Roasted grain scents mingling with pine resin and faint citrus hop aromas rise above a dark, mahogany body and emanate through a very thick, foamy head. Mildly roasted coffee smells are also present. Taste comes across with a mouth zinging mixture of roasted and chocolate malt flavors, medium intense hop bitterness, coursing along a solid but relatively unobtrusive backbone of alcohol heat. Medium-light body, clean and smooth.

A very tasty black ale with a pleasantly intense hop smell and feel throughout. The malts come across lightly roasted and slightly charred yet complement the hops nicely. Good, tasty, and worth an experience...

love that this is bigger on the abv. pours an innocuous lazy dark brown and clear color with just a finger of off white suds. smells like hoppy boy ipa with a little more roast and a little more booze, a very quaffable hopped up black ale. good ale yeast flavor above the roasted barley and light pine sap hops. balanced, but the hops are still the dominant flavor, oily and fresh, a lot like the hoppy boy ipa really. lighter body and bigger abv makes a fun early spring brew texture. I like that the body isn't overwhelming, id have a few of these before they caught up with me. carbonation is lively, and like all twisted pine beers, im sure this was better on tap that it would be in a bottle, whether they bottle it or not. I enjoyed this a lot, and props to the new world of beers on Colorado boulevard for supporting some of hese local operations.

Bottle from Bottle Rev in Raleigh.

Dark brown pour with hints of red at the edges. Very little head, but a nice chocolate brown shade. No lace.

Notes of coffee, caramel, and grapefruit hops in the nose. Roast malt backs that up. Understated, but very nice.

Burnt chocolate, roast coffee balance well against a grapefruit hop hit. Light oils and maybe a bit of flowery hops come in as well. No sign of the abv.

Medium feel with only a slight slickness from hop oil.

A solid effort.

On tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a snifter. Off-white head, moderate retention on a black body. Oily, clear, sticky lacing and some with tiny bubbles. Aroma includes roasted malt, some malt sweetness, some coffee notes and maybe some vanilla wafer, not really getting any hop notes, are they masked/overwhelmed by the other flavors? Taste is very bitter indeed, the hops were obviously hidden by the other flavors. Some coffee and a touch of alcohol and chocolate in the flavor as well but some nice hop bitterness stands out. The flavors work well, not bad at all.

Just what I needed after drinking so much beer in the previous day, another beer! Though at least I received help drinking this bomber in the hotel room. On to the beer:

This is a very heady brew. The color is ink black, and the lacing given off by the head is outstanding. With an India Dark Ale, you kinda know what to expect, a little dark malt and a lot of hops. I'd same the aroma is on the mark; a touch of chocolate syrup, some roasted malt, and sharp piney hops.

At first sip, it's tough. A little roast, ash, and a truckload of very bitter hops were not fun going down at first. With time and as the beer warms, some of the bitterness wanes and the hops bring vague citrus notes to the room. It's medium bodied with a fine texture and a good dose of lingering bitterness in the aftertaste.

The Hoppy Knight is a satisfactory IDA. Nothing more and nothing less.

A: 1.5 finger head with nice retention and excellent lacing on a hazy deep mahagony brown body.

S: roasted malts, toffee, a touch of brown sugar and

T. Be ready on the first sip with this one because after that all you taste is the pine and bitterness. Roared malts and caramel followed by strong earthy and pine hop bitterness. Licorice notes.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: well to get the hops to stand out over the roasted malt this brewer went strong in the bitter hops. Hurts drinkability and Conplexity. Still a good one to try.

22 oz bomber pours a coca cola color with quickly dissapating head. Aroma is muted dark malt (somewhat like the modeling clay I used in grade school), not much in the way of spicy or citrusy hops. Taste is dominated by peppery hops, with dark roasted molasses malt. Mouthfeel is like trying to eat pepper, very harsh on the tongue which lingers well into the aftertaste. This style is one of my favorites - clearly there are better examples than this one.

Review from notes, enjoyed on 10/4/2010. The beer arrives a deep rich dark brown, nearly black, with thick solid brown edges in the light. A decent 1.5 finger tan head with some retention and lacing. The nose is a pleasant mix of roasted malt, sweet milt chocolate, and citrus hops. Perhaps a hint of pine as well. The flavor very much follows suit as the roasted malt and chocolate sweetness provide a nice base from which the medium bitter hop character rises, again with a citrus and piney earth tones. Fairly well balanced. A sweet hop light bitter flavor remains on the tongue. Finishes dry and clean. Medium bodied and well carbonated. Overall, this is my favorite beer from the brewery to date. Good.

Had this on tap at Twisted Pine's tap room.

All-around, it's not memorable but not bad either.

A - Very Dark brown with a small, quick-disappearing head but
good lacing of an inch or so.

S - Not much jumps out except maybe a little chocolate....

T - Decent flavor with average bitterness (surprising because their
description says the IBU = 80 or so). Nice lingering aftertaste.
Just not real complex.

M - Clean on the tongue and clean finish.

I would not order this again but it's not something I regret having.

(I believe the ABV was 7% but not positive so I have not
included it in the description)

Thanks to Dan for bringing this one over tonight. Pours a beautiful mahogany color, shot through with red, with a long lasting light brown head. Aromas of valencia orange, grapefruit and roasted malt. Medium bodied, hoppy (lots of citrus) and nicely balanced.
