Bought in Milan's Eataly (a superstore), Ghisa was listed in the "1001" and arguably should not be. Intimidated by its size and contents, I carried it with me all the way into Germany. And the southern Germans on the train would not drink Ghisa with me claiming "Italians don't know anything about beer." I'll qualify that and say they don't know enough about smoking malt.

One of the loveliest, subtlest smoked dark beers I've had. The look and feel of it are in the Guinness range - the taste is all campfirey chocolatey s'mores.

Pitch black with a moderate tan head. Fair head retention.
Smoky woodfire aroma. Bacon. Chocolate malt. Some dark fruit.
Smoky with a slight bitter edge. Lovely subtle fruitiness. Good flavour all around.
Moderate body with moderately-low carbonation. Subtle and smooth.
A delightful beer. Nice complex flavour which works well and a pleasantly low alcohol content.

Violet-tinged black with steady, creamy tan head characteristic of a stout.
Roasty sweetness, smoked almonds and slight oily coffee beans on the nose - are there phenols in there, too?
Coffee candies, some fig, subtle smokiness and a vague bitterness without any defined hop flavor.
Creamy coffee finish and bitter coffee linger.
Silky, medium, soft.
"Rauchbier" is misleading; the label says Smoked Stout.
Great feel, as usual from an Italian - is that the high finishing gravity? Easy drinking, the smoke is restrained, and it's never too oily, roasty or bitter. Another fine food beer - try it with bresaola.

Color: black! Brown head, scarce and not so attracting.
The smell is absolutely smoked. Very smoked. Almost nothing else, but the smoked is pleasant.
Even the taste is smoked (strange, no?), misty, with points of toasted, artichoke, rhubarb.
Ash, burnt wood chicory, toasted and even some hop in the aftertaste.
A good and characterized beer.
