On tap at Hess Brewing in San Diego, CA.
Pours an opaque brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and herbal hops. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

Brewery says this is made with dark roast wheat malt. Hops are Simcoe and Crystal. Very dark mahogany color in the glass. Less fully carbonated than average; pours with little head. Very fragrant with the spicy and flowery hops. Not particularly bitter, certainly not in the usual IPA sense. I will have to disagree and call this an American Black Ale and it would make a good showing in that category.
At Local Habit in San Diego, where they say they occasionally have a Hess beer on tap, but the brewery is pretty low production for now. Definitely clean and promising beers.

On tap at Hess
A: Deep crimson tinged brown in the glass with a froth of brown sea foam rising an inch above the liquid.
S: An aromatic blend of pine, grapefruit, and orange, with near balancing roasted malt. Perfumy and floral with light chocolate notes.
T: Sweeter than I expected, with almost a sugary quality. A dry moderate bitterness accompanies notes of pine and orange pith. Malt is roasted with a dash of chocolate. The finish is bitter and lightly roasted with some evident astringency. Bitterness is pithy and dry.
M: Upper medium body with carbonation to match. Mouthfeel is smooth and sticky.
Overall: A solid effort. The flavor failed to match the implied promise of the aroma.

Black IPA, just to be clear. They listed it as a Cascadian Dark Ale, but this "American IPA" was the closest style to this on BA, as it is not an Ale.
Had this as part of taster flight, and I got about a 5 to 6 oz pour. Served on tap at the brewery.
The beer pours a deep murky brown, with a foamy 2 inches of head, that slowly faded, leaving nice lacing on the glass.
The aromas are of floral hops, lighly roasted malts, and a bit of very light coffee.
The flavors mirroed the nose. Floral hops up front, and mild roasted malts in the middle, with a creamy finish.
The mouth is also creamy with light to medium carbonation.
Overall, probably the best black IPA, I've had to date. It's it s growing style, but some were just a one and done for me, but this was very nice. A few of their beers have this creaminess to them and their beers are indicated as Organic, and it's pretty clear they are unfiltered as well, so they pack a lot of flavor.
