Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #46 (Nov 2010):

Hazy pale-yellow color, decent lacing wrapped around the glass. Fresh herbs, nutty yeast, ripe pears and plums, and some fresh-cut grass is the collective of a very complex aroma. Crispness struggles to snap though the moderate body, which finally yields. Lemony, herbal and floral ... from bite to phenol to pleasant. Mild tartness is short but has enough muster to stand up to the malt. A little wet and malty in the semisweet finish. Pretty damn amazing, from a brewery not known for Belgian styles.

Appearance: A Belgianesque looker, with a massive foamy head perched above the hazy goldenrod colored liquid; plenty of lacing sticks to the side of the tulip

Smell: Bisquity malt, with a touch of banana, coriander and white pepper; some grassy hop and barnyard touches, too

Taste: Biscuity sweetness, up front, with banana and a hint of honey; in the middle, the spices emerge, bringing coriander and white pepper as well as some grassy bitterness; in the finish, however, the sweetness re-emerges (along with some tartness) to provide balance

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with crisp carbonation

Overall: Having had some mixed experiences with this brewery, I wasn't expecting anything quite this good; very pleased with this unusual Saison

on tap at the cambridge

Pours a hazed golden straw yellow color with a billowing, voluminous head, which continues to revive itself while drinking. Patchy lacing all over the glass.

Herbal and citrus notes in the nose with some peppery spice. Hints of funky yeast and cracker-like malts.

Snap of floral hops and lemon peel up front. Peppery and yeasty with soft funkiness. Hints of citrus and orange. Cracker and biscuit malts with a light sweetness. Finishes funky and dry on the tongue.

Lighter medium body, higher carbonation, bubbly and crisp on the tongue. A pretty refreshing saison for the season - I'd drink this again if it was on tap, but there's better options available.

Poured into a tumbler glass. Pours a clear, very light straw wit a big, stark white head. Head is slow to drop, leaving some chunky lacing.

Aromas of lactic sourness, peppery yeasty spice, and grainy malt.

Flavors of honeyed malt, peppery spice, mashed grain, mild bitterness. Finish is short, with honeyed malt and black pepper spice lingering.

Mouthfeel is light, dry, carbonic bite and yeasty bite. Good level of carbonation.

Overall a different take on a saison. Honeyed sweetness makes a nice touch.

Pours a honey color with a little bit of a carbonation at first. 5 minutes later it was dead flat. Swirling and giving it a shake does nothing. The carbonation is just plain gone.
The flavor profile is more complex than expected. A pretty funky nose kicks things off. Citric and a little bit over-ripe. This could be good or bad, but here it's good. Slightly sweet initially followed by a little bit of yeasty spice. Peppery and earthy. Hearty stuff!
A pretty solid and tasty beer that is really hurt by the dying carbonation. The nose and flavors fade a bit, too.
I'm interested in trying this on tap or maybe another bottle that doesn't go flat.
A good beer that's a bit flawed in this state. It really could be an excellent saison if the carbonation held up. It's currently great at first and fades fast.

First had: on tap at Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids & Solids, Longmont, CO

Poured a murky, bronzed yellow, bubbly, with a fluff of white head that retained well and left some patchy lace. Yeasty aroma, citrusy, with a good amount of spice and some grassiness. Drawing a fine line between a saison and a hefeweizen. Spicy yeast on the tongue, bready, fruity notes--banana, apricot, perhaps some blueberry--pepper and clove, grassy hops and lemon zest providing a snappy, dry finish. Medium bodied and complex. Very tasty and drinkable.

One of most interesting beers so far from the iTap House (Chesterfield). Poured from a 1pint, 6oz bottle into a Nonic.

Appearance- Extremely cloudy with 2-3 fingers of bubbly head. A bright yellow color as well.

Smell- There was a great amount of banana and yeast that came when scenting this ale.

Taste- Has a banana taste, very sweet, and sharp.

Mouthfeel- This has to be the strangest part of my experience with any beer around! Light bodied beer and stung the mouth/tongue while holding in for 10 seconds. Had to swallow after this amount of time. Almost had an affect like Pop Rocks with tongue feeling crazy sensations. Wild!

Drinkability- First beer ever from Twisted Pine and impressed but not happy with the price. Paid $13 for this ale and was gone within half an hour. They sure made a crazy beer but couldn't have another one after this. Maybe another day.

A - Poured out a cloudy, straw yellow color with a 3 finger, pillowy white head of foam. It left some patchy rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled yeasty and spicy with some nice clove notes. Slightly phenolic, too.

T - This has a good sharp spice/yeasty bite. Nice fruitiness with some grains and caramel. Mild clove flavor, too.

M - A light to medium bodied ale that is crisp and sharp.

D - This is another good Timberline Series beer from Twisted Pine. Better than the regular lineup.

a - Pours a murky pale golden color with one inch of white head and high carbonation evident.

s - Smells of yeast, spices, wheat, and citrus hops.

t - Tastes of bananas, wheat, spices, and yeast.

m - Light body and low carbonation.

d - A decent saison. Some nice spice and bananas in the taste. Would have again.

Pours a orange, peach hue with a nice white head that settles to a nice lacing on the top. The aroma is light lemon sweetness and some pepper spice. Not overpowering and very mild. The taste follows the aroma pretty well but is for sure stronger. Starts with some light sweetness then comes the earth like bitterness that is just about right for the style. The starw and whole grain bread taste finishes with a light pepper bite. I love this style and this one is well done. Very drinkable and really enjoyed the 22oz bomber. Good stuff from Twisted Pine.

22oz bottle $5.50 nice yellow color, hazy, cloudy. Smells super yeasty and spicy. If I smelled it blind I think I would have immediately said saison but it was no Dupont. The taste was a little citrusy, very yeasty, not a bad saison at all but still not a Dupont or Hennepin by any means (or my personal favorite Saison Brett). The carbonation is light and its super easy to knock the bomber back.

Thanks JMBH for a spot-on saison. Opaque fruity colour, modest head. Spicey saison, very drinkable and nicely malted.Some yeast more fruit including berry. Good balance, with significant taste.Only minor drawback was a bit much carbonation.Also a bit sweet bannana.

This was sent to me by Boatshoes. He says he lives right across from the brewery. Seems like thats a pretty good shtick.

A- A pretty darn pale yellow. The cloudy color is approaching witbier hues. Not much of a head, no lacing.

S- It smells pretty good. Spicy, lemony, and at times, tart. Lots of pepper, chalky yeasty stuff and apples.

T- Earthy and spicy with pepper and that chalky yeasty stuff. Bright fruits like apples and lemons bring up the rear.

M- Sharp, crisp carbonation with a dry finish. Just before the finish is a slick feeling that seems out of place.

$5.99 for a 22 ounce bomber.

Picked this one up on a whim the other day, along with a bottle of the new Tommyknocker saison. Aromas of black pepper, coriander and yeast. Nicely tart on the palate, with lemon and coriander. Decent, but not worth seeking out.

Poured into a Nonic.

A: Pale gold with minimal carbonation and a very light haze. A soapy white cap quickly recedes to a patchwork film. Leaves a small amount of lace.

S: Slightly musty and sour. Coriander and pepper spice dominates. It's backed up by a light sourdough aroma and a bit of straw.

T: Starts out with straw and dry bread malts. Bitterness contributes a pepper and coriander spiciness. A lemon tartness comes on late. Finishes with lingering coriander and pepper flavors. Alcohol adds a little heat.

M: The medium body is dry and has the right level of fizz.

D: I found this rather enjoyable. Perhaps a bit too strong for a warm summer evening, but a nice pickup overall.

App - decent-sized white head, dispersed fairly quickly. Pale straw color, decent clarity

Smell - Yeasty pepper aroma, somewhat generic Belgian

Taste - Flavors are subdued but has a Belgian character with a bit of pepper lingering into the finish. Flavor profile very clean.

MF - Light-med body, med-high carbonation. No astringency or warming. MF feels right for the style.

D'ability - Subtleness of the Belgian character and clean flavor makes this one very drinkable. A "lawnmower" Saison.
