Notes:
Chart a new course with Daymark as your guide. We start with a classic, clean and crisp American pale ale brewed with spicy Columbus and Centennial hops. Then we accent the grain bill with rye grown on small local family farms right here in Maine and malted to our specifications at Valley Malts, an artisanal malt house. Finally we dry hop the finished beer for a bright floral aroma.

A: The beer is cloudy dark yellow in color and has some yeast particles visible near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a finger high dense white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a short head covering the surface and a coating of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of citrusy and floral hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste seems like a pale ale with notes of citrusy flavors and a light amount of bitterness but there some spicy notes of rye towards the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite drinkable and the use of rye adds a twist of spiciness to the finish.

The beer pours a pale orange color with yellow highlights. The beer forms a smooth, creamy white head of medium sized bubbles, and it is replenished by a maelstrom of bubbles racing up like an upside down snow storm to replenish the snowy head. The head sits at a healthy finger’s width above the beer, and it does not fade away… Ever. It leaves a lacing of fat clouds, made up of tightly knit dry bubbles. This beer is pretty to look at. On the nose, the beer smells of juicy pine with hints of grapefruit and a subtle rye spice that hints at grainy bread. The hop smell also gives off surprising hints of juicy citrus, moving from orange to slight pineapple, and then back to grapefruit. On the tongue, the beer tastes dry and bitter with some light acidity and only the faintest kiss of sugar. In flavor, the beer begins as light spicy rye with lovely grapefruit accents which eventually eat up the light rye flavors and move into a juicier flavor with hints of pine. The finish returns to big beautiful rye flavors with pine accents that work together beautifully and slightly suggesting bell pepper flesh on the tongue. The aftertaste is a tingly sense of rye malt and slight bitter hops. In the mouth, the beer feels medium in body with a phenomenal carbonation that provides a lovely fluffy scrub to the tongue and keeps this beer nicely dry and sippable. The mouth is left dry but clean, with some slight spittle forming from the hop acids. Oddly, this light spittle seems to help quell the bitters of this beer and balance it nicely. Overall, this is a lovely flagship beer, and a really nice lawnmower beer as well. They need to throw this thing into cans or a six pack so that people can sip it in canoes or on top of mountains. This is just a solid, American, hop-forward rye beer. It is a little harsh on the hops, overall, and some more rye character would not be a bad thing, but overall, I like this. Good beer.

Looks like ginger ale in a glass, average head & lacing. Nice hoppy aroma but not at all in the citrus vein, and with a slight peppery edge that makes its way into the flavor.
Certainly hoppy, sort of tangy and medium mouthfeel. The flavors are an unusual blend of pale ale hopiness with a peppery edge that is likely the malted rye, and seems on the unbalanced side as the flavors don't blend all that well.
Glad I shared this $7 bomber with a buddy because I didn't find the 11 oz in my glass all that inviting. When I don't look forward to the next sip with anticipation, I know it isn't a beer I'll spend my money on a second time.

Impressive, large and lumpy head with a long lasting time. Plenty of chunky lace on the glass. The liquid is cloudy like a wheat beer. The color is yellow-gold.
Classic pale malt aroma with a fresh floral hop nose. No sugar.
First impression is dry and bitter. The starting malt is muted. Relatively thin. The aftertaste lasts a long time--peppery bitterness.

Along with my Thai chili sausage @ the Thirsty Pig
The beer pours a clear, watery looking golden yellow with a thin white halo of head that offers mild lacing. The nose is a touch spicy/hoppy with a sweet backbone. However, the flavor brings forth a lot more rye and hops that play off eachother to create a spicy/bitter phenomenon. The mouthfeel is relatively sweet initially that transitions into a bold, spicy bitterness. There is a lingering sweet, hoppy aftertaste. It reminds me a lot of a less citrus-forward hopped rye of the tiger. The beer is worth trying once, but it's not worth another pint.

22oz. bottle: This one pours a clear golden color. There is a bit of a foamy off-white head on it. Decent nose. Piney hops are the most prevalent. Some floral notes also. The taste is also good. A bit bitter, with no real sweetness. Pine, as well as some spiciness. A medium malt body. I’d have another.

Poured from a 22oz bottle ito a duvel glass
A: a slightly hazy orange with hint if amber, two fingers of fluffy white head... Nice retention and lacing. Good looking brew.
S: smells nice light and crisp, some nice rye spice and hop aromas... Smells refreshing.
T: very nice balance between hops and rye, a touch of caramel but mainly a very nice grainy rye flavor with fruity and piney hops.
M: on the light side if medium with crisp carbonation. This beer is very clean and crisp and refreshing...dry on the finish...
O: this is a pretty good pale ale, especially if your a fan of rye beers.

Poured from a bottle into a glass.
Appearance: Clear golden yellow color, with about one finger of white head. Heavy lacing left on the glass.
Smell: Citrus, hops, and some pine notes.
Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth, medium to light bodied. Taste of mild citrus and hops, very mild IPA, not a "hoppy" as I expected.
Overall: Good beer, If you are just getting into IPAs, this is one to start out on. It gives a good overall IPA flavor without the huge punch of intense hops.

A-Pours a soft orange. Slight haze. Excellent head. Creamy white cap that retains excellently. It leaves clouds of lacing on the skyline of my glass.
S-Rye and hop. They mesh very well. Sometimes I think the rye can conflict with certain types of hops. Here it goes well. An American Pale with a well placed rye infusion. Spicy with citrus and florals. Plenty of malty sweetness too.
T-Lemony and grassy hops. Nice flowery hoppiness too. Doesn't shy away from showing its citrusy side as well. Rye is pretty spicy. Sweetened cereal malt. A bit earthy/dirty. Certainly has its complexities.
M-feels bigger than it is. Nice carbonation. Fairly sessionable. Would be a great 6 pack beer.
O/D-Far better than their IPA. A hoppy Pale with plenty of rye. Could stand to be a bit less expensive for a bomber, but overall, I am happy with the purchase.

22oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe. Reviewed from notes.
A: Pours a hazy golden-orange. A large, creamy, bone-white head sits confidently atop the beer. Retention is great. A thin coating of lacing paints the walls of the glass. This is a great looking beer.
S: Floral and spicy hops with lively notes of citrus underneath. Malt smells bready, grainy, and lightly honeyed. Yeast smells bready and ever so slightly chalky.
T: Hops on the attack. Floral and herbal/spicy with a mild grapefruit rind and pine resin bitterness. A good dose of rye hits on the mid-palate and compliments the hop spiciness nicely. Bread and soft grainy tastes ride on the coattails of the rye. A pleasant earthy yeast taste adds further nuance. Oily, spicy hops and spicy rye come back toward the end and linger on into the finish.
M: On the lighter side of medium bodied. Substantial and full in the mouth, smooth and well-rounded. Moderate carbonation.
O: This is a great American Pale Ale. The marriage of rye and a nice spicy hop profile is a harmonious one. The brewers weren't afraid to get a little creative here, but they didn't stray too far from the style. The result is a beer that colors outside the lines a bit, but still retains that classic APA feel. Tasty, nuanced, and creative. Great stuff.

Finally tried the Daymark last night. I think I've found a rye beer I like! Daymark is an exceptionally well made beer, with great balance. The earthy, bready rye comes through, but it is still a crisp, drinkable ale. All Rising Tide beers are made with a lot of care, and it is no surprise that Daymark is their flagship beer.

Had this beer at the Amesbury Beer Festival on Sep 22 2012.
Most of the beers were served from bottles into small 3oz plastic pixie cups.
Although I took notes on the 20+ different beers that I tried, it is difficult to remember all of the details associated with each beer. My apologies to readers of these notes. However, I did pay attention to my overall scores, and noted what I thought were unique positives and negatives w/ each beer.
Note that for me:
< 2.5 = probably would not finish the beer
3.0 = drinkable beer, but likely would not buy again or look for
>3.5 = will try to buy again in the future
As an APA, this was ok. There was a metal after taste that did not appeal to me. Reminded me of Sam Adams Noble Pils.

Bottle shared by Sammy, 650ml into a tulip.
Browned orange with a big white head. Great retention and lots of lacing. Nose has some lighter orangey/citrus notes, grainy breads, rye and some sweeter bready malt character. Taste has a drying grainy rye bread character, bitter citrus notes and light cracker and spicing. Medium mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Bitterness is overpowering to the point where it detracts from the beers. An OK pale, but bittering is too aggressive for my liking in the style.

Fresh bottle from Maine. The rye and the Centennial and Columbus combined make this a very bitter beer, even astringent. Would like to distinguish the rye spiciness if I could. The bottle says a pale, its not that. It is more malty with sediment on the bottle and grows on me as far as drinkability, but it is also a palate eraser and harsh.

A: Pours a hazy golden yellow with 2 fingers worth of head that retains well and leaves some nice lacing
S: Spicy hops stand out, along with the rye and some light lemon/citrus/floral hops
T: Starts out with the hops and slowly moves into the rye. The spiciness of the hops masks the rye in the beginning, but once the hops fade a bit, the rye shines more. Slightly bitter, but not too bad
M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Nice and crisp, smooth and refreshing
O: A great anytime beer, and nearly perfect for the warm weather. The hops and rye malt compliment each other extremely well

A nice treat, this American Pale Ale made from local ingredients, was brought back from Maine by a friend for tasting.
The packaging is beautiful with a label that I want to frame and put on my wall. The cap pops off with a fresh "snap" and into my hillbilly wine-glass it goes. The pour is a tricky one accompanied by too much foam and so it has to be poured in stages.
By scent, I anticipate a hoppy, spicey flavor from this cloudy, sun-colored brew.
Once the beer is safely out of the bottle and into my glass and I get to taste it, I am surprised that the aromas betray the taste which is fruity (apricot) and accompanied by a flowery hops. It's a nice flavor, if unexpected. As the beer proceeds, the flavors fade somewhat into a muted, watery version of the first sip. By the end of the beer however, some of the original flavors have returned with a greater complexity which allows this smooth, solidly carbonated beer to finish quite nicely with a very pleasant aftertaste.
I will look for this beer again, as well as others from Rising Tide Brewery.

Into a pint glass:
A: hazy light brown colored body with a frothy one finger white head that lasts a good two minutes. There are some bubbles on the sides of the glass separate of the head. There is very little lacing as the beer goes down.
S: based around the hops, where's the rye? hmmm... I do not notice anything else, no malts, ok, no big deal I guess
T: centered around the hops with a touch of malts every so slightly in the background. There is some coriander that comes in close to the end of the beer.
M: light to medium, quite creamy with a citrus/hops tang leaving a slight bite in the mouthfeel. Basically, for lack of better words, it is fun. I like it. I would say this is a pretty drinkable beer.
O: this is a good beer. I have been enthralled by the appearance. I would have this again. I will ask this: is this a Rye Beer or an American Pale Ale? Whatever, it doesn't matter to me.

Translucent straw color beer with a frothy long lived head that sculptured landscapes and foam.
Not particularly a strong nose.
Flavor is quite memorable- perhaps my favorite pale ale right along with this brewery's competitor Portland Beer's Spring Piper.
Flavor begins with strong notes of lemon citrus, hops bitterness, maybe some hints of coriander, lemon grass. Behind that start is an underpinning of malt and some yeast influence.
The flavor has an enduring property to it-- with a finish that never seems to materialize.
The mouthfeel is quite cordial thanks to this beer's long lasting citrus-hops flavor and long almost eternal finish. It keeps the beer vibrant and it's memory alive. The flavor is not so overpowering that it becomes tiring- in fact, I can imagine downing a few bomber bottles at one sitting without tiring of either the flavor or the "experience".
Overall-- a fine pale ale. I wish there was more of a nose to this beer. There is still more room for improvement, but it's a very enjoyable libation.
If you see this beer on the shelf-- grab it- you'll be pleased with it.

My reward for a two hour run yesterday.
Hazy dark straw color with an runaway head. Lacey diarrhea splatter mess.
Prickly grapefruit and lemon sugar candy aroma. Multi-grain cracker underneath.
The prickly hop citrus mixes with the rye spice very well. Crisp and refreshing is as cliche as a beer review gets - but it's true. Carbonation is...zippy? Body is a tad light. Other than the rye the malt is pretty much a dead starfish.
A lot of good pale ales coming out of Maine as of late. Daybreak is equally as good as Spring Peeper, MO and it's other hoppy pale ale neighbors.

Pours dirty bronze with 2 inches white foam. Quite puffy. Laces a lot. Pine and grass nose. Spicy. Lemony. Lighter malt taste, with a subtle hop. Some bitterness hangs out at the end. Quite mellow, but with full flavor. Light rye in the background that would almost be missed if not written up.

This poured out as a hazy yellow color with a huge white foamy head on top. I tried to pour this as slowly as possible but it didn't seem to matter. I gave the head some time to settle before pouring the rest of the bottle in the glass. The head had a good retention and lacing. The smell of the beer was very lemony, the rye gave off a nice little spice note in there as well. The flavor of the beer was pretty good also. The rye and citrus seemed to go pretty well together. The other flavors of grains balance the beer out a little. The mouthfeel was on the lighter side and had a nice crisp bite in the finish. Overall it's a pretty good brew if you enjoy rye. I'm not a huge fan of it but I felt that it worked well with this beer. I would say it's worth trying, I can't say that I'd buy it again though.

22oz bottle into a Red Hook glass. It poured a pale, golden yellow color with a fluffy white head filling the top two inches of the glass. Nice retention and lacing on the glass as I drank it.
The aroma mixes some bready, slightly spicy rye flavors with a zesty, lemony citrus. Some pale, sweeter, grainy malts come out in it as well.
The rye really plays a big role in the taste. I get a lot of bready, spicy notes out of the rye and some zesty citrus out of the hops. Some bitter citrus rind comes out in the finish as well.
The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of the style with carbonation being moderate. Overall it was a pretty tasty and easy drinking beer. The rye flavors really came out in it. Pretty solid beer overall.

Served in a pint glass.
The head on this is big and dense little bubbles. It is cream and hugs the glass perfect. The color is hazy straw and orange with a creamy quality.
The nose is spice hops with a citrus backing. The malt is sweet but the hops and eventually the rye take the back.
The taste matches the nose. Sweet and creamy at first but quickly is dry with a bitterness from the hops. very nice.
The feel on this is great.

22oz bomber purchased at Trader Joe's in Portland, ME. Pours a very hazy yellow-amber body with a good inch of persistent off-white head. Hops dominate the aroma, with orange, grapefruit, and pulp notes. Orange, pulp, lemon, with strong spice notes from the rye. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Rye beers are not my favorite style, and I didn't realize at first that that's what this beer is. That said, it's pretty good and among the best rye beers I've had.

Bomber poured into two tulip glasses.
A- Pours a hazy gold with a huge 3 finger head that dissipates very slow, leaving an impressive cap. Nice sheets of lacing are left behind. Great looking beer.
S- Candied pineapple, herbal and spicy hops, mango, peach, lemon zest and bready malt. Very nice.
T- More bitter with white grapefruit and lemon upfront followed by spicy malt with notes of rye and peppery spice. There is a hint of pineapple and peach at the finish.
M- Medium to high carbonation and light body. A little too high carbonation. Finishes dry and bitter.
O- This was a unique take on a rye beer mixed with a pale. A great aroma and appearance, but though the taste was a bit disappointing. Definitely worth trying though.
