On Tap

Hess Brewing Company
San Diego, Ca

Just about black throughouy with a ring of dark brown foam atop. Shiny body, and moderately thick. Nice ribbons and small bubbles of lace mess the glass.

Big aroma of roasted espresso beans, brewed coffee, and some dark chocolate. There's a touch of ash character as well.

The flavor follows similarly, with lots of coffee and bitter chococlate notes combining. Again, there's a touch of ash, but it's not particularly distracting.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A good coffee-forward porter.

On tap at Hess

A: Pours a deep mahogany color with a thin light brown head.

S: Tons and tons of coffee. Dark and rich with some espresso and anise on the edges.

T: Lots of dark coffee flavors abound here. Some dark chocolate and charred malt make a showing, but this is all about the coffee. By far the most coffee I've ever tasted in a beer. Really tasty stuff.

Thanks to NoSignsOfPain for sharing this one at the post Bruery Reserve Society party bottle share!

Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, coffee/espresso, and slight cocoa. Taste is of coffee/espresso beans, dark roasted malt, and some cocoa flavors. There is a medium roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good coffee porter that is quite easy to drink.

A dark brown beer with a fluffy tan head that sinks slowly. Nose is dominated by freshly brewed coffee, followed by a deep roasted malt note. The flavor of this porter is probably the most coffee forward of any beer I’ve had, including Peche Mortel and Founders’ offerings. Delicious, it’s almost more like having a strong cup of coffee than having a beer. Obviously if you’re not a coffee fan you’re not going to like this one but if you are, this is the beer for you – if you can find it. Booze is well hidden here, finish is fairly dry. The flavor of that excellent roasted coffee lingers a bit. Hop bitterness is low but present, body is medium-thin, carbonation is fairly low, making this a smooth and easy drinking beer. Highly recommended.

Pours a dark dark brown with a nice very light tan head. Smells coffee heavy with some roasty malts underneath. Tastes like a good cup of coffee. The malt backbone is dry and subtle. The beer is very simple and clearly all about the coffee which is good but a bit boring
