The Flatbread is a local chain centered around the first location in nearby Amesbury, but this was the first one I ever visited and is still among my favorites. It's a deceptively huge space just outside Market Square that begins with a narrow bar and opens into an enormous room in the back. It's lit rather brightly, but with the effect of a warm glow, which is different from most bars or restaurants. The dining area edges up against the open pizza ovens, which give the room a literal warmth. The bar is lively, and though somewhat cramped in the entrance, is comfortable enough for dinner. All in all, it's remarkable how cozy the place is for its size--perfect for enjoying delicious pizza and local beer.
The food is the same as at the other Flatbread locations--two pages of pizzas, daily specials, and a single salad, all of which are delicious, and all of which feature ingredients local to each location.
The story is the same for the beer list--all local, all varying from each location. I love how hyper-local this is, meaning that the beer list is different than twenty miles down the road in Amesbury. The list isn't long (8-12 taps, I'd say, with a slightly longer bottle list), but it's deep. Last time I was in, there were two Moat offerings, and at least one each from Smuttynose and Tuckerman. A lot of the taps rotate between seasonal and various local breweries, including Smuttynose, Tuckerman, Moat Mountain, Redhook, Widmer, Kona, Shipyard and some others. This is the sort of place where I wouldn't be surprised to find Prodigal in the future, though I have no idea.
The bar can be difficult to saddle up to and there's not a ton of standing room, so it doesn't work as well as a stand-alone bar as the Somerville location does, but it works beautifully for the timeless combination of pizza and beer. Even with a Flatbread near where I live now, I always look forward to stopping by the Portsmouth Flatbread when I'm in town.
Edit: EXPANDED TAP LINES:
As of a few weeks ago, Flatbread has double the number of tap lines, which I believe now stand at 16 or so. In addition to the Smuttynose, Moat, Tuckerman, Widmer, Shipyard, Peak and other locals that they've had for awhile, they've added a couple Woodstock, Redhook, Farnum Hill cider, Narragansett and Throwback. The expanded list made my latest visit even better. I hope to see Prodigal join them someday.

Nice, large eatery with no wait on a Saturday night. Full, but not overly loud. Interesting and unusual decorations on the wall, lots of wood furniture and tattooed wait staff. The glow of the pizza oven emanates throughout the room.
We enjoyed a great salad and the pizza was also quite good. Ingredients are fresh and local. Similarly, the beer list draws heavily from the New England region. There were seven taps working the day we were there. While the variety of styles is fairly limited, at least the taps were uniformly good craft beers. Also some bottles, although I didn't peruse this list very closely.
Between the inviting ambience, interesting furnishings, and outstanding menu, Flatbread doesn't require amazing beers to make it a worthwhile trip. The emphasis on regional craft brewers is just fine by me, although I wouldn't mind a little additional variety.

We have a Flatbread location in Portland Maine and their wood-fired, clay oven pizza is my favorite in the area. My girlfriend and I have always wanted to try the desert after our meal but never have room for it.
Well on August 3 we ate a meal in Portsmouth and then went to the Flatbread on Congress Street for desert. We ordered Babara's Homemade Brownie Sundae with vanilla ice cream and Barbara's Homemade Gingerbread with pumpkin ice cream. Both were absolutely delicious.
Now for the beer. I was hoping to find a stout to enjoy with my desert and I was very excited to see they had Moat Mountain, which I had been wanting to try for some time. It went perfect with my desert.
They have several New England area beers on tap and I recall seeing Brooklyn Lager and Shipyard Monkey Fist. This is a great place for excellent pizza and a nice little selection of New England craft beer.

Enter into a small vestibule, then on to the dining area. Large, high-ceilinged room. Attractive bar on the right, looks like it seats about twenty. Past the bar on the right are two wood-fired pizza ovens, which give the room a nice warmth. Minimal decor, but kind of funky. No TV at all, so people can actually have a conversation. Wooden booths and tables. On the Monday we were there, we even had a little live entertainment
Eight beers on tap: Smutty IPA, Peak Nut Brown, Peak Spring Session, Moat Czech Pilsner, Moat Porter, Tuckerman Headwall Alt, Widmer Hefe, and Seadog Bluberry. Our server said they try to do local beers. I didn't ask for the bottle list.
Flatbread is part of a chain. They offer pizzas and a single salad. The salad was excellent with a nice vinagrette dressing. We ordered the vegan pizza, which was OK. I though it was a little lacking in ingredients. Mushrooms and Kalamata olives, sparsely arrayed on tomato sauce. It tasted good.
Our server was excellent, attentive but not intrusive.
We had a good time. Will go back again.

The beer selection is pretty tame compared to the American Flatbread in Burlington, Vt., but for Portsmouth, N.H. this isn't all that bad- lots of local NH/VT crafts, Woodchuck, things of that nature. The food is really good- lots of fresh ingredients, unusual recipes, good flavor. Perfect for BAs with bambinos- lots of room to run around, the kitchen is basically in the same room as the dining hall, so you can see the wood oven in action, as well as tossing of the dough, lots of long tables, as well as booths.
