The 2008 edition, hand numbered #65.

A: Pours a rich and smooth inky black. Minimal oatmeal-colored head dissipates quickly. Looks great.

S: This thing hit my nose as soon as I opened and began pouring. Slightly sweet with some alcohol noticeable, but really it's dominated by complex malts. Hints of caramel and raisins.

T: Roasted, rich, with a pleasant alcohol bite, though it's more of a presence than a bite. Warm. No sugary sweetness, which came through in the nose, and not very balanced--pretty dry. But that's okay.

M: Pretty aggressive going down, with a sticky residue that lingers on the lips.

D: I'm always happy around this time of year when People's Pint releases the Imperial Stout because I think it's their boldest and most interesting offering. I could put more than one of these down, which is a dangerous but awesome thing. I'm going to try to make it to the brewpub soon to compare to the draught version.

In a tulip the beer was black in color with a medium-sized tan head. There was a bit of lace.

A nice roasted malt aroma, both coffee and chocolate. Some sweet fruit.

Dark chocolate taste with strong, espresso-like coffee. They worked well with each other. There was also a bit of raisin.

This was a rich, flavorful RIS. Very enjoyable.

2007 vintage from the cask last night at the restaraunt.

A - Deep dark with a noticeable tan line serving as the head. Very low carbonation.
S - Bakers chocolate, hint of rasberry and vanilla.
T - Sharp, and smooth not thick though. Cocoa lingers long, a hint, slight hint of booze well hidden.
M - Coating the entire palate with smooth goodness. A very nice finish with that hint of rasberry as desert.
O - To have a 2007 on cask was a special treat, and a great way to kick off 2013 as it was our first visit to the Pint of the year. The vintage may be at its nexxus. Overall a treasure to behold.
A finely crafted and lovingly aged gem by the People at the Peoples Pint.

Cheers

2009 Vintage, bottle # 386

A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a deeep dark brown almost black hue with a dark mocha head that never really formed anything other than a nice halo and small cloud. Swirling resulted in a nice quarter inch head that faded slowly. Quite nice.

S - Excellent dark chocolate aromas, faint "old" espresso , older mellow roasted malts. Everything is super mellowed and balanced. Definitely has a vintage Abyss-like aroma.

T - Hmm. So, definitely mellow with Starts initially sweet fading immediately to mellowed roasted malts and espresso with light chocolate. After that there are faded piney hops. Shocking enough there is still bitter pine on the finish along with a super, super faint smoke. Really unique. On one hand its mellow aged espresso and roast flavours, the other hand contains somehow light biter pine. Kinda cool its still there after 3 years.

M - So, this mouthfeel is on the thin side of "thick and chewy" with some low carbonation. Not syrupy at all.

O - Overall, I was incredibly pleased with this beer. Great flavours here really make this pop. Very well done and an excellent vintage for this RIS.

A- Dark full bodied sludge empties out of the bottle into my Pint Glass... Pitch black body the head follows completion of a rather aggressive pour in a thin dark tan ring... you can tell this will stain your fingers if you let it, nice!

S- Chocolate and Raisin... Overwhelming, the beer smells like raisin juice... a bit of prune, vanilla, and tar (getting excited!)

T- Raisin Juice... seriously, wow! Chocolate follows that immediate impression and the aromas are immediately evident in this bewitching and powerful Imperial Stout... Nice balanced sweetness loads of chocolatey nuance but incredibly bright at the same time, notes of raisin and prune adding this lift... some notes of fig, vanilla, and caramel with coffee just peaking thru on the finish.

M- Full bodied and sticky, this is a big, heavy stout!

O- Very good I'll buy this again if given the chance, Really Really nice English Style Imperial Stout... No rough edges... Delicious!

2008 12 oz. Bottle #514
Purchased a dusty relic from:
Liquor World Porter Sq. Cambridge MA. <-- good spot

Very little carbonation. Tiny head that doesn't really want to rouse. Poured incredibly viscous. Black and virtually opaque. Initially smells of booze, but after a sniff or two one gets caramel, roasted barley, and coffee notes. Definitely smells alcoholic, very pungent aromatics, even w/ low carbonation.

Taste is quite intense at first. Mouthfeel is thick and sweet. Flavors like molasses and roasted barley. Bitterness is smooth and suiting. English flavored yeast, sweet and fruity. Aftertaste of roasted barley and other dark malts. Also definite reminder your drinking alcohol throughout the sip. Acidic from dark malts and fermentation, but light carbonation left a soft mouthfeel. Vast array of different flavors in this. I liked it quite a bit.

Couldn't find much info on the beer, to my knowledge not listed anywhere on thepeoplespint.com.

Sample: 1 bottle 2009 (2.5 years aged)

A: Coffee-like, thick, very dark brown, decent internal carbonation, minimal head (light brown)

S: Espresso, honey, maple syrup, roasted nuts, hints of cocoa

T: Bitter and sweet at the same time, very well balanced flavor, strong espresso notes, very malty, light alcohol, heavy aftertaste

M: Very thick, yet smooth and drinkable, aftertaste is quite lingering but not unpleasurable

O: Very smooth and heavy stout, age seems to have lightened the alcohol and really mellowed it out

2010 batch. Bottle no. 18. Sampled on January 27, 2012. The pour is nearly black with a tocuh of brown when held to the light. Little to no head though despite a slightly aggressive pour. The aroma is of full, bold dark malts, something like dark cherry, a yeast strain, and bitter sweetness. The body is also full. An aggressive coffee and dark malt taste up front followed by a smooth but sweet creaminess and a near-dry hopped ending. A very high quality brew.

Vintage 2010, Bottle #31

A half inch of mocha foam falls quickly over this black ale. There remains a ring of said foam. No lace. Smells of leather, anise, molasses, alcohol and some hints of apple. I'm happy with this. I would suspect this to taste like a toned down aged Nightstalker.

Sweet with bitter bite. There's a hop presence to this still and reminds me of some of the hop profiles in some ABA's. I like it as it's a little spicy and a little meaty. Theres a certain nitrite flavor to this beer. Some dark malts, hint of blackstrap and some graham as well. Medium on heavy with low carb. i would argue a little more carb would go a long way to help open this beer up. Alcohol is not notable on the flavor.

I liked this beer. I think, based on reviews, I would enjoy this beer with another year, or at least an '09 as the reviews on the '09 are pretty stellar.

12oz bottle into Duvel tulip. 2009 vintage, bottle #46.

Appearance: Free pour yields a half inch tan head that dissipates slowly leaving a webbed wall of lacing. Pours a thick solid black with brown highlights, and has nice legs and spotty lacing.

Smell: Pastry and toffee, hint of roasted malt and faded piny hops. Slight oxidation that's almost undetectable (and therefore possibly placebo). Overall impression is a vibrant, vanilla chocolate toffee pastry aroma.

Taste: Toffee, mild roasted malt, long cookie aftertaste. Small but definitely present sherry-like oxidation note that does nothing but good for the flavor; if this brewery is consistent, this is definitely an age-able beer, as age has been kind to this bottle.

Lots going on without any of it being ostentatious. There's some piny and oily hops running through the middle, along with lots of toffee, some roasted malt, a hint of molasses, occasional vanilla. This is a really good imperial stout. As with the smell, this 4.0 is really pushing toward 4.5 territory.

Mouthfeel: A bit thin for the style. Medium bodied and a little watery, though usually gives a creamy impression. Low but not too low carbonation. Slightly dry finish. Approaches chewy but not annoyingly so.

Overall: Very impressed with this beer. I often personally evaluate beers by thinking: "had I brewed 5 gallons of this, would I be disappointed?" I'd be proud to share a beer like this with anyone. It's developed beautifully with age, and delivers several great (but often understated) flavors that should satisfy any fan of Russian Imperial Stouts.

22oz bottle purchased at Spirit Haus, Amherst, MA. 2010 vintage, bottle #114.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed no head at all, although a slight skim did eventually rise to the surface. Lacing is minimal through the rosiest of glasses, albeit exhibiting quite the legs, over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Aroma is anise and blackstrap, coupled with alcohol.

Flavor is dark sweetness to start, some syrupy fruitiness in the middle, and closes with a controlled acrid bitterness balanced with ample booze character. Mouthfeel is quite smooth, but would be even better with some carbonation, and drinkability is pretty good, especially for the style. Sad that I don't enjoy this one as much as I did when I reviewed it back then.

3/24/08 - 4.5/4/4.5/5/5
12oz bottle purchased at the brewpub. 2007 vintage, bottle #60.

Poured into a pint glass, formed a frothy 1/2" brown head, which holds nicely. Lacing is thick, and falls ever so slowly, over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Aroma is hearty dark malts and pervasive fruity alcohol. Flavor is thick darkness, coupled nicely with the alcohol warming close. Mouthfeel is velvety smooth, with drinkability that makes you want to drink another, even though you know you probably shouldn't *right now*. Very nice treat.
