Lots of charred malts and some bitter hops make for a tasty porter.

Bottled Jun 22 (3 months ago): Viscous black with leggy taupe head; charcoal, burnt chocolate and slight orange rind on the nose; German chocolate cake, espresso grounds, fig, twig, slight molasses, and Curacao; creamy, dry, bitter.

Bottled Aug 20 (2 years ago): Steady tan froth that rims over beige-tinted black; hop sack, mint oil, wood, and clean char on the nose; carob, Baker’s chocolate, blackberries, earth and pine tar; smooth, bitter, round.

The classic export porter, an 1855 recipe from arguably the most technically proficient brewery in London. But, as would happen at the time, does the beer benefit from age.
This turns out to be a lesson in patience.
The fresh version is all sharp edges: almost impenetrable ashy roast on both the nose and palate with just hints of dark fruit + hop bitterness.
The aged version mellower all around with truffle notes shot through with verdant hop notes and a soft finish.
Kernel vary the hops from batch to batch (because Kernel), and there’s a pine character from Simcoe in the 2020 batch (yeah, even after 2 years) that’s absent in the Cascade-doppelganger Taiheke from 2022.
2022 just tastes… hollow. There’s a bass note, a fullness, to the flavour of the 2020 that’s missing in the younger beer. And yet some sweetness seems to have fermented away from the aged sample, making the young one, while more jagged up front, softer on the finish.

2020 is smoother, sweeter, less roasty, more nuanced, drier, and more sippable.

2022 is harsher, more bitter, roastier, less complex, creamier, and more drinkable.

Overall a tougher recipe to love than expected - a *lot* of roast, and a lot of hops, too - but one that indisputably benefits from time.

L- Pours black, with 3Cm (quick to form!) notably tan head that is holding well. It certainly looks like a stout/porter! ps 15mins later, head holds really well.
S- Distinct citrus smell, but a toasty edge too.
T- Citrus, contemporary hops... Mandarin orange, grapefruit, this is 'most strange' beer!
F- Hoppy-bitter, and sour/dry. This beer feels entirely the opposite of what it's look suggests.
O- This beer melds to IDs into one. It looks like a porter, and a fine one at that, but then it tastes/feels entirely like a NEIPA. In nigh on 1200 beers I've never encountered *anything* like this before! Well, I'm not into hipster beer, the contemporary hopping that to me over-dominates things. This is something right out of the left-field. Could be fun blind-folding a beer-geek friend, and getting him/her to blind-taste this and asking their thoughts. Bet they'd get a surprise being unmasked to see this is pitch black!
Bought from Real Ale Ltd., Formosa St., London W9. £3.35/500ml Bb; 19/05/21.

De 32gp. En copa Teku. Estudiando. Muy cremosa. Con el abv comedido pero cargada de cuerpo y sabor y un puntito lupulado que engancha muchisimo sin tapar el tostado

Bottle at The Miller, London, England

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dark tan head that consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with hints of roasted malts.
T: The taste has flavors of dark and roasted malts along with a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little dry on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The taste of this porter has nice roasty flavors.

really cool beer, they all were in here to be honest, but the dark stuff from these guys so far has been awesome in my experience. this is dark and silky, really pretty intense and deep on the dark grains, and super hopped up, pushing the black ipa category really, yet its so mellow and drinkable at the same time, an absolutely expertly crafted beer overall. the color is shiny black and the head is short and the color and texture of good espresso crema. it smells and tastes like coffee and dark chocolate and trace smoke from the grain, and pine and citrus pith from the hops, not overly aromatic, more in the flavor for the hops, and well bitter at the end with the alpha acid and the roasted barley combining. the texture is velvet, the body is full, and the beer is dry, its very nuanced, and it warms up well. i like the subtle presence of an old timey english yeast in here, it really unifies the elements and smoothes this out. a really flavorful porter that i would be happy to be able to drink year round!

330 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail. ABV is 5.8%. Hop is Target. Black colour, moderate tan head. Aroma of roast malts, coffee, exotic woodwork, dark chocolate. The flavour is mid between dry and sweet, with distinct roast malts, strong coffee and dark bitter chocolate, also distinct bittering hops.

Poured to a pokal glass.

A: The body is pitch black. The head is beige with a 5mm thickness.
S: The aroma is very interesting, as it has a profile of coffee (yet weak coffee), roasted malts and a small hint of burnt things and in the end, a splendid hoppy aroma for a Porter. Wasn't defenately expecting this.
T: The taste is mid way between a Euro Dark Lager and a over roasted malt Porter. It's somewhat empty but still looking for the coffee and chocolaty hints of the roasted malts. In the end, a very slight hoppy taste on Chinook.
M: Body is low as expected. Carbonation is perfect. Bitterness is higher than expected and actually better.
O: The aroma got me but the taste isn't that great. However, a hoppy Porter seems to be a nice style to dive in.
