill of terror, to see others tortured, it is all in the spirit of the holiday. You watch as the unthinkable happens. But of course, it is only in the movies. The man who knocks on your door tonight... he will undoubtedly be your friend. Of course. Ignore the fact that the axe is made of steel and not plastic. You have nothing about which to worry. You are safe.

Happy Halloween.

12oz bottle with the Terrapin turtle in a chef outfit with a spatula and a frosty glass of beer in his hands. In front of him is a pan of fresh baked cookies and a steaming pot of coffee. To the far left is a description of the beer and to the right is the Government warning and a vintage year. This bottle is from 2012. This Georgia beer was poured into a Peg's Cantina snifter.

This coffee beer poured a straight up roasted coffee black color. It was one of those solid black colors where light had problems shining through it. I held it up to the light and all I saw was a reflection of myself. You can even hold a flashlight to this beer and the light will bounce back into the bulb. Impressive color! This would have been a top notch appearance if the head of foam was better. Up rose from this black brew a skim of mocha colored foam. It was around the 1/4 of an inch mark. When the beer realized that coffee doesn't have a head of foam, it disappeared in a blink of an eye. It only managed to leave behind a almost invisible string of tiny rings.

Saying this beer smells like coffee would be an understatement. It didn't smell like roasted coffee beans. It smelled like roasted coffee grounds. Behind the thick coffee ground wall was a touch of dark chocolate, a decent amount of roasted malt, a drop of molasses, and a subtle whiff of vanilla at the finish line. I certainly got the coffee portion of this coffee oatmeal Imperial Stout. I didn't get so much oatmeal in the aroma, but it was still a very good coffee based aroma. My nose had no problems with this beer.

Not only did it look like coffee, smell like coffee, but it also tasted like coffee. This beer sure loved the coffee grounds. Fresh coffee grounds. At least it didn't taste like coffee grounds that have been sitting in the coffee machine for a week. Stuck inside the coffee grounds was the roasted malt, dark chocolate, a dash of oats, a drop of molasses, and even a pinch of vanilla at the end. There's no denying this beer's love for the fresh coffee grounds.

This was a medium to full bodied coffee imperial stout with a nice level of carbonation and an aftertaste that was coffee ground based. That's not shocking considering the smell and taste. This coffee ground aftertaste also contained dark chocolate, roasted malt, and a little drop of molasses. This coffee based aftertaste didn't stick around. It left in a hurry like the head of foam.

Looked like coffee, smelled like coffee, tasted like coffee, but guess what? It's not a coffee! I've had coffee beers that tasted like coffee beans instead of this beer's love for the coffee grounds. There's nothing wrong with that if it does it well. The coffee grounds work well with this beer. Would I drink this again? I have and I will do it again.
