American Pale Ale (APA) |  5.80% ABV

Availability: Year-round. on-tap (9), bottle (9), growler (7)

Notes:
This single hop ale showcases the Citra hop. Named for the largest T-rex fossil ever discovered, she roars with ferocious aromas of grapefruit, citrus, mango and evergreen. Delicate in body with a mild bite in the finish.

Poured from a bomber into a tasting glass.

A: Hazy, medium golden color with one finger of diminishing white foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Tropical fruit of moderate intensity really expands in the nose given time. Grapefruit can also be identified as separate but complimentary.

T: Begins barely off-dry, with refined pale malt and sticky tropical fruit hops aromatics that match the smell closely. Acidity is bright and lively early, preventing the hops flavors from turning oppressive. The finish is clean and moderately bitter for the style, and also a little soapy.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, balanced on the palate, with low carbonation.

D/O: This beer is representative of Toppling Goliath's talent for channeling aggressive dry-hopped qualities, while also looking like one of their pale ales (unfortunately). A bit edgier than Three Floyds Zombie Dust, Citra hops border on bold here which is saying a lot for the delicious but docile cultivar. It is also true to the form of the brewer in that is shows no yeast character, which seems to be one of the most unifying features across the Toppling Goliath portfolio.

Beer pours a rich gold with a little bit of haze and red highlights. Very good looking and inviting with a about 1.5 fingers of off-white head. Lacing seems to stick a little.

Citra punch to the face. I heard the nose was a little overrated with this beer, but I have to disagree. Reminds me of Zombie Dust for sure. Some spice and an overload of juicy citrus (tangerine, grapefruit, lemon peel). Fantastic.

The flavor is quite pleasant, but it is honestly bit of a let down after such a huge and promising smell. There isn't really the depth ZD has. Pseudo seems a little watered down in comparison. The aftertaste is especially disappointing, as it lacks a the unique aftereffect that many citras seem to impart. Still, the flavor matches the smell in character and overall the flavor is well above average.

Mouthfeel is pretty spot on, besides the watered-down nature of the beer--which I believe derives from the flavor. Medium carb. Creamy and extremely drinkable.

Overall this is a fantastic pale ale. Not the best, but still high on my favorite list. IMO, this is pretty apples and oranges when compared with ZD. The nose is the only thing that really reminds me of it. The malt bill is clearly different though, and not as refined. I also think the citra character, whill amazing, is a little muted.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into my Hill Farmstead glass. Was very excited to get this in the mail on Friday and glad to be able to crack it tonight.

A: Pours a light orange with a soapy-looking white head that sticks nicely to the sides of the glass. I assume I would have gotten a larger head if I had poured more aggressively, but I'm happy with this so far.

S: This beer definitely showcases the Citra hop well. Tons of grapefruit and other citrus, which is just how I like my hoppy beers. Obviously very similar to Zombie Dust, which is a compliment in and of itself. It also smells a bit lighter or maybe cleaner than a stronger IPA would be, which makes sense given the lower ABV.

T: I have to say that I picked up more of the hops on the nose than the palate, but I am by no means let down. Still a lot of the same citrus from the aroma. Reminds me of a lighter Sucks, which is definitely a good thing.

M: So easy to drink. I wish it was a bit warmer today because I think this would be the perfect summer beer. The hops are big and in charge, but not to the point that your palate will be destroyed. Plus, after having this one, you won't want to move on to another beer.

O: I was really pleased with Naughty Temple and PseudoSue only served to raise my expectations for Toppling Goliath. This is an amazing beer, no doubts about it. You see it, you buy it.

22oz bottle poured into a pint

A: Pours a pale straw color, with a sticky half inch white head. Very active carbonation.

S: Wonderful tropical aroma. Loads of mango, oranges, and pineapple up front. A very slight musty earthy aroma in the background to round it all together.

T: Very fruity and juicy. Sweet fruit purée with very little bitterness. Mango and even a hint of peach seem the most prominent. Very tropical.

M: Medium bodied, with a smooth creamy texture. Carbonation is much more subtle than the original appearance.

O: A really nice, tropical pale ale. Extremely fruity and sweet. Perfectly suited for a warm summer day/night. Really drinkable too. Could easily have several of these.

First run of Bombers. Thanks to Shagens for the ample supply...I'm gonna need it!

A - Light straw colored and wonderfully hazy. On first pour the head does not retain, but subsequent pours into my pint glass leave a tight thin head that leaves splotchy lacing.

S - Piney and herbaceous orange soda. This brew really showcases Citra in a way that I have never perceived it. The orange-y elements dominate instead of ultra resinous grapefruit.

T - Tastes just like it smells. It is absolutely a great session beer: the citric kick almost gives it a sour hit that makes me want to keep going...so refreshing! The malt character is very mild and I cannot ferret out what they are , the malt is defintely in the background. Citra hops are very dominate.

M - Light body, nice carbonation. Very drinkable and refreshing
