The mother of Italian-style Pilseners, whispering stories of barley fields and hop gardens. A timeless classic, the reinvention of a traditional style, the Birrificio Italiano way. It may seem the most “normal” among our beers, but it is exactly the one to leave the most decisive and long-lasting of marks.

Produced by infusion with Caramunich- and Pilsner-type barley malts, brewed with a popular German bottom-fermenting yeast. German bittering and aromatic hops used both in warm and cold hopping (dry hopping). It is coarsely filtered to remove some of the yeast. Intense yellow-golden in color, it sports an abundant, fine, thick and persistently lacing white head. Initial citrus and grassy hop aroma with hints of fresh yeast are immediately followed by flavors of honey and cereal coming from the malts; crowned by floral hints of chamomile and dandelion.

On-tap at Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa in Rome.

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of crisp pilsner malts with good amounts of floral hops and lighter amounts of earthy hop aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Crisp yet smooth pilsner malt flavors kick things off and are joined shortly by good amounts of earthy and lightly citrus hop flavors. The hops carry through to a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is great. I finished my glass very quickly and could have a lot more of these.

Overall this is a stripped down version of the style that is flawless. Nothing special except a very well made beer. Well worth a shot.

On tap:
A very nice, soft-feeling and refreshing beer with a moderate bitterness. Nose has a slight floral note to it that may be influenced by the malts as well as the hop choice. Slight honey in the malt opening with a mix of pith and grass as the countering bitter notes.

Nice Pilsner. Crisp.

Pours very pale straw and clear. Crisp, clear flavor. High top end. Hoppy but not bitter.

Very good. Better than most Pilsners I’ve tried.

Beautiful golden color, slightly unfiltered body, with a creamy white head that provides a significant amount of lacing. Grassy hops are forward on the nose, with some citrus for good measure, with grainy malt notes as well.

The grassy hop flavors are forward and delicious, perfectly complemented by a bright citrus flavor and a cereal malt flavor for balance. This is absolutely delicious.

The mouthfeel is very clean and crisp, making for an exceptionally drinkable Italian pilsner that I could drink by the gallon.

Pours hazy kinda dull golden. Not a lot in the sense of aroma. Flavors is a bit muted compared to some of its stateside Italian Pils counterparts. This is a beer that has hit for me in the past, but just not the case this time.

Excellent combination of light, biscuity, honey malt and lemon zesty, grassy German hops. On tap it poured golden color with ample white lacing and foam. Crisp and clean, this was better than I was expecting.

11.2oz bottle purchased from the fridge as a single for $6.99 plus tax. No bottled on date code that I can see. My local store received this pretty recently, so I think that it is relatively fresh.

Look: It's a clear medium golden color, with lots of very small floaties suspended within so it has a hazy appearance. There was two fingers of a fluffy, somewhat rocky white head that dissipated to a thin layer and with a thicker ring around the rim of the glass and left behind lots of meringue-like lacing. There was quite a bit of sediment at the bottom of the bottle (it's unfiltered), and the appearance became very hazy after swirling and adding the remnants.

Smell: Very nice aromas. It has strong aromas of earthy, Noble hops along with more subtle fresh, floral characteristics. There is also a very doughy, crackery malt backbone on the nose along with some toasted grain cereal notes. After adding the sediment, the aroma reminds me of a Saison, as I am getting very yeasty, peppery notes.

Taste: Absolutely delicious. I think that it is one of the more flavorful and easy-to-drink beers in this ABV range that I have had in some time. It's super crisp and dry. Up front, it's a bit fruity (white grape, pear, melon) and I get that clean Pilsener malt flavor. The finish is quite bitter with nice notes of grapefruit peel and melon rind along with the classic earthy Noble hop character.

Feel: The mouthfeel is really nice. It's not thin and not heavy, it's just right. Medium minus to medium bodied. Perfectly carbonated.

Overall: This is an excellent Italian Pilsener, as it should be. After all it's the original Italian Pilsener, from which all other Italian Pilseners draw their inspiration.

11.2oz undated bottle poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 5.2% ABV. The beer pours opaque medium amber with sticky light khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves big patches of lacing. The aroma is mild with pale malt and orchard fruit, grass and flowers. The taste is semisweet pale malt with notes of honey, pear and grass before a moderately bitter, earthy finish. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with just above average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Cleanly lagered. Overall, very good.

poured from bottle into tulip, good 1+ finger cream colored head, good retention and lacing. Bright golden in the glass, slight chill haze. Cracker on the nose, along with floral, grassy notes and slight lemon zest on the nose. Taste follows the nose, clean grain in the front, slight sweetness floral, grassy hops, and a tad bit of citrus. Finish is a good crisp bitterness with a dry finish. Residual bitterness lingers in a good way. Very nice beer, but with so many locals doing this style now I have had a few that can hang with it for way less $$
