Hipster haven more like, place is a bit of a joke ... Glad the local clientel rocks this place, best entertainment for a while. I mean how big can your ear lob be streched. Yeah. Beer list is lacking. Most of the beer sold here is old and there beer lines are dirty. From that I have no desire to order the food. Live music ... whatever. Staff on hand barely knew what beers were actually on and the first round we were not even served what we ordered. Even the gansset can we ordered was old. Really ... Come on, this is not how we should end our night.
Hope they work on the beer side ... Not worth the trek out.

The Haven is a true Scottish restaurant, unlike any other place I have been in the Greater Boston area.
The atmosphere is great, you feel like you are in a pub in Glasgow.
The food is very unique. They stick with the Scottish theme all the way through. Want a soda? It's going to be right from Scotland, no Pepsi at the Haven.
They offer some great unique beers, straight from Scotland. If you are adventurous, then The Haven gives you plenty to experiment with.
Be sure to order the Scotch Deviled Eggs, well worth it.

A group of four of us ate at The Haven last Saturday and had a wonderful time. The owner, Jason, greeted us at the door and showed us to a table. He easily spent 10 minutes talking to us over the course of the night and he was at our table as soon as our beers got towards the bottom. He opened this place about a year ago after working in an Irish pub and forever getting asked, "What part of Ireland are you from?". He's from Scotland.
Beer: Limited draft selection but they had several Belhaven's on tap and a few things from Pretty Things and Berkshire Brewing Company (can't remember what else). They use many of their beers in their cooking. I thought the bottle list was modest, but there were some great selections. We had the Kelpie Seaweed Ale (surprisingly good and yes, you can taste the kelp) and an amazing beer, Dark Island, from Orkney Brewery. We also drank several hard alcohol infused oak-aged beers from Innis and Gunn and a Midnight Sun Dark Porter from the Williams Brothers Brewery. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and Jason was very knowledgeable about the beers.
Dinner: Surprisingly very good (Scottish food isn't given a ton of respect in most parts of the world)! We had a chicken sausage dish (outstanding, very hearty and flavorful), a black and white dish (lovely arrangement of white bay scallops and black blood sausage), and fish and chips (very tasty after a few drinks, perhaps a little on the oily side; I mean they are fish and chips, though. Great tartar sauce). We had minted mashed peas for an app which was also great. Tried to make that at home last night.
Dessert: Awesome! We had chocolate bread pudding with coconut curry ice-cream. Outstanding flavor combo! Who thought of that one? We also had a deep fried Mars bar (invented in Jason's hometown apparently). We were skeptical but it was delicious. The candy bar dissolves into a caramel chocolate loveliness underneath a blanket of fried batter.
Atmosphere: Rustic. Very neighborhood pub-esque. Deer antler chandeliers and rusted tin lights. Very comfortable. The bar area is fairly small, maybe a dozen seats and a few small tables around it. We sat in the dining room part of the restaurant. There was clearly several tables full of Scots that Saturday. The photo on their website makes the place look brighter and more cheerful than it really is.
Would I return: hell yes. And I'd bring friends.

I'll be brief, but I absolutely love this place. Echoing the comments of other reviewers, their beer list is modest in scale but incredibly earnest, intelligent and well chosen. A good mix of beers from Scotland, both traditional and not, and American Scottish style ales. Emphasis on low-ABV session beers, which is unusual and welcome. Pricing is very reasonable.
The food is very good across the board, everything executed with sincere care. Over the past few months I've had the steak and ale pie, the fish dinner, the mussels, a spectacular barley risotto, and the burger. The burger is one of my favorites in the city.
Where this place really gets me, though, is the comfortable neighborhood vibe and the incredible service. The owner is often tending bar and his genuine warmth, charm and enthusiasm are what take this place from very good to exceptional. A true neighborhood gem.

Decided to try this place out Sat night with joshman and our ladies. Walked in to a packed house. We were greeted by a nice host with a Scottish accent and fedora. He told us about the wait time, which we were expecting. Then he showed us to the bar and made us feel at home. Dimly lit room. Lots of cool Scottish newspaper clippings everywhere. Very cool antler chandeliers. The bar area is a bit tight, only a few seats really, but it was cozy. Grabbed a round of Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ales. Liked the beer selection a lot. You can tell the owner puts out what he wants. There were about 5-6 taps, all Scot in one way or the other. The bottle list was about 15 deep, and about 85% imported from Scotland. The host had told us 30 mins, and we were seated in 35 mins, so not bad. Our table waitress was great. Quick service, friendly, and checked in on us a lot. Oatcakes at the table are a nice touch. Started with the haggis & neeps, and the Scotch egg for table apps. Both great. I had the ale & meat pie for entree, and the ladies had burgers, and joshman had the fish. Meals were priced $10-18. We all loved the food. Had a bottle of Skull Splitter and Midnight Sun Porter with dinner; priced about $6-7 each. We ended the meal with a deep fried candy bar $5, which was an acquired taste. Everything here was spectacular - service, food, atmosphere, and unique beer selection. There is no doubt we'll be back here again soon.

The grandson of a true Scot, I felt something in my blood when this placed opened. Perhaps I'm just nostalgic for my visits to Scotland, but I really feel like I'm halfway there when visiting the Haven (especially on a dreary day at 4 or 5 pm).
I'll get to the beer first, because after all, this is Beer Advocate. A small selection of taps (about 5) rotates frequently, and always pairs well with the food offerings. The selection in bottle (about 10 or so) is mostly comprised of great Scottish ales. While it seems most BAs give places high marks for having a large selection, I am giving the Haven high marks for doing the opposite - their beers were all deliberately chosen. They either represent the finest Scotland has to offer (Skull Splitter and Midnight Sun come to mind) or they match perfectly with the dishes served. One exception is Narragansett...but it's Narragansett! And for that, I will not fault them.
The service has always been phenomenal, especially from owner Jason, who will not hesitate to engage you in conversation. The food is phenomenal, and I truly believe this to be one of the best gastropubs in the city. The homemade sausages are incredible, and the Scotch Eggs might as well be made from crack. And if you're feeling especially brave, try the Haggis! It's not nearly as frightening as you'd think. Just put it in your mouth and don't read into what actually goes into it.
For the love of God and all things Scottish, come here. Grab a Belhaven, some cheese on toast, and enjoy some good banter while Belle and Sebastian plays in the background. You'll probably see me seated at the bar.
